Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Our last landlord has serious boundary issues, he and his wife lived upstairs so I guess they thought that they could come in whenever they wanted to. Also, not showing up at pre-appointed times. Came home one day to find a new shower head that we hadn't asked for, nor given approval for entry. Spoke to his wife (who is a lawyer) and reminded her about the 48 hour notice and that he was illegally trespassing. That particular incident was the straw that broke the camel's back and I started looking for new places. Found our current place six blocks away, way bigger, full house, landlords are nice and responsive when we need something, leave us the hell alone when we don't. It's great.

Yeah. I'm not sure I want to bite. He wants a T40, but I probably wouldn't let mine go for anything he would consider.
If you traded a T40 for the chinabacker, I would consider you to be a victim of robbery.

Ugh, that's ridiculous. The old landlord I mean.

Black Chinabacker for $325.... tempting.
It won't sound like a real one or the Ibanez/Greco copies. The bridge pickup is in a different spot.

Good news: Peavey Booster passes signal. Tested it out the other day, didn't even need a fuzz pedal, just used the EB-3 and cranked the volume. Dunno if the VU meter works though, it could be in the input was just too low to get it to move. Dunno what the price would be as is, I've seen ones in eh condition in completed listings at the upper $200 range, but I have no experience with Peavey gear.

Not so good news: looks like I have some microphonic tubes in the 1200s. Can hear pins when I flick the knobs. Did a quick pencil tap test, looks like it might be the power valves. Great. However, since it's still functional and not yet squealing, I think I'm going to get tubes for the older 2000s first. I might also pickup a weber Bias-Rite so I can just do it myself. I'm debating between the Tung-Sol 6550s (which I know and like) or some Valve Art KT88s. Or maybe even these tubes called Psvane. It looks like they're an offshoot of Shuguang, which I've heard good things about, and after ready the audiophile reviews of the Psvane, it seems they're pretty well liked. Dunno though, I'm just looking for later breakup. Any thoughts on valves or biasing amps from you guys?

the signal was probably too low to really move the VU Meter. id just get JJ if you go KT88

Interesting. They survived three years getting slammed all the time in a doom band in my head. Too bad about yours going microphonic. Maybe their 6L6s are better than their 6550s.

I love my sovtek 6L6s in my mace. Probably gonna buy another quad of them to put in the 3120.

Anybody have really nosy landlords?
Seems like my landlord does an "inspection" almost quarterly. Getting to be really invasive. I get so anxious about it every time even if it is short and pointless. Can't stand people in my house. Been leaving the house whenever it happens so i don't start an argument.
I know all renters have to go through this but before this we were homeowners for almost a decade. Hard to not have a sense of "place". Wife says I am too territorial.
Suppose she its right but still can't wait to get out of here.
Though i doubt I'll be able to talk her into moving; her and my daughter really love this place.

Think I'm done kvetching now.

my landlord is a 30some year old forever alone lady thats absolutlely cray cray with the most awkward creepy father...its not that bad but they clearly arent fit to be landlords and should have bought a house and not a duplex.

Welp I just impulsed this civil war muff clone. The Reagan Fuzz...

Global series is boobies. A touch scooped but ballzie.
I share this love.

A touch scooped is right! The guitar player on my main gig plays a Tele pretty bright. That little scoop could help in keeping me from stepping on his musical toes, if that makes sense. I'll know more after a gig or three

The scoop is interesting. Seems to be enough to make you sound bigger but not enough to disappear in the mix.
Course everybody's mix is different.

Tastes good to me.

Recently I A/Bed it with my 215s using the 2000s with same settings. All other variables controlled, the 215s is much louder and deeper. The dually can obviously take all of the power that the 2000s can dish out including fuzz but I am nervous about pushing those K140s with fuzz beyond the 2000s clean power. The dually has a more high end and a clearer midrange, but even with the bass dimed and bass boost engaged on the amp it still moves less air and has less lows than the 215s. As the 2000s goes up in volume, the 215s maintains a fairly even frequency response maintaining all of its low end and moving more and more air. The dually gets marginally louder which I attribute to the added highs and detailed mids, but the lowend bottoms out fairly quickly.

I emailed the builder with a lengthy diatribe detailed all of the tests I have done and my experiences using it in a band scenario. Hopefully the solution is something easy such as adjusting the port length. Crossing my fingers that I will not have to ship it halfway across the country, but I guess I'll do what I have to do.

I really love the sound of the cab at low, personal practice volumes. In a band setting though I don't see it getting used much at all. I want to love it for those situations as well.
