Well, after having nearly 3 weeks with the Rick exclusively, I figured it was time to pickup the Precision again and give it an A/B. Feel wise, there's really not much to say. I'm obviously still far more accustomed to the Precision, I've been playing it as my main instrument since...'07? '08? A long while. It's home. However, the Rick is very comfortable. Different, but I've already gotten pretty used to it. Yes, the neck is bulkier, but I realize that that doesn't bother me much anymore, since I barely touch the back of the neck at all anymore (it's really just lightly cupped by the curve of my thumb). Given it's a v63, there's no binding for me to be bothered by (although, having played 4003s and Tele-basses a sharp corner doesn't bother me much either).
The main differences here are the sounds (obviously), but honestly, they aren't as far apart as I would have thought. I love how ganky the Rick is. The neck pickup solo'd is nice, especially with the tone rolled off, but given I normally play wide open, my preference is for the horseshoe wide open, or both pickups wide open. And really, the horsehoe solo'd is the closest to the Precision bass. But, to compare the two, the Rick, like I said, sounds ganky. It's almost a..rubbery sound. More like a rubber band. The Precision is more of a roar, a bit more low-mid heft in the voicing. This is all settings on the amp the same, vol 6, treb 10, bass 2, countour 10, bass boost off. Adjusting the EQ with the Rick to 5 on the bass and with the bass boost on really brings out the lows more on it. There's some stuff that just sounds right played on a Rick, and other stuff just sounds right on the P.
I'm sure as I settle in with it more I'll become more adjusted to the Rick as well, but for now, super glad I added it to the collection. It's a very strong addition, even if it won't displace the Precision in the long run. I'll need to do another A/B when I get new strings for both as well.
