Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

What is your budget?
Right now, my cash budget is $100. But if it's something big and I'm sufficiently certain it'll work for me, I'm wiling to part with various pedals, etc. Depending on if/when and how much that stuff sells for, my budget may be up to $500. Obviously, though, less money would be better. I'm actually trying NOT to spend/change a lot right now. I've got my GK Rails pedal in the mail for repairs, and hopefully that'll get me through for that song I mentioned earlier. Even then, I don't even have a full band right now to test my options, so I'm not wanting to spend tons of money, sound great solo, and then sound terrible in the mix. Really, the big culprit here is my free time, and my attempts to forget I'm losing that soon.

$500 still doesn't go very far in the amp department, depending what you want. Peavey Mace guitar head sounds pretty mean on guitar, never tried it on bass.

My amp definitely does biting, but it's a bit above what you said you wanted to spend. Maybe look for a Peavey Classic 400?

I have very little idea what hybrid amps like the GK Fusion sell for used, since I've never looked for them. You could get that Fender 1200 hybrid that's the same as the Sunn 1200S hybrid model that Ron was using for a while. Or you could go separate pre and power.

Exactly. And it's not that I'm unhappy at all with the current setup I have. I'm thinking I might just try and get an actual tube distortion pedal. Or re-EQ my whole rig or something. I don't know. I should probably save money, but GAS!

Those will both be plenty loud for an apartment rig. I'm just really thinking of downsizing some stuff. When I went through my unused pedals the other day, I just realized how many I had that I really don't have any use for or desire to use right now. And I've got two entire rigs, which would be fine if I needed them, but I host practice, so that's unnecessary. Was thinking of downsizing, keeping the 700RB as backup and maybe getting rid of my other amps and pedals. Just spitballing right now, though, so who knows. If I get the Fusion 500, I'll have to sell off all that stuff first, just to have the cash. I'm too thrifty to just buy first. (Though I DO have a bit of overtime money coming in soon...)

Oh yeah, 800w is to big for apartments. I meant size wise. The wattage is to act as a backup amp.

Just have today and tomorrow at the day job. Then they pay me out my 5.5 weeks of banked paid vacation, and I go on extended break before the new job kicks in later this month. Oh, and as part of my employment agreement, I get three weeks of PTO at the new job that I have to use up before the end of the year. ;)

Not really sure what to do with myself.

Porn-fest.

Took all last week off, wasn't really online much. Now I'm back, still not doing jack music wise :meh:

New 6x12 guitar cab should be coming in from Atlas this week, I hope. I was going to record some Mr. Grumpy demos yesterday, but decided to wait until I have the guitar cab in too.

I have been noodling a lot on my guitar for a couple of months, hanging out at The Gear Page forum, and generally thinking that I may be more of a guitar player at heart. then I picked up my bass last night an played it for about 30 seconds, and realized, yep, I'm a bass player.

I've been playing my guitar a lot more than my bass at home lately. Which isn't much anyway, I've barely played music at all in the last few months. I still prefer playing bass in a band or just jamming with other people though.

Hi everybody, busy weekend- nephew's 1st birthday party yesterday in lacrosse. Decided that i need to visit more- the kid is awesome, but my brother in law has gone off the deep end with paranoid protectiveness of the baby- bizarre, borderline abusive behavior toward my sister- which will not stand. This was my first glimpse into their home life post-kid and it was an eye opener. My sister isn't acting like herself so now I'm worried. They need a bunch of repairs done on the house that BIL doesn't know how to do so I'll use that as an excuse to be around more. Dude and i need to have a serious talk, and he may need a fist in the face. Because of all that i ended up staying later than i intended and missed the Neurosis show last night- bummer but family trumps atmospheric sludge. Back to work...

"I need to do what is right by my family, and if that means putting you in the ground and accepting the consequences, so be it."

Well, I managed to keep my job. For the past two months I have been worried. My boss told me in May she would give me an evaluation the last day of July and decide, based on a number of her own variables, whether or not to keep me.

