Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Any recommendations for a low gain Rat? I don't want anything with fizz, as that's why I got rid of the Blower Box. I tried out a cheap mini Rat clone on bass today, and it gave me the itch for a better one.

For clarification's sake, by low gain I mean LOW gain. The clone's gain was only at 9 when I got the tones I liked. Anything more and it got too trebly too quick.

Maybe an OCD clone like the Fuzzrocious The demon can do the trick.

rat and low gain don't go together.

if you can find a barber LTD SR or HBE hematoma, those do low gain well. the new blueberry or a demon could work too.

Finished up the shallow Peavey 215 cab upgrade. Put a bead of silicone on the inner joints, lined the back with some acoustic foam, made some custom ports, new wiring and put in two Faital 15PR400's. I think I'll make a new grill, the original is kinda tweaked. And then I should probably clean it. Every amp/cab on craigslist seems to be pre-blasted with cat piss.

Sounds killer, and turned out to be pretty inexpensive all said and done.

Not exactly a rat sound but might get you ballpark what you're looking for, but an HM-2 with the gain not dimed maybe? Or a Tech 21 Bass XXL might do it for you? Not Rat circuits obviously but might be what you're looking for.

The Dunwich volt thrower has a pretty good amount of sweep on the gain knob as well as a no clipping diode mode that turns it into more of a clean boost overdrive kind of situation.

So far so good, I found a used one for cheap and new one for not much more, so for the money I'm satisfied. I cranked them for a second to check for enclosure rattles, but will give it the beans at next rehearsal.

turning into a pic whore here

Here, let me help you out with that:
"No one needs a 2x15! It's all about 4x6" neo cabs now!"
"Class D heads are vastly superior, when you grow up you'll ditch that giant tube amp!"
"Punch and clarity!"
"I only use DI and IEMs!"
"(Satori gets banned)"
Pretty accurate, lol.

Smh

We were talking about this the other day.

Do you consider Led Zeppelin a METAL band?

My stance - nope, and they never were.
**** no.

I thought everyone knew that Sabbath was the first metal band.

But how many other groups did that as well? To me, Sabbath is the first metal band. Many earlier groups contributed to its creation, but Sabbath embodied it. There were plenty of other driving bass and drum parts, and also lots of distortion before Zep. But The Who aren't considered metal. Nor is Deep Purple, Hendrix, or Cream. But they all have influenced metal quite a bit.

Metal owes a great deal to Zep, but they also owe a great deal to classical composers. No one says Bach is metal.

I'm not trying to bash Zep by any means, as they have earned their spot in rock history. But it seems we're trying to put them where they don't belong, and I don't think that's how they identify either.

Anyway, my two cents.
My opinion exactly.

I don't know what it is, but Sabbath just had some intangible thing that made it metal, that the others lacked.

This is the only reference I have to go on otherwise but its pretty damn convincing.

That actually sounds pretty damn cool.

I'd agree with this. Do you have an example of what you're after? When I think"low gain" a rat is one of the last places my brain goes!!

If you're married to a rat, maybe a cat tail? The high and low clipping mods can help, maybe. There is some low end loss with these for sure, though. I LOVE a rat, but I'm wanting that snarl and fizz from it. For lower gain I like the Demon, too.
