Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I have been bingeing Walking Dead and just catching up on here now. I stumbled on Kava from Jan mentioning the Yogi kava tea, which is pretty good to get an idea of kava. I buy the actual root for about 6 months now and it is life-changing to me. It removes anxiety, calms your mind and body, makes you sleep restfully and wake up refreshed. I think they estimate that Pacific Islanders have used the root for 3000 years as a communal intoxicant and medicine. Higher doses, depending on the strain, can be euphoric but you keep your mental clarity. Some strains are like a muscle relaxer. It takes some prep work to make it traditionally(not too bad though) or you can buy the more micronized or instant. It doesn't taste great, straight sort of like licking a wet rock. I mix it in V8 Splash orange pineapple so my girlfriend can drink it too. I use it medicinally daily and recreationally at nights and weekends. Migraining hard today so I am not very descriptive about it like I usually am so I will add some links here. The Kava Forums are a great place to find info with very helpful and chill dudes like on here. They even a cool Kava Metal Soundtrack thread on there. They approve the best vendors who sell Noble root and bash the bad vendors that sell Tudei root(bad stuff)on there, so it is a great place for root reviews before purchases. Root usually costa about $32 to up to $70 a pound but $50 shipped is about average. There are some good deals I know about it. The bummer is there is a sort of RT period, reverse tolerance. Sometimes it takes a few weeks to really feel it. Once you break through RT you feel it all the time and need less amounts of root. I got krunk a few times on it during my RT and always felt the medicinal effects but now I get pretty consistent krunks out of it. It's not mind spacey like green but still euphoric and sometimes it can remind of that good beer buzz when you feel good but aren't plastered. You have to avoid buzzkills and find a nice quiet space to listen to the kava as they say so you can really melt into your couch to some good music. It also works great for stressful times at work or when I have to be in crowds(not a big fan of crowds unless they are shutting up and listening to the music playing).
Here is probably the best Kava 101

An inexpensive but easy way to check out some kava is the Kava King Instant. Pretty strong too, just shake up well in water or juice and slam. Works best on an empty stomach. I keep this at work but make traditional root at home.

The best kava is Gourmet Hawaiian Kava, the guru farmer Chris grows it and sells his own and some from Fiji and Vanuatu too. His Hawaiian Mo'i and Mahakea is strong!!!

Kalm with Kava is good stuff too. I love his Fiji Loa Waka root it is killer. His Borogu is good too but not as intense

Any questions hit me up, I can talk kava all day long and love turning new people on to it as I think it is much better than booze and has great medicinal benefits.

dude, thanks.. I just saved all that to really peruse. I have a local coffee shop that probably also carries it because they have ALL kinds of stuff.. mission of the day!

There are some kava bars throughout the country, none in my neck of the woods sadly. I am actually thinking about selling some at farmers markets and music festivals in my area as a little side job in the future. I would love to get away from computer work and open a kava bar, but the thought of a business failure scares me too much to try.

Not sure why, but the lava taste description of "licking a wet stone" has me wanting to try it.

LOL. I can drink it straight with a little chaser. Some strains like Tongan and Fijian are lighter and don't taste too bad. Vanuatu kava is rough to take down, it has a sort of an extra peroxide taste added to the wet rock taste. I think it is more like wet plant roots which it actually is. Someone at work had watered there spider plant and when I walked by I got a craving for kava. I kind of went yum as I walked by from the smell almost subliminally. You don't need to drink much anyway. I do about four to five ounces in the morning and at night I will do a couple 8 ounce cups. You slam it and rinse your mouth and it's no big deal, it's not like drinking harsh shots. And like I said it mixes awesome with V8 Splash.

I tried to get into it a few times but it never really stuck. Kept coming back to coffee so that's where i stayed.

I have gotten away from coffee and mostly drink decaf green tea and herbal teas now. But with fall my migraine season kicked in daily again and even though I am sleeping great they make me lethargic. Caffeine never gave me much boost anyway so want to try the matteine in Yerba mate.

There is a Doomer on the kava forums that said he would love to find a kava bar that plays doom at 1/5th the normal volume. I got a kick out of that. The real bars in the islands are called Nakamals and they are low key, dark, and quiet so you can listen to the kava. Most don't even allow women to avoid the kruzzkills lol.

Here is a tree being shaped for use as a nakamal.

Just dropped the car off for an alignment along the yuppy store section of Main Street. Stopped in the tea/food/wine shop on the way back and got some yerba mate to try. Not bad tasting. Forgot to rinse the particles off the tea infuser before tossing it in so it is the tea that eats like a meal. Wish I had my kava gear at work to do it up right or my French press.

That was one thing I hated about the mate, couldn't find a way to keep the grit and flake out of the infusion.

My bosses are a Ukrainian woman who was a physician in Ukraine and is a random manager here and my immediate supervisor was a Colonel in the Red Army back in the 80s. They aren't very receptive to suggestions lol

In mother Russia, Kava drinks you.

Also, all this talk about low end in pedals has perked my interest. I have been pretty disappointed with most pedals, as chopping off the low end kind of defeats the purpose for me. No blend = no good. Honestly the best overall drive sound I have ever gotten is from my JGR pre. All the knobs on that change the sound, but I have yet to find a setting that doesnt sound fuqking fantastic.

You ever run that pre into the power section of the CL400? I bet that would be awesome.

Not doom at all and may have mentioned it, but my rice cooker is killing it lately. Learned you can make so much more than a few cups of white rice and steamed veggies in it. I've been making steamed corn breads, beer and sausage cabbage, collards and plantains (using cabbage n beer pot likker), cakes, trying homemade mac and cheese today.

Edit: Pot Likker is a totally cool band name, dibs on that awesome sauce.

Jan inspired me to diet and I only had rice once in over a month when we went out for Sushi. I miss rice and starches but glad to be losing some weight.

I'm selling some microphones online. A guy from CL has been going back and forth with me for a week. He's out of town, wants me to come deliver it to him. I can't get over to him, said I would ship it for $10 extra (probably half the cost of shipping) and he kind of made some kind of snide remark like "it's not that far man, just come over here and I'll buy it", after I told him I work all day and I can't make a 2-3 hour round trip on a weeknight. So I basically blew him off with a sarcastic remark back, then he emailed me straight back and said he would do PayPal and shipping. I kind of want to just ignore him, since he ticked me off. Am I being bullheaded?

Well he caved after you made the remark back so it wouldn't hurt to ship, just insure it in case he pulls something later. Take his cash.
