Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Well, just finished writing and recording lyrics for a song my group has been working on. Weird hearing myself sing, especially since I don't consider myself a singer at all. Guitarist said he likes it, but not the style he had in mind. Not that he wants me to change it or anything, as I'm not exactly versatile. Looks like I may be the singer until we can find a permanent one. At least on recordings. Really gonna have to bone up on my bass skills if I have to sing and play. Gonna have to start posting stuff soon.

Anyway, I'm off Friday. Been off all week for Spring Break.

Winters back today with a snotty mix of rain, ice, and snow. glad I have a nice dry heated basement to work in, cause Im installing the dang thing!!!

Work tomorrow and monday and got no vaca days for the first year of employment at this place and only 5 days after that until 5 years, in which you bump up to 10 days...WOOOOOOOO. Its seriously depressing to think about that, ive been treading lightly and waiting to ask about taking days off unpaid/how flexible they are like that. I have a life and other interests besides work...

man i don't know how you guys survive like that. I get 25 paid vacation days and unlimited sick days + all the stat holidays (we have a stat holiday in every month almost). i'd go crazy working that much...

also new Church of Misery is pretty meh...a little too predictable for me.

****ing Canada... You beautiful *****, you.

At my last job I had banked up 5 weeks of PTO over the course of 4 years. Only got 80 hours a year off for sick pay or vacation time. Trouble was I could never use it, I was too low on the pecking order. Current job I have a bit more PTO but I have non negotiable dates every single week for the rest of the year. So while I may take a day off here and there, nothing like a vacation happens.

I just get Sunday off

Honestly, with the restaurant job, this is the only day off I get. Except if it is Easter/Mothers day/Valentines day/a big concert night/or for any other reason the owner wants to be open. At least when I work 7 days a week there I pick up some OT.

I get 5 vacation days currently. In another year, that will get bumped up to 10. Outside of Thanksgiving and Christmas I can usually take my vacation days however I please. Including linking up my weekly days off. Hell with enough notice I could probably even scoot out of Thanksgiving and Christmas. I don't technically get sick days or at least not a defined quantity that I am aware of. I am pretty much golden whenever I am sick though without much issue. If I abused that it would become a problem but I am rarely sick enough to skip work and I actually like working a lot as long as I get at least some decompression time. By the end of my two days off I am itching to get back to work so I have something to do.

Apparently this was established last year with one of our first 20 year employees, but at that benchmark we get 15 days of PTO. WOOOOOOO NELLY!

If I stay here a few more years, I will easily get in to the 35-40 days off a year. But that is a big IF.

Hmmmm. I have a little bit of extra cash to spend at the moment. I was set on ordering a pair of Deltas, but I also need to retube my 2000s and get a grounded plug on it. I get shocked if I touch the frame of my pedal board and both the board and the amp are plugged in to the same surge protecter.

Amp maintenance is a necessity but not really an immediate issue as the dangers are easily circumvented and the current tubes, though mismatched, are still functioning fine. I was holding out for a set of Gold Lions but they are soo damn expensive. Well, really all KT88s are pretty pricey beyond JJs and EHX. Anyway while investigating some other tube options I found NIB Gold Lion matched quads for $175 shipped on ebay. Now I am torn.

Four Quad Factory Platinum Matched Genalex Gold Lion KT88 KT-88 Tubes NEW

Start building my wall of 215s by making the currently useless wall 50% less useless, or maintain my damn amp. What say you collective?

Second question. What is the normal bench fee for a retube and bias if I'm supplying tubes? I know it varies based on the amp. One place I just called quoted me at $120-150 and that sounds a bit high but then again I'm pretty unaware.

I get two weeks a year and always take one of them for our wedding anniversary week. I don't get official sick days, but I'm self employed in practice if not on paper, so I take sick days when I'm too sick to work. Unfortunately I'm raised by blue collar WASPs, so usually I only take sick days if I'm puking or can't get off the toilet.

I keep seeing people online saying they have Good Friday off. Not me, I'm going to be driving all day. I hope there's not a lot of traffic. Time to start stockpiling podcasts.
What? That's weird. That they get good friday off.

Question to those in the know.

Just how 2R stable is a V4B? What I mean is, I understand it has a tap and that it can be run at 2R. I also have heard that some amps struggle with 2R even though they have that rating. Will 2R put a serious strain on an old V4B or should it be safe. Thinking of using the two peavey 215s when I get them "deltaed" and possibly the 2000s into the dually for a massive 615 stack.

I could also just get delta 15bs and wire the peaveys to 8ohm loads. I'd like to cut into the back of the cabs and install either a 1/4":speakon jack plate or dual speakon so that I could run my Prolite into all 3 215s.
You mean 2ohms? I would think that if there is a tap, it's safe. Old Ampegs are pretty overbuilt, too.

My boss wouldnt give me the day off when Lemmy died... I see no reason for the rest of these people to have the day off for their god.
Amen.

My amp repair, including a full retube (I apparently managed to blow out all of them, completely; the amp tech sounded surprised when he left the message at how thorough the destruction was), and several other internal repairs, is apparently $195. That includes the cost of the tubes and other parts, though.

"R" is a unit for an ohm.

I called around to all of the primary repair techs in St. Louis and it seems the best deal I could shake for a retube, bias and power plug is like $120-140. That's with me supplying tubes and the tech was very clear that they only warranty their work if I buy tubes from them. The Midwest is full of hustlers.

Which is far beyond the norm unless you 1. have cushy union job (probably government given you're in Ottawa) or 2. been with the same company for a very long time. Same thing in the States.

Easter is a major statutory holiday in the States too. Major banks and stock markets are closed, for example.

Wow. That's just for a retube, no other repair work? $120-$140 plus the cost of the tubes? What a bunch of ********.

That's how I feel. Maybe there would be a discount if I bought tubes from them as well, but at that point it's still as much as the gold lions plus a fair retube price.

St. Louis apparently sucks for amp service. If it wasn't such a rare head I'd take a stab at it. Buying the proper equipment is still cheaper than having them do it on top of tube cost.

I bought the gold lions. I'm excited.

So with the cost of the tubes, it's what?
