Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Speaking of that compilation that never came out. It's coming out, ha. I remixed the song and sent the guy a bunch of info. He also asked us if we went to submit a track for another compilation he's doing this summer. Last year we recorded some songs and picked out our 3 favorite, set them aside for any compilation requests and just recorded vocals for them as necessary when it came up. So now we're down to the last one, gotta find some time to record vocals next month.

We also got offered shows in Ventura/LA if we ever want. Mental Waste gets offered shows whenever we start interacting with people online, but it's not a real band as we don't actually have a drummer.

Whelp gentlemen I dont talked about it much but everything is not alright is VEGAland. Its sad to say it but its been looming for a quite some time...99.9% sure VEGA is over. Openning for UFOMAMMUT on the 13th and telling our guitard were done after that. Theres so many reasons I dont even know where to begin to explain it to anyone, and some things I dont even want to talk about. Truthfully weve been on borrowed time and paddling up poopie creek ever since that whole DUI debacle happened. Both me and the drummer are just done with all the BS. Im glad we recorded what will be our one and only album, and at this point glad we havent started spending money on our second yet. Im glad we were able to get physical evidance of our exsistance.

So yeah the next couple weeks are going to be quite interesting to see how all this goes down, but I do know no matter how good of music we make together, thats whats been making it real hard to end its all this time, its gotta be done and well be better off in the end.



On a lighter note, me and my drummer had two other guitarists over last night to jam. Was not a total trainwreck, one of them I really connected with and could totally see working just off first impresion, dude brought some serious gear, Freidman 100 watter with a Splawn purp 412 and a shoegaze sized pedal board and a way mojod old partscaster. Hes been playing out in bands longer than Ive been alive, so dude knew his shvt. The other guy would take more work. He brought some Mesa Mark 4 combo and an ultra classy tuxedo lookin SG. That combo was actually pretty loud, or at least very mix slicing! Kept up just fine with mine and the other dudes stuff. But this guy is more of a quiet solo basement player, I could tell being in a full band setting put him kinda out of his comfort zone. Dude could play pretty well too, so its gonna take some more jamming and to make a real opinion on him.

Yeah, my band isn't doing well either. My guitarist and I are probably gonna leave. Everyone wants studio quality recordings, but then insists that the metronome is wrong. Or that we don't want to play big festivals yet! (We haven't played ANYWHERE, let alone near a festival.) I think they're all scared of not knowing their stuff, but I don't care. I know MY stuff, as does the guitarist, and they've had their time. I'm sick of excuses and BS. "We" decided we're gonna get a show ASAP to kick everyone in the rear, but we'll see if that happens. I may be out sooner rather than later.

I like that dude as a musician, but I got stories from him being in bands here. They usually disolved because of something he did. Such is life. Cut your losses, as they say.

Bummer to hear it, but now I'm really going to have to make it to that UFOMAMMUT show if only to catch Vega one last time. Myself, Graham, Jeff and a few other of us Madison folks are trying to arrange a carpool, if that doesn't work out I'll drive my damn self.

I know what you're going through, it's going to be tough to call it quits but if you guys have been thinking about it for as long as you have then it sounds like you're making the right decision.

Please keep this on the DL for now, I know I posted it publicly on the web but were not talking to the guitard or announcing it as a band until after the show and we figure how all this will go down.


We have a special treat planned for the show too. Were doing something ive always wanted to do, playing our Earthless tribute jam song, Ouroboros, for the entire 30ish min set. Yes, we know UFOMMAMUT have a song also by that name. But I plan on recording the set with the zoom handheld Im getting for my birthday, if I can get a good recording, well release it as the perfect send off for VEGA.

That sucks, but I know you've had major drama in that band and at least you've got the album to show for it. Which is really good.

I've lurked in this thread since it start but don't post that much but that sucks dude. You guys sounded pretty good. I think you should wait until you find a guitarist that likes Peavey as much as you do :D. But in all seriousness, I would literally go with someone that you get along with over someone thats more talented. People can always become better players, people that are pricks aren't going to change. The hardest part is sometimes it's hard to not get overexcited about someone's ability you can easily overlook they are pricks too. You have to spend a LOT of time with people in bands if you don't get along well its not worth it. Period.

...sounds like band practice is cancelled. Recording project is cancelled. Guess I'm going to sit on the porch and drink beer.

Trying out a new guitar player on monday - he was playing guitar in a Zappa cover band so he should know his ass from a hole in the ground.

Today was kind of depressing. Had a busy music-related weekend planned and now it's all gone.

We were supposed to practice tomorrow, but it turned out our practice space is busy, so we just gonna sit at my place, drink beer and play guitars.
This is how it should have been from the start, I kinda feel we wasted a year with the former drummer. I mean we learned much playing wise, but now we know where we want to go musically and we have known each other for like 20 years, so yeah. It don't have to go smoothly or fast, I just enjoy doing cool stuff with buddies. :)

Damn I am so sorry to hear about the band troubles you guys. So really sorry.

It is just near-impossible to keep a band together for any duration. For so many reasons. I played in a dozen bands and I well remember primadonna attitudes, personality meltdowns, ego clashes, off kilter dynamics...hell, even "artistic differences."

And that's leaving aside the basic life chit that burns up bands and relationships...girlfriends who hate the music or are jealous of the band, people going off to college, people getting jobs or moving away...

More than once I was in bands where everyone and everything seemed to mesh...same basic goals and tastes, and the music would be good and fresh and we'd all get excited and make little vows like "This is really moving in a cool direction...we need to land some gigs and pool cash to record and release some vinyl...we gotta work to keep this going because this is seriously pretty effin' cool!"

And everyone would proclaim their dedication and yadda yadda.

Then within two weeks a guitarist would start banging the drummer's girlfriend causing a permanent rift or another guitarist would find Jesus and refuse to play this sinful devil music anymore, or someone would decide to leave for school three states away saying "What the hell dude, you can't expect me to stick around to be in some lame @ss band."

It's a straight drag. I miss playing live beyond my capacity to put it into words but I don't much miss all those interpersonal and musical obstacles that would crop up.
