Well, we've covered it all today..
Death Metal Black: my current main bass' body was a Squier PJ in gloss black acquired on C-list. it had numerous light scratches and various disgusting layers of grime on it. I figured I'd sand it down a bit and then polish it back up to glossy. After going at it with some fine-grit sandpaper and 0000 steel wool, the grime and scratches were gone and I liked the "flattish" black look so much I left it that way. I don't use it for death metal, though.
College: I have bachelors and masters in Electrical Engineering. In-state tuition was cheap in the mid-90's, and the Dept of Defense paid for graduate school in engineering (turns out you can use technology to kill people!). I've been full-time employed in my field since finishing school almost 15 years ago, I can't complain. I would never recommend that anyone go in to debt just to go to college just for the sake of going to college. My advice to any young people who aspire to have health insurance, own a home, and retire before they die is to do one (two is better, all three would be super) of the following
1) learn to code, and get do it enough to get good at it.
2) get practical skills and experience with something too immobile or too heavy to be sensibly shipped overseas- basically, learn a trade. Plumbing, electrician, carpentry, diesel mechanic, etc.
3) get an engineering degree or two.
I realize there's other ways to make a living, but I am not familiar enough with them to recommend them.
Marriage: I started a summer fling when I was 21. Next month, that fling will enter it's 18th year.
Kids: I might be a weirdo, but I never doubted that wanted to become a father. I love both my parents, and they each endured way sh!ttier childhoods than me. And untold generations of mammals before them, suffering, struggling through filthy dark ages, famines, war, plague, poverty... and it's all gonna end with ME? I'm going to spooge off through this golden age of liberty, supermarkets, effective vaccines, and affordable guitars and just.. end? No thank you. That's fine enough for many, and that's cool, but I'm gonna take my crack at infinity. That thing about holding your baby for the first time? Remember the end of "The Grinch Who Stole Christmas" where his heart goes boing-boing-boing three sizes too big? Yeah. My boys are 3 and 6 now. They are each stubborn, willful, mammoth pains-in-the-ass little punks. And they hug and kiss me every morning and tell me they love me and beg me not to go to work. I don't know who I'd be without them.
Acid King: I spend the weekend in WA with in-laws. My wife's sister and her husband vacationed in San Francisco a couple weeks ago. They are pretty straight folks. He's a big Avenged Sevenfold fan, they're cool, just a regular suburban couple with lil' kids and no particular interest in Stoner Doom Metal. Anyway, while in SF, they strolled into a bar for some drinks. Caught part of Acid King's set while they were there. It was cool, they said.
