Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Keep those ideas on simmer while celebrating the females in your life.

Heading over to record the rest of the bass tracks Saturday. I'm just going to take the PT 1 board and VT-RM rack. If we don't end up using the VT-RM I'm fine with that. I just want to keep it as an option. He has a SVT to reamp with.

Have been using the split signal from the board to the mixer this week. BDDI for OD Clean and Gamma Drive to AE HSD for dirt. But then the BDPG or Blower Box sound huge too. :)

Goal is to spend as little time tracking and most of the time on the reamp. So I'm pluking these songs as much as possible so I nail them in one take.

On the sales front I reposted the JBL E140 cab again and the first bite made me pull the add down. If you call asking what the size of the speaker is and power handling then I'm for sure going to get low balled in the end. Nope... Done It's staying here for now. I still want to build some Cabaret clones one day with these speakers.

I'm thinking about taking all my amps up for sale down. Nothing but lowball offers and people making offers, then never responding when I accept. I think I might just tough it out waiting for insurance to pay off. On the other hand I haven't used those amps in YEARS outside of recording other people, so I'm a bit conflicted.

I really want to give that Bassmaster of yours a good home. But my dough is all spoken for and I already have two Bassmasters (45W and 90W) and a Sovtek MIG50 which is kind of the same thing. Those are really great amps, and super versatile too. Great for bass at up to moderate volumes (depending how much you like power tube grit, and if you don't like power tube grit we can't be friends). Terrific clean pedal platform for guitar. Great Dad Rock AC/DC tone if you crank it (or use an attenuator). And if you boost it with an overdrive AND crank it? Thickest sweetest heaviest guitar tone around, good for thrashin, doomin, stonerin', anything heavy and thick. SOMEBODY BUY COREY'S AMP.

So, still sitting in the #!@&* hospital and entertainment options are limited. Have now seen 6 episodes of Ancient Aliens.

Did you know the three magi from the Jesus nativity account were not of this world, and the star of Bethlehem was an alien beacon, guiding them to the manger?

I swear...last episode concerned Tesla. One "expert" interviewed kept saying crap like: "You HAVE to ask yourself--was Nikola Tesla sent here by extraterrestrials to bring special new technology to humans?"

Ended up having practice after all, with one guitar player, pretty focused and productive. Two songs pretty much down, drums and basic idea for a third. Keeping it fairly simple to start, the goal is to write a set worth of material and start doing shows.

Put some mics on the drums, and put up a room mic, mixed it super quick on a powered mix, sent the tape out to my portable recorder's line in and recorded everthing. Turned out surprisingly decent, next week I'm bringing some mics for our cabs, and I'll take the DI from the 2 Pro, should sound awesome.

Going to use the recordings, chop them up with the computer and roughly arrange songs.

So far so good.

Lol sometimes the best part of documentaries or "interviews with crazy people" (depending on your view of the subject matter) is the title and background given under those interviewed.

A lot of those crypto experts, are like

"Dr." John Doe - Associates of crazy from DeVry, full-time basement dweller and part-time subway sandwich artist

Hey guys, I'm looking for a new tune head that can get the doom sound. However, it HAS to be new and finance-able through sweet water.

I like the SVT VR, The AD200B, the V4, the bassman 100T, and the fender super bassman. So it's currently a shoutout between those. I want a fat, overdriven tone. Think of the come my fanatics/dopethrone sound. My questions are:

1.How many watts is enough to get that tube overdrive, without stomps, and still compete with loud band members?

2. Can the 100T and Super Bassman cop that Old Sunn tube amp tone?

3. Can they cop an old orange tone?

4. Are the new AD200B's ANYTHING like the old ones, and is there any way to get it to sound the same without spending $200+ in a shop?

5. Can the Orange cop a bassman sound, and if not, how can I get it to sound the same?

Iirc the older EW stuff is dimarzio loaded p/big muff/svt. That being said is you want real "useable" actual tube distortion a lower wattage amp may be your trick. The v4 has awesome tube grit, the fenders have built in overdrive and the Orange is not my strong suit. If you mean are the new orange anything like the vintage ones I don't think they compare from what I have read. Also they never made a vintage orange with as much headroom as the 200. It really depends on how loud your band is and if 100 v4 could be enough. I think you can get some grit and lower volume with the mater volume ad200. my vote goes to v4/b should of never sold mine. And maybe my second vote goes toward the Orange only because if it acts similar to the terror bass it's tubby and gritty. I wouldn't get a svt unless your band is seriously loud and you want to use a pedal. I've never played the fenders so don't know how the dirt side of the amp sounds in person.

^^^ Yes, because theology is such a hard science.

I'm a nonbeliever. Might call me an apathetic agnostic. Though comparative religion and mysticism and such do interest me a good deal, or at least the history of them.

Bit if I have a PhD in, say, literature with a concentration in 19th century symbolist poetry, am I qualified to debate a physicist?

I decided to keep my Traynor, took all my ads down. Still going to sell my VTM 120 guitar amp, since I never use it and don't really need a gainy guitar amp.


Those Fender Bassman 100 amps seem pretty killer for dirty tube driven tones at moderate volumes. Depending on your taste, a Mesa 400 (single channel, non + version) is pretty killer for tube crunch at high volume. Not new, but there are tons of them out there used.