Met with her and the assistant city manager last Friday and for a time I was worried I would be terminated. But it didn't happen.

It's just frustrating because I have my degree and certification, as well as substantial experience, and was told when I took this job I would have free reign over programs, etc. but then my boss has a habit of deciding way deep into the planning stages or even DURING an ongoing program that she doesn't like the way I've done something--because it's not the way SHE would have done it.

My evaluation was 98% very positive and I had tremendous, excellent feedback in large volumes from the kids programs I did all summer, yet the boss tries to find one or two nitpicky things that are really very minor and focus on those, blowing them up at the exclusion of all my other accomplishments and overall quality of my work, which I feel is very high.

Still have a job at least. Seems kinda cruel to make me worry about it for 8+ weeks, wondering if my family was going to end up in a shelter. I would never do that to an employee and I have NEVER had anything less than a stellar evaluation at any job I've ever held.

Okay, enough about all that.

BETTER NEWS: One more payment to get my amp and Squier P bass out of layaway. While I was in the shop this weekend to make a payment, I spied a Behringer (yeah, I know) "Ultrabass BX300" 30W practice amp for $40. I looked up reviews of the amp real quick and they were mostly positive, so I tested it out, talked them down a bit and brought it home. Actually sounds surprisingly good and has some decent features. Better than what I had been using as a practice amp for sure. It'll do. Not blowing me away, but functional and pretty good sound.

I got the practice amp mainly for my daughters because they both like to play bass and I don't really want them using the Fender Rumble when I get it.

The second part of that is, while at the shop, I spotted a used red Squier Bronco for $70 and I plan to snag that for my girls too. I don't mind them playing my bass or other equipment, but the Bronco is a short scale and far lighter than the Lotus/Hondo of mine they've been playing. This way they'll have a bass and amp they can share. Both of them are pretty good. My 15 year old is especially good at figuring out basslines to songs she digs and my older daughter is great at coming up with original stuff, but she can play along with anything too.

Younger daughter really wants a drum set.

Holding off on that until we (hopefully) get a chance to move and make better $$$.

Seriously sending my positive vibes into the cosmos for the Lake Havasu, AZ job, but others are coming down the pike too.

Once I talked it over with my wife and we decided moving out of Oklahoma was on the menu, I re-quadrupled my efforts of landing a better job in another state...mainly looking AZ, Oregon, Washington and Colorado.

Hell, almost forgot--more cool news on the Mudd front:

My best friend in Texas wants to start a music project. He's blowing drums and guitar onto a 4-track cassette, then sending me the cassette to add bass and other stuff to.

I received the first unfinished tape yesterday and he really did a good job. It's pretty lo-fi garage rock instro stuff so far. We might add some occasional sound effects or clips from old horror/sci fi flicks, but keep that to a minimum. We might do some vox too if we wind up doing any covers from the fuzz/garage era.

I'm pretty excited about this. I gotta get a metronome so I can send him tracks of me playing bass for him to lay drums and guitar on top of.

If all goes well, we're gonna put out a single or ep. Both of us have "Being on a vinyl release of some kind" on our bucket list.

Not earth-shaking music, but it's pretty damn cool. Would love it if he and I were close enough to just jam and record, but this'll do for now. Fun stuff. After the tracks get mastered and I can convert them to mp3s I'll post a tune or two here.

We both dig all kinds of music, but don't really have the $$$ or gear to make nice, clean or doomy recordings. We both also have a punk rock background and a big love for 60s trash rock, so this'll mainly be short 2-3 minute bursts.

While i won't immediately escalate to death threats, that's pretty much where I'm coming from.

Damn, that's rough. Your sister changing like you describe could really be a bad sign. Not to worry you---I know you know this. It's good you are concerned and that she has you in her corner.

Yeah, it sucks to say it, but some dudes just need their clocks cleaned. In some cases, it's the best thing you could do for 'em.
