Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

So my bosses are out of town the beginning of this week and I'm allowed to work from home finally and I've been doing some thinking this weekend as well.

A major part of my job is research based, and I do it well. So I'm doing research on average length of internship in this field, average pay of people in the field upon being hired and over time across the board. What I'm finding is pretty Interesting (in an awesome way). Also my bosses daughter just got offered a job apparently wherever she works and he mentioned the salary and even though it didn't match what is experienced in my field, I'd gladly take her salary figure.

This weekend I also found out a house down the street that is for sale and not listed. its a 60's fixer upper 3br/2ba and seated on 2.5 acres with a barn. I'd still be a 10 min walk from downtown and just as close to work.

So I'm thinking and a few other colleagues agree it's time I make my my case that I bring a lot to the team, and clearly intend to stay in the area. My hope will be to able to get employed and with that enough of a sign on to down pay on the house, enough salary to finance the home and fix up, and my healthcare and retirement benefits. Whoof that's a lot to ask, but needs to happen or just ship and look elsewhere.

Starting to see parts trickle in for my build.
Got my tuners in and the nut I ordered.
Tuners dry fit.

The nut is way wrong. Too short and wrong bottom profile.
I was in a hurry when I placed the order and got the wrong one. Waaa!

Need to decide if Bob the builder is gonna make my body or if I give my brother-in-law a shot.
Decisions decisions. At least they're good ones.

Soooo....there's a possibility our next step could be an unplanned move to Champaign Illinois. Looks likely to be where gummo was filmed. Any of you guys been there? Live close? What's the Midwest like? Does it really live up to being the footloose town mentality?

Haven't spent any time there, but driven through. Yeah it's not great, but Chicago isnt too far away and there's a ton of stuff to do there. I like the Midwest well enough, people are nice for the most part.

Wiring up a smallish pedalboard for all these doubling gigs I've been doing. Probably gonna add an Empress Para eq for the upright...want a couple other things pretty bad, but I want to limit this board to the size it is now. Including the amp View attachment 639215Got the GK MB800 in a trade the other day and it ain't half bad, at least until I can get my Reiner S1200 hybrid amp made

Nice! Got my MB200 on my pedalboard as a backup/headphone amp. They're great utility heads, and still sound pretty darn good. Mine can handle my metal band when it needs to!

Nah, soon as I get the time the Hondo goes on the chopping block. Wish I could have made it work, but it's not to be. That won't be it either, my rack and bass cases will be going too. Might even sell my Grind, if this new bass kicks enough ass.

I suppose I can elaborate on my new life drama, now that the family all knows.
My wife is, once again, with child.
So my rack and all bulky stuff will have to go. Got get down to a micro head and 2(3?) cabinets in the house and no more than 3 bases.

Also I'm supposed to go to part time at work and about that time I'll be getting the snip so these things won't (better not)happen again.

I'm not too familiar with Champaign but I grew up not too far away in Davenport, IA, and also resided in a similar midwestern Large University town (the University being large, not the town), Iowa City. It will have all the pluses and minuses of a big college town I imagine. There will be some music. Much of it will be simultaneously horrifically pretentious and amateurish. Yeah, Chicago is close enough for weekends of cool stuff. Climate can't be too much different than West Virginny. Expect no hills.

Hum is from there.

EDIT-
As far as the "Footloose" mentality I wouldn't be too worried. Genuine Anti-Booze, anti-fun Evangelicals are pretty rare in those parts; I would expect that in a large University town they would be outnumbered by lesbian gender studies professors and such.

I've been in STL my whole life. I dig the Midwest. The Bible Belt aspect is real, the people are friendly and Champaign is relatively close to both Chicago and St. Louis. Welcome my dude, and if you make it a little more southwest you got a crash spot at my place.

Midwest is all about hills interspersed with valleys. It has its own beauty. Central Illinois does suck a fat one geographically speaking though.

I have been there a few times, close enough to Chicago that it was easy to find yourself there. Don't sweat the mid west man.

Well your about equal distances from my home town of davenport, Chicago, Indianapolis and st Louis. Close to Peoria which has a good music scene and some decent shops. You couldn't be more centrally located to so many big cities. I had a friend who lived there and his wife taught and the university. Lots of jam bands but he didn't really get to see many bands.

Jesus I hate when that happens. Any way you can prove you were using the name first?

I've never had it be an issue with bands that had released anything, but very often when coming up with band names.

Gotta be even harder these days. That sucks and I hope it's either not a problem or you can work it out.

Still Valley IS a cool name.
