Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Decided to try the new tubes in da MACE, cause I'm just not happy tone wise without it. Popped the new sovtek lightbulbs in and BAM!!! Immediate difference...WAY louder, no more fizzle out gain. Granted this is all at low volume, but the improvement over the old tubes even at low volume is crazy. Ill give er a proper work out tonight at practice. Still plan on taking it in to get her re-caped and went through at some point though, just glad I more than likely won't need to spend the MACE and spend it on the VTA 400 when it gets here.

Good news about the Mace, Max!

If you want to save money on the Mace I could probably do the caps. I'm a bit more confident now that I've done one without shaging it up. :)

You still playing the Mead Party tomorrow? The woman that runs Bos is a family friend, she and my sister have been friends for a while and she spent a couple afternoons at my folks' place learning to brew beer from my old man. Should be a good show, Lords of the Trident are entertaining, and I love Cribsh*tter.

Ampeg is put back together and functioning. The driver is not capable of handling high volume so it and the trem module will be the next upgrades. Reverb still doesn't work, don't know if that's the tank being bad or if it's somehow connected to the trem module, so I'll see if it comes back after I swap that. Other than that, it sounds awesome and is a super fun little amp that just loves pedals.

Yup! Should be a good time. We play our longest set set at at least an hour. One of which I dubbing Kavafied, which will be an all out free form jam, itll go super well or terribly. Either way fun.

NYE dolled by a work Christmas party. Couldn't have had more than 3 hours of sleep, but I had a pretty girl to kiss at midnight. Cant ask for much better.

Pics. Not of your hand.

Finally got round to watching The Force Awakens. Feel like I could have saved some money and just rented A New Hope.

Maybe I'm just cynical.

I was underwhelmed. Felt like a lackluster drawn out main plot with a short and relatively oblique sub plot thrown in the middle. Weak ass light saber fights. Rylo Ken was a comically poor casting decision. All peppered with corny cameos. Ray was also a character that I felt had a very splotchy and ill defined back story.

Sometimes it feels less like you're paid for skill and more for your tolerance.

Still playing with that sealed 2x18?
I saw your 1x18thread.

Downtown, I mostly use my sealed 118 with two small, soft dome mid drivers. That's plenty for those gigs. The 218 is a beast, but way more than I need there :)

At first I was all "This is pretty funny, some homage to the originals", but by the end I was like " Oh no wait, they've just plagiarised the entire plot"

Hey dudes. Built this 408 clone. Looking at a tube amp. Opinions? By the way, haven't been on because I just got a kick ass job! Manager!

Welp, the dude with 4 JBL K140s never got back to me and the listing has been removed from CL, so I guess I'm SOL there. But a 2000s cab (emptly) just popped up locally, Imma look into that.

Also, had my best New Years ever. For every News Years I've been stuck at home, on the tiny island I live on. This year my funk band got asked to play at a house party of some good friends. This cool doom band opened (Moog+drums+Bass, had no idea they were around, gotta talk to these dudes, they were great fun), and then we bloody wrecked it. Got as heavy as we could for funk, which is pretty heavy.

What are you looking for in a tube head? Lush power tube overdrive, or big head room? Tbh, I've wanted to try my valve Sunn heads with some of those big Acoustic cabs for a while.
For contemporary commercial heads I'd check out the Fender 100T or the Ampeg V4-B.
For vintage? Well, Hiwatts are cool, but I think everyone knows my favorite amps. You can never go wrong checking them out...

Or hey, a 100w Marshall (preferably a plexi/1959 version) into a 408, plus another bassier rig, might be some gnarly business.

No fakers. Man I need to move to the pacNW. Sunn gear abundant. Missouri is a suck hole of gear. Nothing but Trabens, low end imports and the occasional medium-high end piece of gear being sold by a blues lawyer asking way to much.

I spent my GC gift card on a bunch of patch cables and a used Aquapuss that my buddy had literally just bought for the store. Got that for $75. I tried it and don't care much for it at all. Glad to see I can get all of my money back and still move it at the low end of the value scale. Hopefully that moves fast. New cables allowed me to really load my board in a moderately intelligent way without being limited by cables. The good news, if I put my compressor after the BDPG, the BDPG plays nice with my modulation effects. That was a great discovery. I have my Shepards end feeding the boss phase shifter with the boss set to a medium rate step phase. Slow interactive swooshing with computer calculation sounds over it is totally not useful for my band but it sounds cool. The only issue now is that my fuzzes seem to lose their snap. I think putting the tuner in front and not just off the volume pedal to add a buffer will help.

Only other news is I have a messed up back at the moment, possible disk injury and could possibly be working on a hernia. No bulges, but my nut hurts when I walk and I've received no testicular trauma. Gotta see a doctor. The steady 12 hour days with no break are catching up to me.

I have no clue. This is my one cab solution for all gigs.
