Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Hey fellas, fairly regular lurker/seldom poster here but I really couldn't find the answer I was looking for in the regular forums... I'm sure this is been covered before; i'm just not finding it in my searches. My practice space has a beautiful 1972 SVT rig and I'm falling in love. I have my GK 800 R&B/Road Ready 215 rig that does the David William Simms sound brilliantly. I have used and loved the V4B and suspect that it is plenty of volume for me. With V4s going for near SVT prices I started looking at Mesa's D180 but they too are going for prices of the bigger amps. In the classifieds right now is a 400+ with case for $900. My question is: Will the 400+ bring the giggles like the SVT? I'd probably be playing it through the RR 215. P bass for that band, G&L for the other... nothing very doomy right now ... just trust the knowledge from this group...

i have owned both. the 400+ just does not have the SVT grunt. save up abd get an svt. it will be cheaper than constant tone chasing.

Hi,

I’m wondering if anyone could identify what pedals Tim Bagshaw is using in Funeralopolis in particular, I’m talking about that deep wah style growl he’s getting, it’s kicks in at 2:16 into the track at the change of riff. All I can guess is it’s an auto wah/envelope filter into fuzz. If anyone knows or has a better guess than me I’d be happy for the info.

I would be careful. It can be done, but you run the risk of wrecking it.

There's a song my band would play regularly where I would run through my 15w night train combo. It was at 3 o'clock on the gain and 1-2 o'clock on the master. Sounded so epic but I did prematurely mess up a preamp tube. I had to change it every 6 months because the vibrations would make it microphonic. The rest of the tubes and the speaker surprisingly took it well. Granted I never went below A (we we're tuned E/Eb std) and that's probably what kept it from blowing.

That 15w combo made me realize how loud tube watts can be. If you're wanting to stick as a two piece, just get and ABY and a micro pog. Then you can run both and make one hell of a wall of sound.

With some dirt you'd be surprised how good that octave up can sound and with the ABY you can do passages with bass or guitar solo'd and kick em both in to melt faces. Also since they're different octaves, I never had issues with phase. Any old cheap ABY works.

Every now and then I see a great deal that is too good to be true and the same day it sells and then reappears within 24 hours for 2 or 3 times the price it sold for. I could play that game but I refuse to. I love when the re-seller cant get rid of it for months and drops it down to just above what he paid for it just to get rid of it. Clowns!.

I'll admit right now that I'm a huge fuggin' hypocrite. I did the same thing when I bought the Acoustic rig off craigslist for nothing and basically flipped it. But what I sold it for was still a bit under what the average prices have been. I think I broke even on that Beta.

I guess I'm not on the same level as the professional flippers out there.

That's the kind of flips I do. Mostly from pawn/thrift shops or people just wanting to get rid of it at a garage sale. They're getting what they want from it, so you're not really ripping em off. I mean it's no burst Les paul.

Ooohh, I just tried one at a decent volume the other day. First time I've tried one above a whisper. Really dig it, not sure if I wanna drop the dough. Good to know they're reasonable used.
