Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I was messing around with my Drake Custom bass the other day, decided to record something real quick with it. It really hasn't been getting enough use lately and it's an awesome instrument and really comfortable to play. So I decided to mess around with some simple noise rock style riffs (The Jesus Lizard, Unsane, etc. inspired). I ran my Joyo UD into my W&C Pickle Pie B, and turned the blend almost all the way down, so it was just mixing a bit of fuzz into the ovedrive, to get a nice mean growl. I may try playing around with this setup in a loop and blending a little bit of clean in under it all. I really liked the tone I got out of it, for this kind of style.

The sustain is decent, I didn't crank the gain way up on the pedals though. The bass is pretty dark, smooth and punchy sounding naturally, so I just dialed in everything in to get it to growl as nasty as possible. I could probably even dial back the gain a bit, to give it some more clarity, I haven't heard it in a mix yet. No guitar over that this time, because my only guitar currently is setup for B standard and the Drake is in Eb and I'm hitting a lot of open string pickup notes in that riff.

Ive got a warwick streamer double buck. Its pretty awesome, but they have ALOT of lows and on some amps its a little troublesome when you need headroom. There is a lot of growl too that doesn't always fit, but there's ways around that. I find them strangely a little mid scooped, but if I play on the bridge pick up then it balances out.

So I remember a couple of people on here saying they have or had an Ibanez ATK bass.

I played the lowest model (I think it is the 200?) yesterday and I was blown away. The fit and finish of that bass is much closer to a $1000 bass, and the tone was great and insanely versatile. I could believe the difference in tone between the three pickup settings and I didn't even have time to mess with the EQ.

If anybody has been using one of these let me know what you think because it is definitely on my short list of basses now.

Yup, I've got the ATK205 (5 string version of the one you tried out), i think it's shaging great. I don't really have anything bad to say about it - bridge pickup is mean and aggressive, neck pickup is fat and warm, EQ is very flexible and sounds great, neck is fast and comfortable but not too skinny... I'm really happy with it.

I dig the riff, and the tone of the clip, but but the fuzz kind of covered all the tone of the bass. Got any clean clips I might have missed?

I always thought they looked like a nice package but this was the first time I had seen one in a store. The nut width combined with the thin neck is too much for me on some Ibanez basses, but that one had one of the best feeling necks I have ever played so that fear was not justified. Also, I wasn't sure how much of a difference the pickup setting would make but it works so well. You can go from a P to a J to MM with a flick of a switch. Sure it doesn't sound exactly like any of those basses but that general area.

The only thing I don't love about the bass (and never have) is the huge chrome tail piece, but now they are making a dark wood model so that might make it acceptable for me.

Hey Tractorr, there is a band from Germany called "Rotor", whose bass player uses them exclusively (from what I can tell off YT clips), and there are some live clips that give a good tone example of what this can do in a stoner rock setting.

I played one at GC one time, it was one of the higher end models, and 2 things jumped out at me: the neck is baseball bat big, and it was as heavy as a dead hooker.

Hmm, the higher end one must have a different neck because the neck on the 200 was smaller than the neck on my P or my Spector, but it is somewhat thicker than other Ibanez basses. It was kind of heavy bass but that doesn't bother me too much.

Edit: I actually just checked and they have the same necks.

What kind of necks are you playing on that those are that big?
