How do I describe last night's gig? I guess I'd say "of all the gigs I've played, that was one of them." Had a cable going in-and-out on me all set without an extra handy. That's what I get for cutting corners.

Ouch dude, that sucks. ProCo makes the best cheap cables out there. I use their bottom of the barrel line and I've never had one fail on me. Can't say the same for more expensive brands.

Since this was all live as one track (10 channels into mixer, mixer into program) we can't change the levels on anything else. We don't have 10 separate tracks to adjust. Just one live track. That's the irritating part. I wish we had separate channels, then it wouldn't be such a kick in the baby maker.

In that case, they're fine the way they are. If you have more songs I'd say release them. No sense in keeping them hidden when plenty of people, me, don't give a poopie about quality if the band is actually good.

Are you using anything post wise to smooth out the mix? You can EQ it and try a few filters with an editing program.

So the band met last night to listen to final masters of the demo/first album. Guitarist had some changes he wanted done, which were all mix-related. Curiously enough the notes for every song were "vocals too low, bass too loud".

Now, we had settled on the mix weeks ago, so to hear this sent myself and the dinner into a mild rage. We were civil during the meeting, but as soon as we drove off drummer called me to vent. He's righteously pissed, with good reason.

I brought up the show that we missed out on and dude claimed that he didn't see it until it was too late. I asked why he didn't tell us about it anyway, because it's really embarrassing to hear this **** second hand. He said he was waiting until we were all together to us know. That reeks of ******** because we all communicate via email and text on our phones.

So i don't know, drummer is going to reserve the bass cuts and drop the vocals back down to where they were. So the meeting ****ing sucked, but i had a really good talk with my drummer afterward. We're both pretty much done, there's a show or two in the works, we'll do those then we're going to concentrate on the new project.

Quiet vocals and loud bass is doom. Maybe tweak the guitar EQ to bring out a bit more "sizzle" or whatever to make some sort of change to placate him. Some of my favorite doom mixes are from Earhammer studios, and they almost always have really loud bass.

Loud vocals is a great way to completely ruin an otherwise good doom mix. Makes everything else sound quiet.

I'm finally listening. Kick is way loud. Guitar isn't enough. That's after first few seconds...

Drums are super loud and dry sounding, while the guitar sounds.... weird. Bass if anything sounds too bassy, not enough growl for my tastes. Also weirdly sounds like the guitar and bass are somehow behind the drum set or something, they're too centered.

Sounds like it was recorded from a mic in the middle of the drums. Or rather, inside the kick drum.

I'm sorry, I know that's probably not what you want to hear.

I keep four full length instrument cables in my pedal board case. I only actually need two. If everything goes according to plan, the other two just sit coiled on top of my amp all gig long.

If he could do that, it would sound quite good. Maybe put a little bit of reverb on the drums. I mean, if you're going to have massive sounding drums, you may as well go all the way.

I have an extra on-hand at most gigs. Just shat the bed last night. Pre-set beer intake did me no favors, either. At least the venue had $1 draws for the bands; next closest thing to free.

Agreed about the loud vocal thing, i like vocals to sit pretty far back in the mix, it makes the band seem louder, like you're seeing them live and the PA is struggling to keep up. ...and the circus leaves town is a really good example of this.

I think Ampegfuzz knows something, I saw one in my neck of the woods when I was less than flush and I didn't go for it. I'd shoot $300 maybe or something crazy... It's not "expensive" rare and he didn't list a price so if he gets offended it's his fault, just tell him you didn't know, and remind him trades are cool but how often would a dude playing an acoustic bass at that moment decide they need a damn ripper bass.

The phones used were less than ideal. You could barely hear anything besides live instruments. We put too much trust into my friend. He wants me to come over and get vocals lined up to tracks. Not sure it's worth it at this point.

It is very disappointing.

Joe I record damn near all of our rehearsals using a small 4 track recorder. Just coming off the board as you are doing. I just use two tracks for stereo mode. Honestly it took me damn near 4 months to get all the settings where they sound right in the mix.
When you're doing it into one track from the board, and you're not in an isolated environment, headphones are pretty useless.

It takes some trial and error but once it's set, you'll enjoy the benefits.

You need sound isolation headphones if you are in a room with a band trying to get a mix. Still won't be perfect but regular headphones aren't going to cut it.

This place is DEAD this weekend. Got rid of my last active bass for an OK price. Should be more then enough to cover the repairs on my preamp and still have plenty to play with.

The pocket on my shorts is too small and my wallet slips out. Took all my cash but $50 out and went to the bar spent it all with a bunch of South Americans, and wound up at a house party. Got a ride home and I guess told him I really needed to pee so he drove Into the police station parking lot as a joke, but I just opened the door a smidge and pissed from the seat without even unbuckling lol... So new skill, discrete car pissing didn't get it on me or the car!

Oh and the wallets missing, so of course it's Sunday. Monday I get to cancel two cards, get a new ID, and a new student ID (I lost mine 8 months ago and finally got one Friday).

As per usual no hangover, but dehydrated, and I have bruises and cuts from my lower thighs down a shaged up knee and half a toenail missing... I didn't black out so I'm really curious why I have the signs of a struggle.

Funky Sabbath is cool as long as it's still somewhat metal.
