Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

How not-young are you? Maybe we've discussed this. I'm 46. Still feel like a kid mentally a lot of the time, but physically I probably have the biology of someone 20 years older. Trying to fix it, but may be too little, too late.

GLOOM AND DOOM FOR BREAKFAST, YO!
I'm 51, mentally around 14-16, but I got a lotta miles on the chassis.

I don't know if anyone here besides Corey and myself used to frequent the old stonerrock.com board, but if you did you should know that Owen Mays (potbelly) passed away yesterday. He was a kind person, stand up dude, kickass country singer and all around good guy. He was 32 years old.

That blew me away when I saw that, he was really young. I hadn't had any interactions with him online for years and years, because I stopped participating in the general discussion forums on stonerrock.com years before it shut down. The person who posted it on the new sr forum that I saw peppered it in with tons of sh*t talking in cryptic references to forum drama I don't know about, so I was confused about what was going on at first, whether he had quit the forum or actually died. So it was kind of a shock when I figured it out. A friend of my wife just had her husband pass away suddenly last week and he was young too, very scary and shocking.

He was local to this area, used to see him at shows all the time and my wife and i tried to make it as many of his country shows as possible. We were going to see him on saturday at one of the neighborhood fests in town.

Dong posted it on the obelisk forum, which is where i heard about it. I got really tired of the gen disc forum on SL lives. Seemed like most of the cool regulars turned in poopy bitter weirdos so i just stopped caring about it.

I had another friend pass a few months back- same deal, just went to sleep and never woke up. Scary stuff. Visit your friends, people- no telling how long they'll be around.

Well, that's sad to hear. I believe I registered at stonerrock a long ways back but don't recall spending much time there. I used to be on the Southern Lord forums a lot before they crapped it up.

And it goes fukcing loud...

My crash is a 14" Zildjian A custom, it's not a bad crash by any means, but not very heavy or dark. Good for a lot I wager, but not very doomy.

I know want a 16"-18" cheap used Wuhan China, but what's a good crash?

My concern is most dark trashy cymbals are thinner, and I'd be playing hard so I feel I might hurt them. The sturdy cymbals like my crash and A custom 22" ping ride aren't bad but def bright. I like the rude enough Imma keep it, but I feel a bigger darker crash is in order.

I have a friend who owns a beta bass that told me he'd let me know first if he was going to sell it. When this exchange took place a few weeks ago, I didn't think he'd be selling for a couple years. Turns out he wants to sell asap to fund a custom build. He's asking $400 for it, which I find to be somewhere in the middle of a square deal and sunn whoring(maybe I'm the whore though). It'll stretch me pretty thin if I get the amp and order a Dually. I'm thinking I should jump as red knob betas are getting rarer it seems. What do you guys think?

I plan on offering $350 and seeing what happens.
