Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

I've always loved riffs. Thick chords that make you want to bang your head or hit something. I had started listening to Iron Maiden and Queensryche, and then two of my older cousins put on Iron Man. That's like the riff. Just when I think "that's the heaviest riff ever" I hear another one.
There are some branches of the doom\stoner spectrum I can't go down. Drone, ambient, or percussive bands don't do much for me. Recordings that are too intentionally rubbish aren't fun for me either. Also, bands that are trying too hard to be from the 70s.
I'm a sucker for song structure and a good chorus.
I know why some of these bands don't get more exposure, but there are some others that really would blossom if there was a infrastructure to get them more exposure. Sadly, there just isn't interest in real, dirty rock and roll any more, just faux rock and roll that has been sanitized and glamourize for public consumption.

I'll have you know that my Lakland dooms pretty hard through my Mesa D800 and Barefaced Super Twin.
If there is one place where I differ from most here is I love my fancy pants gear I can lift with one hand and put in a small hatchback.
I don't do retro, weighty, or inconvenient.

My gear reality seems to be middle of the road (aka ubiquitous GK gear and Ibanez) amp, cab, and bass, with a mix of boutique and readily available at GC pedals.

Im also in the camp of if it sounds good then the weight doesnt matter. Somehow though i always end up with inconveniently large equipment in my pursuit of tone rather than light and convenient. Heavy equipment for heavy music for heavy times i guess.

I suppose this is more of a standard TB debate. I have on many occasions said to use the right tool for the job when Normies say that a P bass with flats is all anyone needs. That can be the right tool, but isn't always.
Along those same lines, if you are trying to sculpt something with fine details, you can't do it with a sledge hammer and a dull chisel. Unless you are splitting blocks, in which case that is what you want.
So yes, gear is a tool, but the tool is as important to the work as the plan behind the work; or the talent to make a vision a reality.

I’d agree. I have very specific tones in mind for gear, and for me a pedal is worth the “boutique” price to get there if a standard brand won’t. But there is plenty of gear I have no interest in as a result. In reality, however, as long as it works for you, who cares?

I just want to say that I really appreciate this thread and lack of Jaco in it. I've lurked on TB for a long time but the old-guy-in-an-Hawaiian-shirt factor is a tad high in the rest of TB.

This is like a angry, dirty, raw breath of fresh air... and being someone who fairly recently discovered distortion pedals, this thread realllly makes me wish I had a drummer to play with again.

Matt Pike is a stoner/doom god. Guitarist of Sleep, and mastermind/guitarist/vocals of High on Fire. So nope. Hes known for not wearing a shirt on stage. So its a bit funny that he supposedly rocks hawaiian shirts off stage

@socialleper amen dude, love the riffs. Rage and Sabbath got me to jump off the deep end into my obsession with riffs, then I found desert/stoner and it was like seeing the promised land. I dig drone, jam, solos and other spacy stuff but if that's all there is, it can get a bit dull after a few tunes.

Sick, just sick. I've been contemplating trying a quad coil and wiring it up to do just the same. If I could fit one into an L series mfd pup, I'd be in heaven...Christ those are expensive though, is it for two or a single one? Oh and love the flat black!

I work from home and was pulling 100GB or so of data from the work network, browsed the active threads... saw stoner... over 2000 pages figured I'd better give it a look. Watched The Sleeping Legion video and thought to myself "Self....... you should hang out here".. so here I am..

I've done construction work since I was 14, I know this well. Work smarter not harder, right?
I wasnt trying to imply any gear was better or worse, just the opposite.
Play what you've got without shame. Attempt to acquire gear you love, and then play that without shame.
When you find the gear that really works for you playing is easier IMO.

And to be fair to the TB normies, yeah I do love me a p bass with flats, though I don't currently have one. And my jazz bass is sunburst/tort.

But yeah, I'm a firm believer in playing whatever you want. If it works for you, it works. Period. There is a hive mind in TB for certain trends, which I don't understand. We are a bit of a tonic to that line of thinking. Plus we spend time drooling over fuzz pedals! Whats not to love!?

Somehow missed this, but I'm in the same boat. I've realized that I have specific tones in mind and I like having the ability to get all the different flavors without owning a room full of amps. Although if I had the cash a wall full of amps would be awesome.
