Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Have a new set of swing 66 in route to try on the ATK. Screwed up my order with bassstrings online. After selecting three Drop Zone sets and one 5 string set I noticed the price was the same. Deleted the Drop Zone but my edit of the 5 string set quantity didn't take. Serves me right ordering strings at 4am after a gig.

In the past I was a 100% rotosound guy. Well see how these compare to the D'Addario EXP for the long run and decide what to keep using long term. One thing is nice is at $23 for a 5 string set I could change them more often. Bad part is making sure they fit well on my 35" Gecko and the other 34" scale instruments in the stable.

I've been using dadgad on guitar at home, and it's kinda drop and the chording style makes sense. On bass it seems somewhat redundant? Any tips or things you drop tuning users do?

We play drop B in Centaurus, I just tune B F# B E A, but I tend to play more like a rhythm guitarist than just plain bass. Which I guess some people frown on, but I've always thought filled out our sound more. I try to incorporate a lot of double stops and chording.

Neurosis plays mostly in drop D and open D though right? Aside from a few open a and drop a songs? I know a storm of light does some sort of weird double drop a where they drop the two lowest strings to a at an octave then everything else standard.

B standard, drop A on a couple tunes. I use the DR strings with the spider on the cover, they're actually great for repeated drop and re-tunings. It's more heavier, we put those songs later in the set list and it's cool to get that much heavier. Used to bug me until I found the right strings.

Loving this cover right now (with my buddy Rick on the harp!):

Were both bassists at heart so we split writing duties, the songs the drummer writes are mostly in standard. I enjoy drop tuning for the droning note aspect. So far our only song in drop C is Divine sphere, were planning a follow up part 2 to Divine Sphere which will also be in drop.

Everything Hex Volt is drop C. We started out at least 50% / 50% D-standard and Drop-C, but eventually all the D-standard songs got dropped or transitioned to Drop-C. The drop tuning makes it easier to do the root - (skip) - octave - octave+fifth clawhammer powerchord thing that is my bread and butter. How I get by without one of them skinny-stringers :)

Droning thing I can understand, that's why I dig the dadgad.

So like you play 1st 3rd 4th strings and skip the "A" string? Are you playing a 5 string? I think I get it but then I may be reading two techniques as one, or I'm dumb. OR BOTH?!

Most of the time I'm in E or Eb standard. But I have fondness for playing the T-bird in C# standard.

In negotiations for the EB-3. It might be a bit of a dog in need of some restoration, but it's been a dream to have one since I started playing and listening to Cream. I NEED TO LET MY INNER BRUCE OUT.

More playing with both tonight. Also heat gun/razor scrapped my ugly joyo tremolo. Now to refinish or just sand smooth and leave blank like the grey spec and blue beard.

Well. Looks like hipshot is out. Replacement tuner through All Parts is $35, so $42 shipped, nah. Need to whittle on a washer that is gone with a file and or Dremel. The button head M4 stainless screws will fix this for $1.54.

I only use EADG and BEAD. Drop tunings screw up my arpeggiating and I'm too dumb to relearn the fretboard.

Neurosis tunes to different things. Scott Kelly as I recall is normally in regular drop D, while Steve Von Till is normally in dadgad. On some songs both drop the lowest string to A so it's Aadgbe and Aadgad. "Through Silver in Blood" is with the low A, while "Locust Star" is not.
