@Muddslide I would dig being in an alt-country band. Lately I have been thinking that alt-country might be the most doable music that is actually enjoyable music to me that I can probably find others interested in, in my neck of the woods.

Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Great minds think alike...this is pretty much our current operational scenario. We squeezed enough juice out of the garage/surf project for at least an album and an ep. We may put together a CD release for most of it and put out one or two 7-inchers. We aren't abandoning it completely, just doing something else for a while. We most likely will get back to it.
We also have a huge backlog of experimental electronic stuff we've worked on together off and on for several years and never done anything with. (I used to collect old analog synths.) There's something in that stuff too.
But I'm really looking forward to the heavy stuff. My friend is inclined more towards real slow sludge doom at the moment, while I think the stuff I contribute might be more upbeat, or slightly so. I think it will result in a good mix of all-heavy stuff but with some dynamics. He tells me the drummer he's got on board absolutely kills and is a real cool guy. Right now we are working with a drum machine track which will then get erased when the real drums get added.
Anyone think the "two-bass and drums" setup might be cool? We both play guitar too, so we might change things up some within the heavy context. Kicking around the name "Dead Goat" for the project.
True. They apparently do pretty well, gig-wise. The guy said the vocalist is a very talented, very attractive young filly. I think they all have good taste and we wouldn't be doing modern Nashville-type pop/bro-country or hick hop or anything. I love a lot of stuff like older Flying Burrito Brothers as well as newer like some Ryan Adams stuff (I dug Whiskeytown a good bit), Palace Brothers, Lambchop, Grace & Tony, etc. I also think that (aside from lyrics) I can write some pretty good stuff in that vein.
Man, it feels good just TRYING to get back in the saddle. You gotta realize, I have barely even played with any other people for nearly 15 years. Much less played a show.
I do like a LOT of different kinds of music...I just thought if I ever fell in with a band again I'd be relegated to playing crap I hated. I don't think that will be the case here.
Yeah, I hear you. Being in Oklahoma I think it would go over pretty well. There is a lot you can bag and rag on regarding Oklahoma and culture, but truth is, there has always been something of a cool music scene here, going back to the early punk days. Always been some interesting bands, cool people, wild shows and just a pretty good circuit of a wide range of outlets and something for every taste.
I am posting this one just for you, brother. I may have posted it here before because I loved this band and this song in particular haunts me. I don't know if I'd classify Acetone as an "alt country" band necessarily, but they mined that territory some, to be sure.
Someone earlier mentioned Acetone by name, and you were talking about taking in some good mellowness, so here ya go:
Though I don't dig the new stuff as much, Lucero is a killer alt/country band.

Yeah there is that alternative overlap of bands in that scene. That video has a kind of Yo La Tengo vibe to it. I stumbled on this channel and is has a nice mix of stuff I dig, like MMJ, Wilco, Jay Farrar, DBT, the Jayhawks, etc.
@The_Janitor I have been digging Lucero since you posted them a while back, I'm not big on the songs with horns but dude has a great voice and good lyrics.

Rebels, Rogues and Sworn Brothers is probably my favorite of theirs.
I always took a shine to Slobberbone for the use of dirt and flange pedals on some of their songs.

I can dig a little alt. country in small doses.
Still haven't tried either comp on my drop-tuned clean tone. Probably will at next Heavycraft practice. I'll try the CS-2 first. It does cut a little bit of low end, but that may not be a bad thing in this instance since i'm trying to balance that low (A, A#, B, C) with the top three strings.

I have heard the Joyo Compressor is subtle and works good with bass, cheap to try out too.
Can you post any of this? I would seriously like to hear some of this material. When I hear your description (goth country/post punk) I think of maybe instro Gun Club or Flesh Eaters maybe? Sounds like it would be cool as hell and right up my alley.
Also would like to hear some of THIS. I can not really express how hard the "Psychocandy" album hit me when it came out...1986 I think? I would have been 18. It made a big impact on all my friends.

Bob almighty. I literally had forgotten all about Slobberbone, and I actually caught them live a couple times. Wow.
Vegas always has the potential to be fun. Under the right circumstances, I would live there. Other parts of Nevada I dig too.
I've been off here more than on lately, though I think I've caught up with the posts on this thread, but forgive my ignorance--is MDT playing somewhere in Vegas or are you going for other reasons? If you have a show there, somehow I missed the memo. Either way, have a blastula.
Sorry to take up so much space here, but I just heard from home that a huge, heavy box got delivered today. It's from my buddy in Texas who was going to gift some pedals to me. I don't know what all's in there, and the suspense is killing me, but I know he told me he loaded the box down with cool stuff and that I should make sure and unwrap every piece of wadded-up paper, etc. in the box that was used for packing material, because he filled it with stuff.
I'll report back when I know...this guy...I can't convey what a great friend he is. I helped him out years back giving him a place to live, feeding his skinny ass, etc. and I think he feels like he can never repay me or something. He's given me so much cool stuff over the years...
PS-- Eagle has landed. Just picked up a 2009 Chevy HHR with under $80 K miles on it. We test drove more than a dozen cars on three different lots and just really liked this one the best and thought it was the best deal. It also gets pretty damn good reviews. I hope it is decent and reliable and at least lasts us until it's paid off!

Funny and great twang in the guitar. Heavy handed on the backing tracks but otherwise pretty good. I'll have to listen to more of them.
I wish we had a gig out there! We haven't played outside the Midwest. Going out the Mrs. for a cousin's wedding / some RnR.
Cool. Seriously wish you a great time. Have you ever been? Vegas is one of those places that's just really not like any other place. Like New Orleans. there's just not another city anywhere like either of those places...they are so idiosyncratic it's like going through a space warp.
The frontman is the voice of the squidbillies or one of them at least.
LOVE Unknown Hinson. Saw him live a few years ago, great show. He is the voice of Early Cuyler of Squidbillies, and if you're familiar with either Unknown Hinson or Squidbillies, the two characters are essentially the same. One's just a squid. Yup. I'm gonna stop now, because I could just go on forever about this guy. I freaking LOVE his stuff!
