Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

NAD. 1971 "Blueline" Ampeg SVT. The Chicken head knobs weer ditched before I even turned it on, in favor for some very KVLT, OG tuxedo PVY knobs.

Now...holy shvt. This amp is no joke. SICKENINGLY LOUD through the 810TX amd folded 18, and thats with the setting pictured. Eats pedals for breakfest, lunch, and dinner, they have never sounded as good as now. Finally the headroom I need. This amp is on next level, cant be beat, holy grail status. It is THE bass amp of bass amps.

Congrats Max. Big tubes big tones. The headroom is real. I'm actually pretty confident I could easily blow my duallies with the CL400. I'm not sure what two cabs could handle 300-400w without being pushed to their absolute max tolerance.

I've had my verellen cranked through a single Dually and didn't blow it. But I run a fairly obnoxious tone, maybe if you have alot of boosted lows. Sometimes if I use the megalith for an extended period of time I get a glue like smell from it, but have yet to explode it. Not for lack of trying though.

I haven't run Mr. Grumpy into my Dually that much. The Faitals have kind of a 70's EV vibe to them, really clear and lots of high end, which goes better with my GK MB800 that has a pretty wooly tone. Mr. Grumpy is actually super hi-fi, unless I really crank the preamp, so it sounds better through the sealed 810, which rolls off a lot of highs. I have yet to dime that amp into ANYTHING yet though, it's earth shaking at like half volume and I made sure Nick designed and built it to have a really gradual volume increase across the dial. I didn't want it to be another tube amp that goes...inaudible >crackle< 85% of full volume. When I made the youtube video I did for it, I the volume loud enough to play with a drummer at 10 o'clock and any louder and it would rattle my camera away and blows out the microphone.

I always have a fDeck in my signal chain, so that helps a lot.

As do I. With the low cut disengaged on the cl400 and low set at like 4 or 5 I am moving a ton of air. This is with the gain on like 4 or 5 and the master controls around 6. Mids on 8 or 9 and treble on 6 or 7.

With my pedals it is grindy and clear but with huge bottom. Like I said, the speakers are jumping. Id be concerned about pushing lows or volume much further.

Has anyone ever accused you enough of not caring, that you just don't care anymore?

Seeing this girl and no matter what days im free, she always picks a day I'm busy then when I say as much she gets mad and claims I don't care care...

Well then the only way to prove I care is to do what she says... This pattern infuriates me and yes now I'm really starting to not care

When I think a tube amp would be killer I run into these discussions. 300W wicked loud lots of headroom, 100w too wimpy will never stand out with a loud band.
Some of that is the cab they are mated with.
My JBL 215 GK RB400 was a badass rig in it's day. Need to get another RB400

Now pushing preamp into solid state amp only really for ease moving.
I've never owned a tube head. Wanna try but need to play more to decide what will work for me.

I'm never blowing full chooch. Usually master is 1/3 at the most. Power amp is pegged to get all it has when needed.
With a 100W Tube head I could surely match my current volume and let it breath a little. 300W and I'd be blowing the doors off the place.

Fender keeps waving at me with the SB300 and T100.
Ampeg has the CL and V4B.
Mesa
Verellen
Ect ect ect....
So many options.

Do we really need 300w to keep up with the band?

My amp is 180 watts and I'm often the loudest person in the band. So no. I could probably do Catapult gigs with a V4B.

That's all up to you and your band. I couldn't get by with a 100w tube head. The closest I got to meeting volume needs with SS was a 4pro with a cab on each amp, ~600w a piece.

Also, if you are going to haul the weight of a 100w tube amp, you may as well get a 300w. They aren't that much heavier or expensive and you can always turn down.

100-120 watt tube heads should be plenty loud with a decent cab for most peoples bands. But dont expect crystal clean tone though, itll be a bit hairy and dirty. My 100ish watt SS heads are about as loud as my 100ish watt tube heads. My Booster is/was easily the loudest thing in the room when running 3/4s at 2 ohms.
But I can honestly say now though, 300 tube watts is a monster. Like next level loud. Made my guitatist feel sick loud. Which honestly is that much louder but its WAYYYYYY more powerful in the feeling it department. Like ill be runnung it at like 2-3, maybe 4 for shows, for the most part while running 2 cabs.

I'm in for a little grit. I need dirty all the time anyway.
An interesting thing happened last time we practiced.

I forgot to charge Volto on the mini board. So in the middle of the first song my signal dies. Realize the issue, plus I didn't have the charger in the bag. Double DOH!

So I unplugged the board and cranked up the drive on the VTRM preamp and plugged in direct. I needed to turn the master down more because now there was way more clarity.
No more mush mouth signal going in to process.
Got me thinking... and I'm going to try today. Run the board thru the effects loop and keep some drive on the pre dialed in.
Well see. Not a whole lot of time for experimentation in these sessions. I may just bring the rack home and mess with it.

So yeah if I went Tube it would probably be baby steps. 100w first then if needed go 300w later.
I wanna go big on this but my practical side takes hold. "Do I really need it" probably not.

Was just looking at the GK lineup again. Kills me headquarters are literally a 10 min drive from my house. Be nice if I could go over there and play with some combinations.
Again I have to start thinking like a back packing trip. Every ounce counts. No more truck to load gear into is a kick in the ass.
