No big deal, I don't need an amp right now, and we just made an offer on a house. But I would have snagged it for under 300.
Tell you what, I have sat down with a early 60's black face twin reverb, a early 70's MM HD130 with Clapton mod, a Fuchs OD supreme 50 (dumble clone), and my VHT special 6. They are all fender style circuits. You can get very similar tones out of all of them. Granted they are going to have different power sections, and the speakers used will effect the character of the tone. BUT if you cant make any of them sound good, I am not blaming the amp.
That $130 special 6 through two 412's gets pretty gnarly. Dirtier than your mother before your dad met her.

I actually sort of know the guy who runs Atlas, he used to live in Chicago before he moved to CO. We met because he bought several of my Emperor cabs off my when I sold them all.
They're akin to Emperor for sure (at least from the looks of it) I haven't played one, not sure what pricing would be like. Seems like most custom cab companies are not on the cheap side to begin with.
Wade quoted me the cheapest at $700 for two 1-15's, and we all know how that turned out. I'm glad monolith stopped returning my emails because I was real close to being
scammed.

My valve Jr sound pretty gnarly running a bunch of speakers too.
I need to get/build a series box. The VHT does 4/8/16 Ohms, but only has one input per. Need a safer way to chain two cabs that dont have parallel inputs.
wade quoted me 1400 for two fully loaded 612 cabs with neo speakers and whatever tolex options i wanted. i was well aware that was way too low and i was prepared to pay him more if he needed it. after too long i actually TRIED TO GIVE HIM MORE MONEY TO FINISH and he didnt take it (thank god).
hex cabs website is an eagle twin fan page from what i can tell lol. the company that had the crazy prices isnt atlas or hex, i cant remember, the company is up near where nick lives, but i thought the prices were outrageous.
EDIT: its mammoth cabs. an unloaded 215 is 800 bucks lol. too rich for me.
After the Wade dilemma, I just gave up on waiting Atlas. Maybe the prices are good, I don't know. When I found out he tours, it made more sense as to why I didn't hear back right away. I just wanted to avoid any situations because of Wade. Maybe not fair of me, oh well. The 1-12" I heard sounded good and looked good too. I haven't been able to get to Doomfest, but I've been trying to get Still Valley on it. The Atlas guy must be nice since he always supplies back line for that stuff.
The Eagletwin guys run Hex. I like that they are functioning art.

Uzala uses a couple 6x12 Hex cabs, they sounded pretty good when we played with them.
Darcy has has her's set up so 3x12's are sealed and run her guitar signal via a laney, and the other 3x12 ported which she runs the "bass" signal via the Boss OC-3 and a beta bass.
Sounds huge.

It's pretty difficult to make a decent cab affordably without a lot of volume. By which I mean volume of production. It's just the economy of scale. I'm pricing out materials for an oversized 212 guitar cab right now and before any labor it's about the same cost as an Avatar shipped, maybe a bit more. Short production runs aren't very cost effective.
I'm paying the price this morning but QOTSA were great last night. Now....moar coffee!
This looks extremely intriguing, especially for a first build. The Sunn 215 looks more advanced, being rear loaded with the middle port and strange shelves.
I wish I could build all the cabs, but I'll likely start simple
I'll do more research into drivers, and stem from there. Thanks for all the advice!
As far as amp builds go, I'd love to venture into that too... I have various transformers from hifi consoles lying around, but I need to get specs on them and see what I could feasibly build. I have such a large supply of capacitors that I would essentially just need a set of higher wattage resistors, some sockets, and I'd be golden!

If you do go the TL-606 route, I encourage you to transpose them to 1/2" ply, add some bracing, and adjust the port for what ever driver you decide to go with. Will pay off in the long run.
Truth. It helps to have old cabs to pull parts from. I must have spent around $180 just on components for the BFM I built. The Birch was only $20 a sheet. The neo (at that time) was only like $160ish.
I wanted to clone some cabs but it's not financially doable right now. Also, someone should buy my birth year bass. It's also not in the cards at the moment.
Yea its like custom amps. For example when I order parts for the average 100W amp it costs me almost $1200-1300 all together for the basic 100W with no aesthetic frills. So lets say I charge 1500 for the amp. I might be getting $200 in labor and then consider its like 40 hours of labor to build an amp from initial thoughts to design to construction. Thats like $5 dollars an hour labor, not even minimum wage. So when someone is building a cab in a single shot the price they are going to pay in just wood alone is easily going to hit 400-500 dollars for a regular ass 4x12 and that does not even consider if you go a fancier route and get hardwood trim and staining ect ect. All of that is adding hours and hours of extra labor into the design. Thats not even counting in the speaker cost which adds an easy $400 dollars for someone who is not ordering 1000 speakers in a shot. Most small companies are not doing that.
If I even wanted to make money on amp I would need to charge 2x the parts cost + labor to meet margin. In that case I would be charging an easy 3k for the average 100W. Now a lot of people would complain about that because they are cheap and do not understand how much labor goes into making a custom 1 off tube amp. Now the reason I do not charge that much is because I am not so concerned with making money on tube amps but do not be fooled into thinking that $1500 is a lot for a custom amp from a small company. Its barely breaking even. After gas associated with driving the amp around, small costs like solder ect.. that $200 I might charge in labor is basically nothing really.

Also, great band practice last night. I think we cranked out another awesome track. I'm really liking playing as a four piece... My guitarist set up his board with an A/B box and ran his looper, a phaser, and a couple others to the B side. So the A side is running into his Hiwatt/Avatar rig, and the B side is running into a loud as shag Fender Twin combo. It sounds awesome. I'm trying to convince him we can do just fine as a four piece, cause I really liked how things have been going with just the four of us. We've written some pretty rad tunes lately.
Going to have some solid tracks to pick from when we do our first record release with the label we're signing with. Oops, I let the cat out of the bag! We haven't officially signed anything or announced it yet so I don't want to say any more, but I'm really excited. Should be official soon
