Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Congrats and good luck on the date Julian!

I didn't realize The Budos Band made an album with metal tones added in to their usual Afro-Cuban Jonny Quest cartoon sounds.. Old news, 2014, but fun for me to stumble on it since I already dug their earlier records.

This is just enough like a lot of music I've been listening to lately and just different enough that I really love it.

Mass Driver made it to round 2! Now we're going against a band that we've played with (and crushed) a few months ago.

I totally forgot about them until our guitar player reminded me that they were the band that had the hot merch girl. (She was like 18 and try as I might...she wasn't buying what I was selling)

So I would appreciate all of the votes that we can get. Here's the link

Good news: Peavey Booster passes signal. Tested it out the other day, didn't even need a fuzz pedal, just used the EB-3 and cranked the volume. Dunno if the VU meter works though, it could be in the input was just too low to get it to move. Dunno what the price would be as is, I've seen ones in eh condition in completed listings at the upper $200 range, but I have no experience with Peavey gear.

Not so good news: looks like I have some microphonic tubes in the 1200s. Can hear pins when I flick the knobs. Did a quick pencil tap test, looks like it might be the power valves. Great. However, since it's still functional and not yet squealing, I think I'm going to get tubes for the older 2000s first. I might also pickup a weber Bias-Rite so I can just do it myself. I'm debating between the Tung-Sol 6550s (which I know and like) or some Valve Art KT88s. Or maybe even these tubes called Psvane. It looks like they're an offshoot of Shuguang, which I've heard good things about, and after ready the audiophile reviews of the Psvane, it seems they're pretty well liked. Dunno though, I'm just looking for later breakup. Any thoughts on valves or biasing amps from you guys?

I just get Sovteks.

Sovteks are what have gone microphonic in the 1200s I believe, and I also had them go microphonic in my old Bassman 300. So for me at least they're not currently being considered.
Interesting. They survived three years getting slammed all the time in a doom band in my head. Too bad about yours going microphonic. Maybe their 6L6s are better than their 6550s.

just browsing some peavey, godin, and carvin affordable used 5 strings today online, trying to stay away from the g&ls and gibsons to see if i find something that'll be different from what i usually am drawn to, played a less expensive ibanez sr205 earlier, seemed kinda narrow at the nut and real flat front to back, didn't plug it in though, cause i didn't have much parking meter time left

Already regretting selling my Mesa Titan. Lots of features I didn't need, useless for upright, but dang did it sound good on electric. Was torn between selling that or my M9, but the M9 works for upright in a pinch. Both were just a backup to my Reiner 6SL7 anyway, but those Titans are really something.

Anybody have really nosy landlords?
Seems like my landlord does an "inspection" almost quarterly. Getting to be really invasive. I get so anxious about it every time even if it is short and pointless. Can't stand people in my house. Been leaving the house whenever it happens so i don't start an argument.
I know all renters have to go through this but before this we were homeowners for almost a decade. Hard to not have a sense of "place". Wife says I am too territorial.
Suppose she its right but still can't wait to get out of here.
Though i doubt I'll be able to talk her into moving; her and my daughter really love this place.

Think I'm done kvetching now.

Never once had a landlord check up on my place unless he needed to fix something. Even had one forget to pick up rent for a month since he wouldn't give us an address and he never set up drop off box like he said he would. He thought he just lost it, and was going to leave it at that. Could have gotten out of paying a month's rent! Maybe I'm just lucky.

My senior year of undergrad we had a flophouse with 3-7 residents in a house zoned for single family; we got hassled by the city quarterly though the LL didn't care (the checks cleared).

Once. My junior year of college. shag those landlords. Stole our deposit.

My currently landlord has never done an inspection. The one I had my senior years of college never did an inspection, but was really easy to reach and took care of it immediately when the fridge broke (turned out she kept a spare one in storage for just that purpose).

I have lived in the same apartment for almost 5 years. I have spoken to my landlord four times in that time frame.

  1. To confirm that my lease was up after a year and month to month was fine.
  2. Came in to repaint, more on that.
  3. Bees nest in the attic that he had to remove.
  4. Raised my rent $50 a month after 4 years.
Other than that, he doesnt show up when I am home, and it is only to take care of the yard/snow/grass. He never goes in to my apartment after our one altercation shortly after moving in. He needed to repaint the bathroom, and I told him to call me before he showed up and reminded him that he had to legally give me notice 48 hours before keying in to my place. He didnt call, and showed up unannounced. So happens it was to me still half asleep, but still holding my Beretta becasue I thought I was getting robbed. Hardly see him now.
