Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

4 pro sold quickly and unexpectedly today. Puts me in the market for a preamp and power amp. Any suggestions for a pre? I am thinking tech 21 RPM. I figure with the mid control and dialing back the sim all the way it should be a halfway decent ampegish sound with an assload of power behind it. Probably won't use a lot of the sansamp dirt and just run it clean.
Tech21 RBI should get a very good Ampeg tone for you.

Hey a stoner/doom fan from Singapore cool! I used to spend summers there and in Malaysia. My uncle had a condo off the woodlands Red Line train station.

1. Lol. But true.

2. IMO only the unholy trinity of their first three albums but that's also because I despise Dio.

Also, out of STL, Fister is ****ing incredible, Black Fast rips and The Lion's Daughter is also pretty righteous.

Really all of you guys should check those bands out. It'll be worth your time. Fister is getting ready for a western tour as well.

RE: preamps

I had a BBE compressor that I never really grew fond of. Kind of scares me away from BBE products, but that Bmax-T looks interesting. I may have opened a whole new gas door for myself. I am still looking primarily at Tech 21 though. If I can get relatively flat and clean without the sansamp signature tone then I think it would work great. Then again maybe I'll like the sansamp tone when it isn't fed into another ampeg preamp which is my only experience with it.

Is fister or someone in fister sponsored by GUitar Fetish, they used to say something on there site about fister.

Ever have one of those nights where you dream epically long, stressful, somewhat disturbing dreams that seem to go on for years, then when you wake up you're exhausted, feel like you've aged 10 years and it messes with your head for hours afterward?

I had that last night. Exhausted and weird today. Weird.

No more peanut butter, jelly & pastrami sandwiches before bed.

A buddy of mine turned me on to the BBE Sonic Stomp/Sonic Maximizer and now I can't imagine a pedalboard without it.

Trace Elliot v type if you can find one cheap. Still not a fan of the baked in sansanp tone. I bought a rack version since it was a crazy pawn shop deal and had the mid control. V type is based on the alembic preamp wich both sound really good.

Band(s) update: went from dead in the water to possibly 3 shows in one month with 3 different bands.

haha the worst thing about being a stoner doom fan in singapore is the fact that we got no weed here!!

Ampegfuzz, isn't the baked in SansAmp tone supposed to be "Ampeg"? I use that setting, on Ye Olde SABDDI, and I feel like it is Ampeg-y. I do have tin ears, though, so YMMV.

It is supposed to be ampeggy but it's far from the real thing. Some people just can't stand the baked in Sansamp tone. I'm one of them. It can sound great when other people use it, but with my basses and amps it's never worked out. I haven't used the VT series, they're supposed to sound better.

Turkeydude - if you're not going to use the sansamp tones and are just looking for a clean preamp then I don't see the logic is paying for a Tech 21 rack pre. There's lots of other options that can get you what you're looking for - for less $$$ than a Tech 21 pre.

Alright I'll check those out tonight.

On to gear I guess. What do you all think of the Darkglass b3k/b7k pedals/preamps?
Dear new dude,

We talk about all that is heavy. Life is heavy. Riffs are heavy. Gear is heavy. We support each other. We don't talk shite about each other. We do t judge people's gear. We use whatever we can find to make the biggest sound possible.

Bands, mostly covered. There are kinda two different styles in this genre. The more 70's dark rock, and then the more metal, total annihilation.

Rock bands: Goatsnake, The Atomic Bitchwax, Blind Dog, Graveyard, Red Fang, Melvins, Weedeater, Torche, Spirit Caravan, Fu Manchu, Valkyrie, Acid King...

Metal: High On Fire, Black Cobra, Bongripper, YOB, Ufomammut, Primitive Man, Pallbearer...

Gear is all over. Some of us here got full blown custom everything. Others have the cheapest crap out there.
