Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

We did the original Hulu paid version, then the Premium and you should hear my wife go off about this subject. She gets a real bee in her bonnet when one of those "sorry, we're showing you a commercial anyway" things comes up.
Pretty much the same thing here. I am perfectly happy to support the makers of said shows. Thats what my subscription is for. Thats why I use Netflix and Amazon Prime now. Every couple of months Hulu sends me a "Please Come Back" email. I'll get the free 2 week trial and at the end cancel with a lengthy diatribe about how Netflix doesn't have commercials.
Its a Ping Pong game.

@Corey Y Channeled your wife's rage today, but I felt yours yesterday.

so I drove with my buddy to the guys house to play yesterday. I was told on the way that the guy recently got into a red fang kick and wanted to try some heavy.

We get there and he's got a $1300 8 string guitar and $75 peavey SS combo. He had us show up with half stacks... Kind of amused I side track and make an alluding joke to a tree being in my friends truck we could cut down before jamming. The dude freaked out like I had offered to share a needle I found with him...

We install our overkill setup and he says what tuning? We were both close to Drop D so we told him that. He then goes on to say his 8 string is set up special for some E tuning, and can't change it and we can't match it... Ok. Then we point out a 6 string on his wall and he's like I don't really play it anymore since I got into prog... My friend asks him to play something and he just djent riffs a bit and says he wants to start a band he has songs already. We say play some songs, then everytime he finishes a riff says Nevermind I improvised that. So he never played a "song". Then we just cranked up and jammed without him for 30 min and got up to leave.

Then he asks for a ride, as his cars in the shop. It's on our way home so we say ok. Then on the ride he's like "so you have trees in here, can I have some?!" Then proceeds to tell us he's 50/50 on the idea because it kills his death vocals? And it weeds out the bad eggs to freak out when offered initially...? ***

Sounds like my misadventures in trying out guitar players via CL. poopie's horrible.

Hulu blows, barely worth the $8.00 a month. Been watching a lot of stuff on network/cable channel websites, on YouTube, paying per-episode for must-see stuff on Amazon and sometimes Netflix (also serious content issues on that service, IMO)
Content is a strange game on those services. Its all contract based with the major studios. Everything Netflix/Amazon buys the rights to comes in a package with 3 dozen worthless titles that waste my time sifting through. Seems to go in cycles though. Next year Netflix gets a ton of Disney content, with includes Lucasfilm and Marvel now, so there'll be a big content injection very soon. Always wish they'd keep up their 20th Century Fox deals though. Ebb and flow, things change.

Really though my wife and I don't get alot of time to watch TV so the little bit of content we find on either service that IS worth watching is more than we can keep up with. This has only gotten more difficult since my daughter has started paying attention to what is on the screen. Severely limits what we can watch with her around. Its taken 2 months for her and I to get through the first season of Hannibal(killer show by the way).
We used to watch horror nonstop the more subtitles the better; nowadays doesn't work out much.

Honestly we're in love with The Great British Baking show right now. Goddamn fascinating all those different cakes/breads/"biscuits". Plus at no time is the "network" attempting to inject artificial drama into it. So much different than Food Network shows where its more about the drama than the food/science.

Better than Hulu.

+1 to the Great British Baking show, fascinated by all of the minutiae of weird British baked goods. Bummed that the season is over already.

I need to check out this British baking show. Not sure my brain needs more baking exposure though
Your brain can take it. Honestly that show, trees and a snack is about the best evening I can imagine.

Plus I'm sure you'll get more out of it than I do. I just watch and think "NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM".

You'll probably get useful insight to your job or yell at the TV for amateur mistakes like an obsessed football fan.

Can't recommend it enough.

The stuff I want to watch seems to constantly shift back and forth between Netflix and Hulu. I have Amazon Prime, but their video service is a huge mess. They claim to have a series, but then it turns out they just have a couple seasons, organized under different titles (their GUI is TERRIBLE for finding tv shows) and the newest one you have to buy. The only reason I give Hulu an edge on content that may be available also on Netlfix is that their picture quality and streaming is consistently better. Totally on purpose, because Comcast owns Hulu and extorts Netflix with choked speeds for contract negotiations pretty openly.

That sounds like a very familiar situation. Just substitute djent for 12 bar blues and that's pretty close to the stuff I've dealt with a few dozen times over the last couple years.

Yeah the Brits may not have the best taste in food but I NEED MORE MEAT PIES IN AMERICAN CUISINE!!!!!!

I love any excuse to yell at electronics.

I'm actually pretty open to play most music, and I have super lax expectations. He wasn't even a bad guitarist. He just made it all weird every step of the way. I'd look the other way on all of it, if he had just told us before coming that he happens to only use one guitar in some non traditional tuning (I think now he was just using it like a bass VI tuned a half step down with two more high strings). If he'd said that we could have planned accordingly or stayed home.

Given I'm half-English (I had marmite toast for breakfast), I spent a fair amount of time over there and ate a lot of English food, and people sh#t on it all the time. Sure, it might not LOOK pretty, pretty beige, but it's good, hearty food. Melton Mowbray Pork pies, Sunday Roasts, Beef Wellingtons, Scotch Eggs, pasties, Full Breakfasts, Bangers. And desserts? Way ahead on the chocolate and biscuit and cake front. I mean, c'mon, Custard drizzled over cakes...mmmm.

Oh yeah, and Cheese. CHEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSEEEEEEEEE.

I'm pretty easy going most of the time when trying to find musicians. At this point it's just that I jam with something and they never show up again. Usually they cancel a jam, then take a week to answer an email and so on and eventually after a month or two of trying to schedule a second jam I just give up and never hear from them again. I've had a few people that just flat out couldn't play and wasted my time, but usually it's just people seeming normal in person and then flaking out completely after the fact. With the exception of the death metal band I played with a couple times. They were all cool and great guys, I just couldn't afford to drive 1.5 hours each way to practice once or twice a week and kick in $80 a month on a practice space. Which sucked, because I genuinely liked the music and the people. Old school death metal isn't my first choice for a band to play bass in, but it is one of my favorite genres to listen to.

...Beef Wellingtons, Scotch Eggs...

I am a pretty committed Anglophile, and have lived and traveled widely. I also have pretty adventurous tastes with regards to food. Not that Beef Welly or Scotch Eggs are all that exotic, but I've never had either (!)

I've also never, to my recollection, had Eggs Benedict, and not sure I've ever tried Hollandaise sauce for that matter.

I suck!

Don't forget these:

This just proves my theory that f@ggots are only edibly acceptable when doused with a rich West Country sauce.

Eggs Benedict is amazing. I could put hollandaise on anything.
