Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

how do you talk about 415s and leave out the 408 (the COOLEST one haha)

and what hiwatt 415 are you referring to? pics would be awesome as ive never seen/heard of one.
shag, I knew I was forgetting one of the major configurations. Are the 408s sealed, then?

Here's the Hiwatt 4x15 cab. Actually, there are two in this picture. Under the 4x12 cabs.

you know, while I LOOOVE the tone of my Bergs, Im really coming around to appreciate the value of a good ported cab again.. I think I played crap designed ported cabs for years and thought they all sounded like dog poo... but ported cabs have some REAL advantages, like more volume!
Ported cabs can be awesome. The thing about them is that since there can be so much variety in how they're voiced, one can love a particular ported design while hating another.

One of my favorite cabs, possibly my favorite out of the kinds I've played through, is my Sunn 2000S 2x15 cab, which is ported.

Out of all the cabs I've played through, my least favorite cab, the Ampeg SVT-410HLF, is also ported, but voiced completely different.

...and play god? The hubris!

Made not born!

Don't put it in your kids room.

I had a life size inflatable football player in my room as kid 2-3 (I assume, my memory goes back to before I talked so I get confused as to time frame). In the day time he was ok, but at night he was a nightmare... I shanked him one night to end it. Still dont watch any football.

So 2 ohms as a companion for the Dunwich?
Or 2x4 ohms each chamber wired independent?

I'm still trying to figure out how it's going to be wired, but I'm going to shoot for it being 4 ohm overall. That way I can run it with another cab off the 2 ohm tap on the amp, if I want.

Unless you can get legends in 4 ohms or 16 ohms it's not possible. Four 8 ohm drivers in a box can be wired as 2 ohm (all parallel), 8 ohms(series parallel), or 32 ohms (all series).
Or you can split them into two groups at 4 ohms apiece or 16 ohms apiece.

You got that right. What happened with the guitar player and the practice space?

Have a gig tomorrow and saturday nights, 9-1 both nights. I have not been back to the space and dont have any gear there. I told them I will meet them at the venue, so they can handle pack up at the practice space on their own, which is what the non singing guitarist usually does. Sucks for the drummer to not have me there to help with the PA, but maybe the two of them can have some discussion time about it.

You think the drummer is going to let him have it with both barrels?

They come in 4 ohm, but the 8 ohm version is higher quality (cast vs stamped frame) and has more sensitivity (bigger magnet). I'm not sure if running it as an 8 ohm cab has any distinct advantages or disadvantages.

Dont know. But I am not smoothing over pain points anymore. Everyone is going to feel them, so everyone with have to address them. I am usually there to help with PA load up, set up, sound check, tear down, pack up, and unload at the space after a gig. Not going to happen this time. The prima donna singer/guitard can haul the subs up and down flights of stairs this time.

Your tube amp has an 8 Ohm tap? Shouldnt be an issue then. Only thing I can see is if you ever wanted to run it with a SS amp, you would be running at a higher impedance.

Ah the cb154. I've heard it's inferior and less suitable but never looked close enough as to why. Most people stop at 2x15. They don't have these problems.

Yeah, impedance isn't an issue with the tube head. If I ever want to run it off my Crest, I'll be way off maximum power. I've been considering selling my Pro-Lite 2.0 and getting a 3.0 for a while though.

More speakers, more problems...for everyone in the crowd who doesn't want to sh*t their pants.
