Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

1) learn to code, and get do it enough to get good at it.
2) get practical skills and experience with something too immobile or too heavy to be sensibly shipped overseas- basically, learn a trade. Plumbing, electrician, carpentry, diesel mechanic, etc.
3) get an engineering degree or two.
I realize there's other ways to make a living, but I am not familiar enough with them to recommend them.

I learned a ton of trades (HVAC, Auto, cooking) but I would add linguist to that list. Learn at least a second language, better 2 or more. Gubmint contractor by day.

Marriage: I started a summer fling when I was 21. Next month, that fling will enter it's 18th year.

Kids: I might be a weirdo, but I never doubted that wanted to become a father. ... I don't know who I'd be without them.

I feel the same way. 10K years of genetic history ain't stopping on my watch. We even spat in evolutions eye and went IVF. My children are glorious abominations of love and SCIENCE!!!!

I wouldn't get too upset, people are stupid and love to make crazy assumptions about anyone who disagrees with them. I was weighing on a discussion about the minimum wage yesterday and someone told me to go back to "drinking your $11 latte's at your 'local' Starbucks. I'm running an actual small business, which if you did, you would know why you're wrong". I get sh*t like that all the time when I weigh in on business oriented political stuff. I've been working full time every day since I was 18 (I'm 36) and running a small business for 10 years. There are a lot of people that are comfortable just thinking that everyone who disagrees with them is one type of person that's some kind of made up villain of their fantasy (lazy college liberal, evil racist conservative, predatory homosexual, megalomaniacal religious zealot) and not just real people with different opinions. Several times I've had assume I was a millennial who has never had a job and all kinds of ridiculous assumptions that are craaazy far from reality. To be fair though, the world is filled mostly with people who never think about why they believe the things they do. They just adopt an attitude that gets put in front of them because it makes them feel good about themselves or makes the world make sense easily to them. Maybe I'm being cynical about that. I'm a classic overthinker though and while I'm opinionated, I'm always open to revision and try not to assume people who disagree with me know I'm right and are just choosing to be evil.

People suck. I get this too. Someone said I was being disingenuous and militant (not sure how I can be both) regarding a political topic of privatized prisons and laws that are made to keep petty offenders, in jail and prison longer, so the private companies that own the facilities make bank. And that I don't really hate the ultra elite, I'm just a parrot...

It's like, you know what dude... You don't f-ing know me or where I came from. Then the dude tried to friend me. I don't make friends with people who one minute make outrageous assumptions, then try to back peddle when I put them in their place. People suck. This is probay the safest corner of the internet, except all the damn GAS. You gear hoarding, lovable bastards.

Corey, this is one of the finest posts I've read on this thread. And the part the I bolded--Absolute Truth as far as I'm concerned. I would even amend/augment that by saying in general people don't know why they do the things they do also. And as for what you actually said that I bolded--this is precisely why religions exist and are often so successful. Also, religions are (for the most part) instant "velvet rope" societies where the Chosen Ones get to set their eyes at Paradise with the expectation that everyone who isn't in "The Club" is destined for eternal punishment. This actually makes many people feel good. Sorry, but to me it is a sickness.

Last night my wife wanted me to put on something mellow to crash out to. I dug around through my discs for a while and decided on this:



I rarely encounter people who are familiar with Loren "Mazzacane" Connors. He's covered a lot of territory and collaborated with all kinds of people but is probably best known for this verrrry kicked back and mellow improv solo guitar stuff, much of which he records onto an ancient cassette 4 track. Sometimes he uses stray conversation and extraneous noise as part of the "composition" such as the piece below which he recorded at his kitchen table one morning while his wife was talking in the background, unaware she was being taped:



Along with the also somewhat obscure Helios Creed, Connors is one of my favorite electric 6-string slingers. Not all his stuff is quite THIS mellow, but the man knows how to operate space.

PS-- Re: gear purging--when I put that bass & amp in layaway yesterday, I took in a crapload of DVDs along with a small guitar practice amp, the practice bass amp I had been using, a Dano trem pedal I never use and my last remaining guitar, the Lotus Strat copy.

Yeah, I'll want another guitar someday but I can pick up +/- $50 cheapos all day long. I was able to put more down on what I really want/need and clear out some stuff in the process.
