Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

4 pro sold quickly and unexpectedly today. Puts me in the market for a preamp and power amp. Any suggestions for a pre? I am thinking tech 21 RPM. I figure with the mid control and dialing back the sim all the way it should be a halfway decent ampegish sound with an assload of power behind it. Probably won't use a lot of the sansamp dirt and just run it clean.

I like the BBE BMAX, fender eq so mid is cut only, but i never had trouble with it sounding scooped. Or look for an old Peavey TB Raxx, can be had cheap and it's got da toobz.

Ok, I'm not sure I understand this thread... Why are there thousands of messages? Is this for stoner/doom metal bassists to talk to each other, or is it for talking about stoner/doom bassists? Can I still talk here even if I'm not a stoner/doom bassist, but rather a more traditional metal bassist?

You've spoken therefore you are in.

What's up? What you like to play?

That was pretty simple.

I've only been playing bass for about a year, so some of the more progressive music is out of my current capabilities. I like playing stuff like Metallica, Rush, and Iron Maiden, but I plan to play Dream Theater and some death metal stuff when I get there.

Wat is a stoner doom?

Inside joke.

Because we are awesome.

Yes.

Some of my favorite bands within these genres are Weedeater, Yob, Spirit Caravan, Goya, Brainoil, High On Fire, Clutch, Melvins, Acid King, Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, Buzzoven, Elder, Kyuss, Sea of Bones, Goatsnake.

As for this group...well, some of us are in bands of this sound, some between bands, some just fans. It's a mix of music, gear and general discussion. Feels like it should be its own subforum sometimes.

so, what are some of the best stoner/doom bands I should look into to see if I like the genres?
No one agrees. Except on Bongripper.

Personally, I listen to a lot of Yob, Neurosis, SubRosa, Sleep, Laudanum, Bog Oak, Abstracter, Cult of Luna, Pallbearer, Sea of Bones, Graves at Sea, Triptykon, and, of course, Black Sabbath.

In terms of non-stoner/doom, I've been super into Primoridal and Melechesh in the last few years.

Black Sabbath

1. Lol. But true.

2. IMO only the unholy trinity of their first three albums but that's also because I despise Dio.

Also, out of STL, Fister is ****ing incredible, Black Fast rips and The Lion's Daughter is also pretty righteous.

Really all of you guys should check those bands out. It'll be worth your time. Fister is getting ready for a western tour as well.

RE: preamps

I had a BBE compressor that I never really grew fond of. Kind of scares me away from BBE products, but that Bmax-T looks interesting. I may have opened a whole new gas door for myself. I am still looking primarily at Tech 21 though. If I can get relatively flat and clean without the sansamp signature tone then I think it would work great. Then again maybe I'll like the sansamp tone when it isn't fed into another ampeg preamp which is my only experience with it.

Alright I'll check those out tonight.

On to gear I guess. What do you all think of the Darkglass b3k/b7k pedals/preamps?
Personally, I love my B3K! Hasn't left the board in the 2 (maybe 3?) years I've had it. It was a bit pricey for me, even used, but worth every cent. It sounds good for doom, but I usually prefer it for my faster, thrashier stuff. But it'll work for just about anything heavy. If it's really slow heavy, though, I typically prefer heavier OD or fuzz, or both.

So, what gear do you use? We talk a lot about gear, and are pretty non-judgmental here. We have guys that play simple combos all the way to dudes who rock walls of amps. If it works for you, who cares, right? I rock a GK 700RB-II with a GK 410 Neo. Plenty loud, versatile, and relatively light.
