Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Dude on another thread was asking for cab suggestions. He has a Verellen Meatsmoke 200 watt amp that he ABSOLUTELY wants to keep and use. He didn't feel his old flat back 810 was efficient enough for him to hear himself in his very loud band. Fair enough question, I thought. So what's the primary advice he was given?

YOU GUYS SHOULD TURN DOWN!

YOU'D BETTER BE WEARING HEARING PROTECTION!!!

WHAT, DO YOU GUYS PLAY ARENAS WITH NO PA?!

Then they go on to recommend super expensive modern hi-fi cabs with low sensitivity that this poor dude couldn't possibly want.

Of course you should protect your hearing if you play super loud, but this is a grown man here. Why do these jokers insist on treating loud players like stupid children?

Another reason to love the S/D room

I know. Every time someone asks for advice, and gives the entirely useful information of 'Yea, I play in a rock band, and we like to ROCK! So it gets fairly loud", everyone just treats them as if they're 9 with some condescending bull$!t like "Well, I'm glad that my band is mature enough to play quietly, you should get this 5 watt 2x3 combo and be like me, so you can want to die at 40 because your life is so god damn dull"

And then you can see those same people in a 'RIP Lemmy' thread going "man, that hit me so hard, Lemmy is my idol" :confused:

But people say stupid things on everything anyone posts on this forum, so what can you do?

Honestly I spent more time in that thread telling people their suggestions won't work. My one half hearted suggestion was a honky BFM Jack15, and they really won't work for most bassists.

I would like to put one together after I get my hands on a Peavey Minimega. That Kosmos might make their shy low-end usable. Which would make for a disastrously loud cabinet.

The BFM's would get him loud enough for sure if he was running 4 drivers. The mid hump might even overcome his baked in mid scoop.

Those Jack15 are supposed to be like 110db through their mids which is insanely sensitive for a single driver. From their chart i can't imagine many people being happy without allot of eq. If the mid scoop was in exactly the right place out might work out. In the wrong place it'd sound like a cow snorting.

Eh... Loud and honky is better than perfect tone that you cant hear.

Very true. In a mix. Can you imagine getting your new cabinet over to your practice space to try out out. You plug it in before anybody is there and it makes an obscene honking fart on the very first note, simultaneously deafening and repulsing you?
From reading the bfm forum i get the impression nearly any bass boost causes fartout.

About a great ago i got his CD of all of his plans. The dude is a solid designer, everything is really well braced and solid. But he's clueless when it comes to dumbasses and power tools.
I hate those plans with a vengeance. There is zero benefit to those 45° corner ports.

Sure PL Premium will fill in wrong cuts but it will look like shvt doing so.

The guy also has no respect for bassist who want an 8x10 sized cabinet. Sure he's ok with the PA having cabs on wheels but that's too much for us.

Well, it could be that he doesn't think most bass players want large cabs nowadays and he's mostly right. I've been prototyping a sealed 218 cab. To me it sounds insanely good and it's half the weight of some 810's, but I may not bring it to market because I have my doubts anyone would want one these days. If anything, I'll make a couple and just market them locally.

Regarding 45 degree angle ports, one small (possible) advantage is you get additional bracing along with your ports. Best I can come up with :) With some of my DIY Proto cabs that use porting, I've been perfectly happy with store bought Precision ports

Yeah i can see some bracing advantage over Precision Ports. Aircraft-style bracing is better bracing and miles easier to cut/assemble. Its just stupid to make people who just want to build a cabinet but protractor and angle gauges so they can make a jig to cut with. Then make another jig to glue with.
Fine i get that most woodworkers have this stuff laying about but those people don't really need the nitty gritty assembly instructions.

True few bassist want big cabs. It's just a shame to see all that business going to Emperor or some other clone company.

Yeah, companies that make guitar cabs then do a bass version as an afterthought...not for me.

FEARful plans are pretty simple for a novice builder, but certainly not everyone's cup of kava :)
