Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

As Janitor mentioned, early afternoon set in Midtown for GH. Our longest set yet, at over an hour and man is that exhausting haha...good crowd reactions, sang the one song I know how to, da MACE sounded better than ever, last show with Vulcan No.2 before I ship it off this week, highest paying gig yet, lots of mead, one of the other bands, Lords of the Trident, live performances were fantastic even if the heavy metal was decently standard. Grand time overall.

Still forever in the tone quest for GH though, and beside changing my lows rig to tube, I think another problem Im having is I may be tuned to low, I tune to C standard and drop A#, and I think Im just asking my old PVYs and basses of too much to reproduce such low lows well. So I think Im gonna try tuning up a bit, like D standard and drop C and see if that helps my tonehenge out. What y'all think?

Tuning down might help, doubt Hartley was thinking about Drop A when he was putting those amps together. Forgot to mention yesterday, but the bass tone was shaging EPIC with the PA/Sub support. They have a great system there and they're not afraid to crank that poopie up. Also saw Cathy, the owner digging on your set - which isn't a surprise, her favorite bands are High on Fire and Melvins - but awesome nonetheless.

Giant pot of chili on the stove, just got done registering for my next round of classes. Art History - pre historic through medieval and Music Appreciation. The Music Appreciation had a warning in bold letters: STUDENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO ATTEND AT LEAST TWO MUSICAL PERFORMANCES OUTSIDE OF CLASS. poopie, I do that anyway. Should be a breeze of a semester, it'll be nice to study stuff that actually interests me for a change.

If they are picky, go to your towns university and check out a couple classical or jazz performances.

I never knew there was a jazz bass version of a Roadstar. P and PJ basses but I never saw one of these before. I like the no pickguard look, the natural finish, and the heart shaped tuners. I almost impulse bought it but I'm not a jazz bass guy and it doesn't have the original pups. It was in rough shape too.

Just broke the news to one of the guitarists of PV(post-vega) that hes not in anymore. Took it pretty well, he said he saw it coming. Good guy, good guitarist, good songwriter but the style was way off. We wanna groove and jam, not complex proggy metal. Better now then later for both parties.

We may look for another second guitarist but we arent gonna be quick about it. Make sure theyre the perfect guy for the job.

There were quite a few models of Roadstars, they were changing something in this line almost every year.
It doesn't look that bad, my P is more beat up :) They are harder and harder to find in good shape. I doubt I'll get my hands on another lefty and I would sure love to.

Also: resuming band practices tomorrow after almost 3 week Christmas break. Serious ring mod gas. Probably end up with Moog MF-Ring pretty soon.

Emailed a guy about some reclaimed barn lumber to use for a headshell for the Altec power amp. Found one guy that's selling it by the board-foot which is much more enticing than the hundred other sellers that want to sell me an entire disassembled barn. Trying to decide whether or not I want to build a 1RU slot underneath so I can put a preamp in there. Might just keep it as a power amp/booster. Either way, headshell will be a quick and dirty job. will probably use expanded steel on the front to show off the toobs.

I had a really nice shaped pj 1985 Roadstar that I should of kept. I am not a maroon color fan, and it was hard to balance the volume of the p and j pickup when used together so I sold it. I got it local for $115 with a hard shell case.

These are surely under-appreciated basses. Only saw one more in the wild here in the last few years. Unsurprisingly, the owner loved it :)

I'll assume time warp since the things that were liked had nothing to do with S/D. But very few of my posts do so...

Similarly, I posted a piece of gear like two years ago on one of our threads and continue to this day getting random pm's asking if I still have it. A guy on reverb somehow found my lapsed ad for it and asked for it. I ask all these people what its importance is and none will answer me, soon as I say it's sold they clam up.

(People if you read this too, it's sold, but please pm me why it's so cool?)
