Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Replaced the Model J's in my custom Jazz with Quarter Pounders. I dig it. A bit more scooped (due to the higher induction from the more winds/higher output) compared to the Model J's but gobs more output and growl. I prefer Alnico V to ceramic as well. Nice that they use true pole piece magnets as opposed to ceramic bars and slugs like cheaper pickups.

PM me if you Wanna trade one of those model J pickups (if it's black) for a cream model P?

Neat little rig! I highly recommend trying out a Jensen Blackbird if you can afford it. Haven't found a better speaker yet...

What's a speaker it compares to?

I meant to post this here originally. NPD. Black Arts Toneworks BLACK FOREST! Recommended by Stefan Henskens of Astral Cult. Just grimy, ugly and sludgy, Dirt Nap, swamp bottom, back door grilling, stanked up, raunchy, finger licking goodness. So happy with this purchase. I live out on a farm with no way to test it out (or anything else for that matter) and it was a bit of a crap shoot that TOTALLY paid off. Not for everyone...but for the rare few its on.

I will post some audio and or video later tonight/tomorrow.

Going to Austin for the holidays

Bringing my Vox wah and Joyo Trem to get my mod ideas in a row with dad then get the parts and do them or set it up to finish here.

The trem is opto based, and it's got a trem pot for the bias, that's not shape right? Because another mod shows a resistor being turned into a pot to make a shape control.

So what does a bias do in this circuit?

Here's the dimensions mine came out to. Definitely different in some ways from Johns, but I was going for a bit more low end linearity. Used Faital 15PR400's. Port size is 6" width. Can't recall final length, I'd have to remeasure. I'd recommend moving handles lower, otherwise it's served me very well.

Note that these sizes are for 1", because I used solid 1/2" walnut boards over 1/2" baltic to make a perfect seal. Edges are faux-rabbeted with the two plys. It's no lightweight, but it's also stiff and sexy as fxck.

Scanned through John's post to the point he was selling one... When you say move the handles down. Would you say center them on the side would be a good target?

Johns clips were selling me on the Faital then in the end he keeps the 3015... Funny shisnit.

One of these days I'll build one. Prefer to have some castors on it no matter the weight and rails on the back. Thanks for the plans.

Maybe just a smidge up from centered top-bottom. If they're perfectly centered, it might be a little tippy on top when carrying. I'd say a few inches above center would be ideal. One thing I noticed with my Faital's that really concerned me at first was that they smelled pretty bad for a month or so when I first used them (giving them only 240W RMS, which is nothing). Had that "hot speaker" smell, which had me worried that I was hurting them. It's gone away now though, was likely just the adhesives and whatnot out-gassing from their first warm-up cycles.
