Well, things are up in my musical world.
First off, ran into a guy I haven't seen in 25 years. didn't know him well, but we have several mutual friends. I've been car shopping (and hope to get a 2009 Chevy HHR today...not that I was shooting for that specific car...just need something decent at a good price.)
Turns out this guy I mentioned owns the car lot where we're getting the car. he's a drummer and said his band's bass player ditched them (too busy) and wants me to start jamming with them, maybe gigging once or twice a month. Not sure how it'll go. He's an old metalhead from way back, but has wide tastes and said he'd describe this current band as "beer drinking music." Sort of alt-country stuff, etc.
So I may actually have a real, live band situation soon. Have to see how I mesh with them, how much I like the music itself, etc. They do a lot of originals apparently but also some covers from old Johnny Cash to Wilco-ish stuff from what he said. I don't know how much I'd be into the actual music, but I'm gonna jam with them soon and see.
Also, my recording project, which has up to now been kind of lo-fi surf/garage 60s sort of stuff has already mutated like a rampaging virus. The guy I'm working on it with is a great guy and the most incredible living artist I know of, in many mediums, but he's totally schizo when it comes to working on projects. He just changes up so fast, wants to cover different territory, do different stuff...lay down one thing then move on. Makes it kind of tough sometimes because you never know what he's gonna want to do or if one day he's making plans about this and that, but the next day wants to do a 180. I love him for it though.
Anyway, our "new direction" is towards THE HVY. He's got a drummer on the hook who is already recording some doomy stuff with another band, and the plan is to cut some stuff on much better, hi-fi recording equipment and try for a dual bass, drums of doom setup. We've already started working up some stuff and IMO it is sounding pretty damn good.
I think it'll be a blast, and I've wanted to get heavier, evil and mightier than the hand of an avenging god, so we'll see how this goes.
It may well be that we do this long enough to get 12 or 20 songs in the can and then he'll want to go all folk rock or do 50s country covers or something. All of which would be fine.
Through all this I've also decided to work on my own recording project a little. Just whatever strikes me. THAT stuff so far is sounding like science fiction, futuristic harsh new wave or something...like Suicide (but with guitars) or Chrome or something.
Update concluded.
