Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

image.jpeg

One of the chefs I work with tipped me off to what is probably the best seafood store in St. Louis. This morning I went and picked up some sashimi grade Yellowfin tuna and Scottish salmon. I'm going to make a Hawaiian treat for dinner tonight, poke bowls. I'm a seafood lover and could basically give up beef, chicken and pork(except bacon) and lead a pescatarian lifestyle if I lived near an ocean, so needless to say I am way too excited about this.

Has anyone seen the new Mr. Black Fwonkbeta?

I haven't owned an envelope filter for a while and am trying to stay away from pedal buying right now but gat dayum if this hasn't struck me with insta-gas, and HARD.

I'll probably buy one after next paycheck before the sale ends.

I've tried lots of filters, and as a rule of thumb I found that for bass, a filter without a master volume control is very limited. That is true for any other modulation/delay/phase type effects. if you want it to be heard you really need to be able to boost the volume.

Having said that, this sounds great, but check out the VFE mini Mu. I love mine and it has a volume control.

I guess by volume control you are referring to a sort of boost? I can see the benefit of that. My concern would be for my speakers/amps. With filters and mod effects I notice that the sweeps send HUGE lows and highs. When I am driving my amps and speakers hard already, I get worried about blowing **** up with it. My Shepard's End for example has no noticeable volume loss at all. It truly maintains what you put into it. On the other hand my old MXR BEF did have a slight volume drop that I usually compensated with a fairly boosted drive or fuzz into the pedals front end.

I'll check out the VFE with as open mind as possible, though admittedly I really think that Jack DeVille is making some of the best reverb and modulation effects on the market so I am somewhat sold on it already. I haven't heard a Mr. Black designed pedal that didn't have me gassing hard.

Looks like good cuts! I would be at a loss if I couldnt get sushi grade fish from work. We have it flown in daily. Always kills me a little when someone wants a tuna steak well done.

This place certainly had everything except maybe the lobster and some cheaper fish cuts flown in daily. Hell maybe even the cheaper cuts are daily. I was VERY impressed. The grouper was also calling to me.

I hate people. If you can't taste it why waste it?

I preemptively put a side of tarter on those plates, and make sure they have bread. Fuq your tuna salad sandwich...

I love grouper, red snapper, and halibut too. We work with a great vendor that gets us seasonal stuff super fresh. The lobsters can hang out a few days if they are alive.

Yeah, that weirdo Nobels flanger I bought from Squanch a while back has a volume/boost knob. SO helpful, dial it in for a slight boost and instead of dropping out when the phaser is kicked on, I'm suddenly louder and more present in the mix. Such a simple idea that no one seems to get.

hahaha!
How are you supposed to eat it? Raw? .

Pretty much, light sear on the outside, raw in the middle. SO good.

I love good seafood but don't want to pay the premium to get fresh stuff in the midwest so we don't eat it a whole lot. But when I travel for work to one of the coasts, you bet your ass I'm having a vendor take me to a nice seafood place.

Edited to add: When in doubt about the best level of done-ness (ie rare, vs medium, etc) at any place half worth it's salt just ask the server what Chef recommends. Unless you're squeamish about eating less-than-well-done food, then order it however you like. You may end up with a slightly lesser cut of meat/fish if you do that, though.

Don't think I've been anywhere and ordered a Tuna steak.
The fanciest I get is a steak house or sushi occasionally.

I sear that fuqer at a bajillion degrees, extra rare. Sliced if you prefer. Right now our prep on it is "Everything crust" seared, served with a little lemon Dijon.

The best tuna steak i ever had was at Bonefish.
Don't know If they still have the dish but it's a "loin"style cut of tuna that is rolled in sesame seeds and then seared. Then sliced thin. You get this infinitesimal layer around the outside cooked and the bulk of the inside is still cold. All that coated in charred sesame.
Kicks ass.

I agree, I had to add a vol knob to my HBE Psilocybe Phaser. It was really quiet without any dirt in front of it but huge vol boost with dirt into it. So much more useful now.

We have been serving an appetizer like that for years. Take the loin and marinate it in soy and wasabi, roll it in seeds, and freeze it. Sear it on the grill, then put it back in the freezer and slice it like carpaccio.

I did the same with by Psilocybe. Not using the pedal these days because the Tap-a-Phase has replaced it. for live application i need the tap tempo, and the speed up/slow down features of the Cusack. For studio though i prefer the sound of the HBE.
