Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Got a new book for Father's Day. My music mentor wrote this. By music mentor, I mean the dude that recommended bands and music, hosted shows in his record store, started a fanzine for the local area, wrote reviews for MRR, and so much more. This dude is a local hero and is internationally known. Anyways, here's all his exploits. Highly recommended for punk rockers of all ages.

Hot outside today, tried pulling some weeds in the garden but gave up quickly.

Got two huge boxes full of NOS tubes for free off of CL. Nothing of interest for guitar amps but the vintage radio nerds will be interested. Gotta de mustify them, then test them at work, then sell as pairs on ebay. $10-15 per pair seems to be the going rate.

Jammed some more with the M85 and the new cab. Found a really killer LED mid-gain setting that might just have to be my new always on OD.

Cranked some Bongzilla and UFOMAMMUT records and cleaned house a bit. There's a block party starting up about 50 yards away so I'm going to check that out.

Later on i have practice recordings to listen to and roughly arrange. Not a bad sunday over all.

Visual inspection of the Ibanez WD7 wah-wah unit in question revealed evidence of substantial exposure to fermented barley malt liquid. However, when plugged in and fired up today, the unit performed as normal, so a big WHEW there. But I suppose I ought to be concerned about lasting effect of any residue that got into the pots or onto the PCB? Any experience here in de-beering a pedal? I know Squanch has tried and failed to de-dog-vomit pedals in the past...

I've lost awahwah to boozy indiscretions.
I tried scrubbing my PCB in distilled water and drying it out with duster.
Worked initially and later got unusably crackly.

Yes, there's a RadioShack 20 min. away. I kept all the old wires, heck, I haven't even removed anything yet. I'm taking pictures of the cavity, taking notes on what was connected where etc. right now since my new parts haven't arrived yet. Gonna de-solder the ground today and put it back in contact with the bridge. That's it till the other parts come in. I'll remember to get .22 awg from RadioShack, the braided variety. And some 18? Is that the thicker wire with a white wire inside? Some of my wires have wires inside them, so the main wire gets soldered on top of the pot, but then the white wire gets soldered to the connections on the pot.

Distilled water or some 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol, pour it on or q tip it in critical areas of sticky.

Should be several thin strands of copper wire sheathed in a black/white/red/etc. some color wrap. No multi wires.

Really as long as it makes a signal, I have wire in a few guitars that was little more than a coat hanger wrapped in electrical tape. Still shoot for the 18-24 awg. Do t forget to tin your wires!

That is like a thick protective plastic to protect and keep tidy the hot and ground wires running through them. No need for the 18 gauge, use 22AWG like Bryce said. I have been using 20AWG but I just was saying you could probably get by with even 18AWG but is thicker where people go thin on guitar/pedal wiring.

Ok, well, I got the ground de-soldered, and ran it through the hole to make contact with the bridge. But it doesn't stay there! As far as I can tell, it just contacts the OUTSIDE of the bridge. That is, I took out the tailpiece and bridge etc., threaded the ground through the hole, and didn't see it coming through the bottom of any of the holes where the bridge pieces go. But it definitely hits something. Maybe I need to try to go lower and get under it somehow? Tips? Tricks? Am I completely doing something wrong?

I'm assuming the same would apply to the switch? I noticed it has the same types of wires with ALL of the "big" wires soldered to one spot together, and the 3 white wires each soldered to different spots. So if I just get small wires, I don't have to worry about the big wires at all? They can be omitted?

Here is a pick of a ground wire with the bridge pulled off, just solder one end to a pot that has a ground coming to it, remove the bridge, then run it through the hole as it looks in this pic, then just pinch it in place when you screw the bridge back. All it has to be is squeezed between the body and the metal backing of the bridge, pinching it in place.
Yeah you just buy the single 22AWG wire you need, nothing special needed, one color for hot and one color for ground helps to keep track of everything.

I really thinned out my pedal herd lately but I got a hankering to up my phaser game and get something with an expression input to phase phase instead of wah wah and maybe tap tempo and wave/stage options. All the Space Rock I have been listening to has made me want to get a bit weirder in my playing style. I messed with the six string yesterday playing super slow tempo droning with lots of dissonance and effects and I kept waiting for the ol' lady or the little one to say what the eff are you doing but they seemed to prefer it to my usual noodling.

I love using an exp. pedal to control phasor speed. I have a crappy DigiTech multi FX unit and that's the only thing left on there that I have a use for.

+1 - I don't know why more modulation pedals don't have this option. EHX finally came out with a Rotovibe that has the EXP input, there's countless Roto clones that leave out that feature - WHICH WAS THE COOLEST THING ABOUT THE ROTOVIBE.
