Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Glad to see more joining the party.



Somehow missed this, but I'm in the same boat. I've realized that I have specific tones in mind and I like having the ability to get all the different flavors without owning a room full of amps. Although if I had the cash a wall full of amps would be awesome.

I don't know how people collect amps and cabs. Pedals are easy; almost too easy. They are small and relatively cheap. Basses run the gamut price wise, but don't take up that much space. Cabs are almost by necessity big, and amps can be, as well as being fairly expensive. If I had a finished garage or basement, that would be one thing, but my den is only the size of a moderate bedroom. It has to fit my music gear, computer\recording gear, books, and CDs. My wife doesn't want to see any of that stuff; so it goes in the den. I pretty much live in one room.

I'd hate to be his guitar tech. Can you imagine how sopping wet those guitars are?

If i had more time, I'd be tempted to build my own pedals. The components are generally cheap.

OM is something I wasn't expecting to be drawn to. The interplay between Al and the drummer is great. People have knocked The Sciences, but I dig it and think Al's playing on Giza is excellent.

I wasn't into the "quieter" Om albums at first, but they've definately grown on me. I'd be hard pressed to pick between Advaitic Songs which is like Dead Can Dance with more fuzz or Variations on a Theme which is just heavy.

As for The Sciences? I loved it. The naysayers are wrong. Be happy with what you got, it's better than what you had.

(i've spent the last 18 hours revisiting NYHC of my youth and am stuck somewhere between the alternately bad ideas of 'man, maybe being straight edge was a good idea' and 'i should totally shave my head again')

I just don't have time, and it seems like the one I really wanted (the GGG muff which is the closest I'll ever get to a Blue Beard) is great, but I mean.. a DOD Carcosa or EHX Green Reissue is only $80 (and I already own one of those two), so what's the point?

Other than I want to put an OD and a muff into a single pedal because I think pedals with two switches are like two times cooler than two pedals with one each. Don't judge me.

I work from home and was pulling 100GB or so of data from the work network, browsed the active threads... saw stoner... over 2000 pages figured I'd better give it a look. Watched The Sleeping Legion video and thought to myself "Self....... you should hang out here".. so here I am..

Huge threads put more load on the servers, 10 years ago was a long time in computing performance years..... and hosting costs to get higher performance were huge..

I think it goes back to George Carlins bit about having stuff. The amount of gear I have, especially amps and cabs, remains unconsciously in proportion to my housing/rehearsal space.

The good thing is that there are tons of bands waiting to be discovered by you. The downside is there are so many that sound similar that it can be daunting or depressing.
The breakdown of the A&R\Label model is that there is a grip of bands to listen to now; there is a ton of diversity. There is also an overwhelming amount to sort through, and much of it is rubbish.
If you ever want suggestions, feel free to ask.

Heavily into Sleep and Om lately, "The Sciences" is fantastic... can't listen to stoner/doom bands if the lyrics are too negative... also a huge fan of Fu Manchu, Sasquatch, Wo Fat and Elder... other bands in the genre I've picked up on - Electric Mountain, Earthless, Silent Monolith, Five Horse Johnson, Robot Death Monkey, War Cloud, Bonehawk, Lo-Pan...

Great list! A couple that might play well to people who are new to the broad genre are Spirit Adrift and Pallbearer (first 2 albums), because of their clean vocals and general tendency to have riffs.

Im listening to them right now. I hadn't heard them yet! I saw that they were at Psycho this year, but I didnt make it. Somehow they weren't on my doomradar, which is crazy. I'm really digging it.

Oh ,also, one that newcomers should be able to get into easily: I've heard them described as beatles meet black sabbath. Not really doom, but you know, sabbath-y counts, right? Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats
