Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Went fishing, had a couple of bites, but no fish...oh well off to IC for riffage.

If you're staying in IC tonight, head north outta town to Sutliff bridge tomorrow before you drive home for a chill spot to crack a brew and drop a line.
It's an old road bridge, bypassed by a much newer concrete bridge for the actual road. The locals bought the old bridge and maintain it. There's a general store/bar & grill at one end, the whole old bridge now basically functions as a big patio for the bar & grille. Good hangs.

That's the same issue I have with a lot of sludge bands, just seems like people are going through the motions. I try to be open to as much music as I can but sometimes the substance just isn't there. It's something I'm constantly aware of in the music that I play, it's a tricky a line to walk between influence and uninspired imitation.
That's part of why if a song just kinda goes off in a weird direction, we embrace it and just go with it. We don't want to sound generic, but we also don't want to be try-hards.

Played a show with Badr Vogu, Body Void, and Chrch tonight. And actually every band sounded pretty different.

Used the Crayon at band practice last night, took a bit to get get it dialed in but once I did - holy balls it sounded massive! It's nice to have that awesome gritty/dirty od sound, but with a bass boost. Clarity and definition was still there, but Jesus the tone was shaging ridiculous.

It didn't replace the fuzz pedal, still used that on some of the older songs, but as a medium gain ballsy od it excels.

Edit; apparently "f*cking" gets auto corrected to "shaging" now. They could have at least spelled the word right. Makes me sound like a poorly educated Brit.

Do you like the Crayon better than the Pork Loin?

Speaking of Pork Loin, anybody here use the Pork Loin (JohnK mod) and the Darkglass VMT? Always wanted to try the VMT, but the Pork Loin works great as well. It would replace the PL in theory. Does the VMT do the PL's heavy OD doominess? Or should I just be happy with my current rig as I have no need for a new pedal? (Yeah, right.)

It's different than the Pork Loin (never did use the PL extensively at a band practice so it's hard to compare). The PL is definitely darker, and is less aggressive / more smooth sounding than the Crayon. I think the Crayon has more low end output than the PL. The EHX is more Lemmy/Rob Wright grind/grit while the PL is a bit more refined sounding than that. The EHX is way brighter, I had to back the treble knob way down to get it to a spot where I was happy with it.

I guess long story short, they're both excellent but very different. If I have time this week maybe I'll record some clips of the Crayon.

Ill have to remember this for next time we play Iowa...im sure we will...Dick Boots Rager 5 is scheduled for September I hear...

Got 11 drum tracks done in a marathon recording session down at Heavycraft HQ. Long but productive day!

@mc_muench How did things go in IC?

Went great! Decent turn out for a non school time sunday night in a college town. Every band kicked arse. Telekinectic Yeti is soooooooo on another level its not fair. Kicked GH down a notch, in a good way. We got stuff to work on.

I'm intrigued but won't order for a while even if it means total opportunity loss. Big Game makes some ridiculously cool dirt pedals. I'm holding out for the release of the Headhunter Bee Baa clone.

Speaking of Pedals. My last two,the Green Russian and Rat continue to blow my mind. I've been using the ODB3 as an always on low gain preamp so to speak, running it first in the chain. It really brings the low end forward in the sound even through pedals that cut a bit of bass. The GR sounds killer. I swapped Q4 for another tranny and unknowingly installed it backwards per it's data sheet. I was blown away by the sound. When I realized the mistake I flipped it to proper orientation and was pretty disappointed. Sounded like a blanket over the cab. Flipped it back and haven't looked back. It does a very cool crunchy muff tone with the gain from 0 to noon. At about 2 o clock and up it gets into synth fuzz really quickly with multiple octave tones becoming more present. When I play an open C and the 7th fret octave on the next string it sounds like a guitar is playing with me. Just awesome. My Iron fist has more low end, but it's loose sub low low end. The GR has plenty of lows but they are substantially tighter. It will outlive the IF.

The rat is also super cool. It is very easy for me to dial in classic rat, light-moderate OD, distortion and even into bass heavy fuzz. I really just want to send these to some of you guys for a trial and second opinion. Maybe I'm wrong or disillusioned by my own pride but these pedals are very very good sounding. Better than a lot I've tried.

I got the Bernie box the other night and met Ryan of Unicorn Yak. Cool dude, incredible artist.

He will be laser etching a couple other boxes for me with the following art: a picture of Madame Blanche Monnier, the 25 year prisoner in her own bedroom, and a drawing of a skull that my girlfriend drew. I'm very excited about both.

In other news, some dildo on Facebook got his panties in a bunch because I mentioned Gibsons shite QC. He told me I had never nor will ever own a Gibson and to keep playing my crap. LOL.

Also headed to the airport after work for vacation in CO. Headed to Breckenridge.

I had a similar experience when I disparaged fender 5 string necks. Was told that my statements are what people that could never afford a Fender american deluxe 5 string would say, and that I should go play my no name gear. Had a good chuckle at that.

I told him to remember that for every one of him, there are thousands of other guitarists with more talent, who are less douchy and have better gear.

Statements like his are what people say when they could only afford a MIA 5 deluxe and have some kind of superiority complex because they could swing a $1500 bass.
