Not sure why I have overlooked OM for so long. Twisted my ankle bad this morning coming down the stairs taking a big garbage can out to the car to take to the dump. So now I am couched with a leg up for the day I am hitting up the kava kava and some OM, Calgon take me away!

Guh, slept like sh*t last night. Got up, wrestled the new cab into the basement (No easy task hungover and tired), ate a giant salad, messed around with the M85 some more. Having a coffee break before shopping for groceries.

great fun Hex Volt show last night, a 6-band bill that leaned strongly punk that I put together at the neighborhood "intimate" no-stage / no-lights / BYOPA dive. Great success! Happy folks boozily gentle-moshing (I guess this is what you do when you're too old and mellow to be really aggro about it) each other all night. Lots of PBR spilled upon my fretboard. Got a little sticky by the last song. Again, I was able to hold my pick all night. A little technically sloppier than the last night, but definitely the most fun / high-energy set we've done. Only point of concern was the Ibanez Weeping Demon wah quit on my 2/3 through the set. As in, when I stepped on it, instead of going "wwwWWWAAAAAHH" it just cut the sound completely. I mean, the LED went on, but the sound went off. Need to check that out. I really like that wah, I never used any wah for years and years, but since I've been doing this Hex Volt thing it's become really critical to what I do, and as far as I can tell the weeping demon is the best there is.

Man I fudged up my ankle, it is swollen like mad and I am walking around dragging one leg like the Elephant Man. The upside is a new batch of Kava from a different vendor came in and this new stuff makes the first batch seem like wine coolers!

WELL AREN'T YOU AND FORTY-TWO OTHER PEOPLE JUST SO DAMN SPECIAL!

Nah, seriously...love those BTP albums...pieces...whatever ya wanna call em. One of my favorite instrumental bands ever.

I have an almost obsessive thing about instro rock and pop. I have huge collections (on humble CD-R mostly since The Great Drowning) of that stuff from the 50s on up.

To the point of compiling all the instro tracks from a given artist like Bo Diddley or Chuck Berry or James Brown or Black Flag to tracking down weird old instrumental b-sides from bands from the acid garage bubblegum days to the hippy days to new wave and 80s top 40. Even some early hip hop instros...in the day, lots of 7" records and also cassette and later CD singles had as b-sides instro versions of the "hit" or just more experimental throwaway instrumentals.

Of course all the bands who were primarily instro too...Ventures, Shadows, the great Dick Dale, Link Wray...and more modern bands like Pell Mell, The Dirty Three, Grails, Friends of Dean Martinez, Don Caballero...

If anyone is the least bit interested in anything along these lines, hit me. I'd be happy to burn copies. I don't have much of it in file form.

While I love a lot of all kinds of music WITH vocals, I am in a different headspace with instrumental music. It's a different sort of focus, but also easier to let play in the background.

Why I am rambling about this, I do not know. I am an old man relative to many of you.

I never appreciated or understood instrumental music until we decided to record an album with no vocals. We had written 10-12 songs all with the hope of eventually finding someone to sing over them. After about 9 months with no luck, we said let's record these and see what happens...

I was thinking today how much better OM would be with no vocals at all. When the music challenges your ears enough you don't need any lyrics.

I feel that way about the last Earth album. Great album, but the three vocal tracks are distracting to me, not in a good way.

I used to have this Zappa album Sleep Dirt on vinyl. Dug it a lot. When they reissued it on CD they added a bunch of horrible operatic vocals on it. Some chick warbling terribly over most of the tracks.

Apparently the vox were laid down when the album was recorded and they were part of Zappa's original plan, but it ruined that album.
