Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Just have today and tomorrow at the day job. Then they pay me out my 5.5 weeks of banked paid vacation, and I go on extended break before the new job kicks in later this month. Oh, and as part of my employment agreement, I get three weeks of PTO at the new job that I have to use up before the end of the year. ;)

Not really sure what to do with myself.

Man you should do some kind of vacation to treat yourself.

I got pretty much nothing.
Megalith clone should be here tomorrow.
Drummer's on vacation leave, so way less practices in August.
Saw an awesome exhibition of Japanese art yesterday, all the cool woodblock print pictures I've always wanted to see, pottery and lots of old katanas, most of them visibly used and abused.

Oh, and another heatwave is coming on. Supposed to be around 100 on Saturday.

Hi everybody, busy weekend- nephew's 1st birthday party yesterday in lacrosse. Decided that i need to visit more- the kid is awesome, but my brother in law has gone off the deep end with paranoid protectiveness of the baby- bizarre, borderline abusive behavior toward my sister- which will not stand. This was my first glimpse into their home life post-kid and it was an eye opener. My sister isn't acting like herself so now I'm worried. They need a bunch of repairs done on the house that BIL doesn't know how to do so I'll use that as an excuse to be around more. Dude and i need to have a serious talk, and he may need a fist in the face. Because of all that i ended up staying later than i intended and missed the Neurosis show last night- bummer but family trumps atmospheric sludge. Back to work...

As a brother to two sisters, I understand the concern and I would never tolerate anyone mistreating them.

That being said, if you're concerned about your sister and her mental state and the state of her marriage, I humbly suggest offering some free babysitting and see how that goes before escalating to fisticuffs.

As a dad, I do recall the period sometime after our first kid's first birthday as being an absolute low point in the state of my marriage and my own mental health. We had gotten too exhausted to even be courteous to each other, much less be affectionate and romantic. It got better.

@kleinenenten

My peavey rockmaster heads pretty good. Most peavey tube or hybrid heads don't get too pricey. Mine gets very loud and can go pretty boring as its a guitar amp, just use the bright switch and stuff.
Yeah, I don't know. Can't imagine NOT using a GK for bass. I think I'm just rushing into stuff, but, you know, GAS! Gonna try to re-EQ sometime this week, and with the new band starting up, I want to make sure I either do or can't fit into the mix before I buy something big like a new amp. (So maybe I'll just buy small things like pedals?)

I hate being put on jobs at the factory that I'm really bad at. Like lining boxes with tissue paper. I have calluses on most of my finger tips. I can't feel a sheet of tissue paper.

However, deposited my paycheck. Strongly GASing for that pair of Faitals now. I know it's probably dumb to spend most of my money on speakers that I don't technically need but...

What kind of bass are you using? I love my GK 800rb and while it's no svt I can get "close". I just run everything at noon except the bass is at 3:00 and the mid shift is on. The volume master and boost all at noon too. I usually have the pad engaged also. GK are killer amps and I would change many things in your chain before the amp. Also your original problem was kind of confusing you want slight grit into tubey fuzz?

I don't even know what I want anymore!

I think the REAL problem was too much time on my hands. Though where this all started was in trying to find a pedal that can do both "tube" break up and fuzz, and alternate between with a footswitch. (Alternately, I can use my JohnK Gamma Bass OD for light, and just find the right fuzz sound, but the fuzz sound has been tough to nail. Musket?) My GK Rails Pedal has been filling this spot for both roles, but it's been wonky lately and is getting fixed up. It sounds great, but I feel like it's cutting low end. (It probably isn't, just that perception with all the boost functions kicking in.) I'm trying my darnedest NOT to buy anything for a while, since with the new band I may or may not need this sound. I haven't played with them yet, but all signs point to this being a more EQ conscious group and working with each other to find a sound, and not me working around everything else. We'll see.

In short, I probably just had too much time on my hands, and I'm not even sure I know what I want anymore. (But suggestions as to what I may want are ALWAYS welcome!)

So your boosting with the Gamma OD into the GK Rails and then another fuzz?
My primary use of the Gamma OD has been to wake up and initially color the weak ATK output. I'm a little disappointed about the pickup output on the 700 but I love the feel of this bass. These two going into the Hail Satan Deluxe then to the Sans Amp VTRM has been my primary chain for almost a year now. Lately I've been running full on Hail Satan mode and leave it. For a while I was only engaging the second stage for a couple of parts.
All depends on the room and how much I turn up the master on the VTRM.
It's been nice being able to keep up with the 2 guitars with half stacks.
Last show I was plenty loud. But not too loud.

I don't know of a single pedal will do grit and fuzz and be bass friendly. It would be some kind of white unicorn :). I say don't search or buy anything till you get a few jams in with the band. FWIW I thought the musket fuzz was terrible for bass I sold it the same week I got it in the mail. It's probably great on guitar but was another flavor of the week pedal here in TB. My old grit/fuzz combo was rat into muff (fuzzrocious RT into GS). I bet the rails will be cool once you get it back and wait to see if you need a different fuzz once it's repaired and re evaluate.

Yeah, that's probably reasonable, and is currently my plan. Maybe I can get the Blower Box on the board again, though it's almost got too MUCH treble and bite at times! We'll see. A few jams later and I may have to spend nothing, which would of course be nice.

Not quite. I was using my GK Rails Pedal for both "tube grit" and "full fuzz", but it's currently being fixed. In the mean time, I was trying to find some other way to get a similar sound. I decided that the Gamma would be good for the lower "tube grit" sound, and that I'd try it into other ODs, distortions, fuzzes, etc. to see if I could get the "full fuzz" sound. So far, no luck. I'm gonna try Gamma into Pharaoh soon, maybe that'll do it. I should hopefully have the Rails back at the end of the week/this weekend to A/B sounds.

As far as straight fuzz goes, I really like my Pharaoh, but I can't quite make it cut as much as the GK Rails. (At least not yet!) If I was just playing straight stoner/doom, this thing would nail it. I've been looking for more cutting fuzzes, but I'm weird and don't like extreme fuzz, but want it to cut. If I could get a stoner fuzz sound AND have it cut, I'd be in fuzz heaven. Like The Sword or Grand Magus, but with teeth. I'm gonna dream about this a little more now...

Take everything from your chain, and go straight to the amp (a tuner is allowed). Jam with other guys, adjust from there.
You kids get way too caught up in this OD/Distortion/fuzz/klang/graaahhh tone chase.

Try stacking the daddy-o and fabtone. I forget which order but one combination was huge like the fabtone, cut like the guvnor.

Blue beard with tone bypass and wizard fuzz come to mind on cutting fuzz pedals. Close third being the grey Stache
