so I ordered the peavy cvlt f800b preamp pedal that john from electronicaudioexperiments built a one off of...
I also have the smaller dunwich wizard on the way,
I srsly have wayyy too many dirt pedals.

So last week I went with a friend to try his gear and some more gear, to find out more about tone adaptability of my Thunderbird.
Tried the Ampeg SVT-7, a 810 Ampeg cab(made in China), a 215 Bassman cab(i think) by Fender and some basses, the G&L tribute with HBs, a Rickenbacker 4001, no-name P-bass and my Thunderbird.

I must say all the other basses killed the TB in terms of tonal flexibility, best to me was of course the Rick.
Regarding cabs, I liked the bottom from the 215 cab, while the 810 was almost twice louder it had a more punchy sound which is good for slapping i think.
To be honest I felt like I have to completely change my gear, get another bass with more "cling" in it, and get me another head and cab... on the way home I had these plans on buying a SVT-CL, a 215 cab and a P-bass which would cost me A LOT.

But then I went to my band's practice room and switched on my gear.

And I was blown away on how good it sounded compared to what I heard during my comparison.
I have a Peavey Tour700 head and a TVX410 cab, this combo destroyed the Ampeg and all those sounds I was trying to get out of it.
My low expense rig(along with a cheap guitar amp booster) is staying put, it works damn well for what I need now.

Maybe the only thing I'd add is a Fender/Squier Jaguar bass, they sell them at a ridiculous price of 240€, and the bass seems well made and good sounding.

I figured you guys are probably something of an authority on fuzz, so here I am...

I'm getting a payrise next month so I'm searching for an upgrade over my venerable Deluxe Bass Muff. It's served me well for many years, taking beer, vomit, some blood and illicit substances in its stride, but it's starting to fall apart. So what's your recommendations for the fattest, doomiest fuzzes out there? Budget of say, £200 absolute max? I'm not really bothered about versatility or clean blends or poopie like that, just crushing heaviness.

i had the baby thunder and it was pretty good. very close to the bluebeard so i did not feel the need to keep both.

thats another really really good fuzz.
I remember liking the wren and cuff pickle pie B quite a bit, but it wasn't a fan of the active basses I was using at the time

I really like the pickle, although I am a huge muff fan. I currently use a muff, but I also use a tech21 fuzz/boost. Goes all over the spectrum from fizz to full on fuzz and the boost is awesome. The only downside to it is I still prefer my muff.

I really like the sounds I've heard from the EQD Park Fuzz and Erupter. Never tried them, but heard em in person and they can be massive.

Those jags are pretty sweet and they can get the p bass sound too.

The Carcosa is dirt cheap and covers lots of ground. You can wiggle the dials to find a suitable Muff replacement, or well, to my ears I could and did.

I wanted a Bluebeard. I contacted the Bluebeard guy. He said "I'm gonna make 'em again, soon! Send me an email!" That was probably almost two years ago. I keep telling myself to just buy a GGG-Tuned Muff which is, from what everyone says, almost the same thing.

Any reason two DOD Death Metals from different eras would sound very different? I have an old American one, and a "new" Chinese one. The new one is much brighter, less bassy, not as loud, and seems tighter and less compressed. The old one is bassier, looser, and louder. I can get them to sound close, but the new one requires much more extreme settings, whereas the old one has more moderate settings to achieve my tone. Just never had "identical" pedals require such different settings for similar tones, so I got to wondering.

Anybody know if they changed the circuit, or is it just typical component variance and aging?

I dont have an answer for you but I must ask, Is the DOD Death Metal designed for use with bass?. I see them in my local ads very often but never for bass. I never use a guitar specific pedal for bass as they suck the bottom end right out but if your DOD is for guitar and it makes you happy using it for bass than you have got me curious.

could be either the circuit changed or component variance. you'd have to open them up and take a look.

I wouldn't even know how to tell. Even if there were significant layout changes, I couldn't tell the difference between simply changing where components were placed vs. completely different components.

I dont have an answer for you but I must ask, Is the DOD Death Metal designed for use with bass?. I see them in my local ads very often but never for bass. I never use a guitar specific pedal for bass as they suck the bottom end right out but if your DOD is for guitar and it makes you happy using it for bass than you have got me curious.

It claims to work well for both, but I vastly prefer it on guitar. I just figured you guys know effects better than most, so I asked. Try it though, you never know if you'll like it. I try every effect I have on guitar and bass, and have found some cool tones that way.
