Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Ever have one of those nights where you dream epically long, stressful, somewhat disturbing dreams that seem to go on for years, then when you wake up you're exhausted, feel like you've aged 10 years and it messes with your head for hours afterward?

I had that last night. Exhausted and weird today. Weird.

I used to have dreams like that, which would recur every year or two. Like visiting pocket universes of alternate reality. Sometimes pleasant, sometimes negative, sometimes just weird and disorienting.

Hey a stoner/doom fan from Singapore cool! I used to spend summers there and in Malaysia. My uncle had a condo off the woodlands Red Line train station.

Is fister or someone in fister sponsored by GUitar Fetish, they used to say something on there site about fister.

Of this I am not sure, but I doubt it. I honestly don't even know what Guitar Fetish is, but I still highly doubt it. They are cool dudes, with a tight grip on the STL metal scene and a rapidly growing popularity across Europe. I drink with Kenny (bass/vocals) every now and then when he hosts a trivia night called "Arbitrary Judgement" at a bar that he and several of my close friends and former bandmates work. Easily the most offensive trivia night I have taken part in. Victory results in free drinks. Generally something not as tasty that must be chugged. Last time I played I "won" two rounds. My prize was 3 pints of stag that had a starburst floating in them for like 20 minutes or so. The starburst had to be eaten. Marcus (guitar) bought my sunn 215b a few weeks back. Also a very cool gentleman.

A buddy of mine turned me on to the BBE Sonic Stomp/Sonic Maximizer and now I can't imagine a pedalboard without it.

I used to dig the BBE sonic maximizer in my compressor, but that was all I liked about the unit. Then one day I realized I was no longer a fan of the processing. diff'rnt strokes and what not.

Trace Elliot v type if you can find one cheap. Still not a fan of the baked in sansanp tone. I bought a rack version since it was a crazy pawn shop deal and had the mid control. V type is based on the alembic preamp wich both sound really good.

The alembic pre is a fender stack, would either of those really be leagues beyond the BBE or even the Fender rack pre? Speaking of, I haven't heard much anywhere about the fender pre.

Ampegfuzz, isn't the baked in SansAmp tone supposed to be "Ampeg"? I use that setting, on Ye Olde SABDDI, and I feel like it is Ampeg-y. I do have tin ears, though, so YMMV.

I wasn't really a fan of the baked in tone either. It made me feel like my bass and gear sounded like every other bass and rig with an active sansamp in the chain. Felt very vanilla. However, I was under the impression that that tone was more or less dependent on the presence setting, so all the way CC would be minimal to no sansamp tone.

Credit card bills suck, y'all.

Bye bye SB-2, Hello slightly smaller mountain of debt.

It is supposed to be ampeggy but it's far from the real thing. Some people just can't stand the baked in Sansamp tone. I'm one of them. It can sound great when other people use it, but with my basses and amps it's never worked out. I haven't used the VT series, they're supposed to sound better.

Turkeydude - if you're not going to use the sansamp tones and are just looking for a clean preamp then I don't see the logic is paying for a Tech 21 rack pre. There's lots of other options that can get you what you're looking for - for less $$$ than a Tech 21 pre.

I am curious what models you speak of. I have seen several RPMs and RBIs used for like $150-$175. *Most* of the other preamps I have seen barring the solid state BBE pre, were closer to the $250-$400 range or far more. Really I am looking for flexible mid control (hence my interest int he RPM over the RBI) and a relatively clean signal. Most if not all of my dirt comes from pedals.

Gotta feeling you will fit in just fine here.

EEEEyup. Were they nice tots at least?

I got dreams like that from time to time, the coolest part is that it seems like all of them are in the same place/city. Mostly pleasant things, though. Or weird as fvck.
But I've always had pretty crazy dreams.

What's your take on the RBI vs RPM?
I find all the SA stuff to be very one dimensional. They do what they do very well, but not much else. I like to tone of the RBI better than the RPM, but I find the RPM to be a better all around option because of the parametric mid. Really the two in series is the way to go. Neither peg the 'Peg tone. All that said, I find the Aguilar TH to be a better option.

But can it drive a power amp? I was actually considering getting a GK MB800 for use as a preamp/backup power.

Just read from the Aguilar website that the TH pedal can drive a power amp. Interesting. I don't know how I feel about my sole preamp being on the floor, but it could be cool. I have been intrigued by the aggies for a while, but never enough to drop the coin.

HNNNGG thats sweet. Strangely though, my peaveys have left me bass gas free. I think I just have an amp fetish.

Besides just the "namesake" radness, I tried out a red Midtown at a local shop and it was killer. If it'd been Pelham, I'd've taken it home. I could totally gig with a Midtown and my EpiBird (and the Chinabacker).
