Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

i try to avoid the stuff that's too blues rock based. it was great 15 years ago but i'm just bored to death of it.

here are some bands i recommend (not all doom/stoner but all heavy in my opinion)

Whoa, this thread got bizz-ay all of a sudden, that's cool.

Still looking for a goddamn drummer. Been playing that Tele bass I built through a '70s Bassman 100 into two Schroeder 1x15's at home in the meantime. The bass channel was modded so the bass knob is now a fuzz circuit with 4 different levels. Kinda funky sounding but I haven't had much time to experiment with it. Still gotta make a vid with the DOD Gunslinger and some other pedals compared side by side.....

Hows that 70s bassman sound? They tend to get pooped on as bass heads, but my theory was that was due to the absolutely atrocious (for bass) cabs that fender paired them with.

I'm finally getting somewhere on a band. Met a cool guitarist and we have a couple interested drummers, so hopefully I'm on my way to a band. Fingers crossed.

The glory days. I miss hearing all the stories from dudes in active bands. Specially now that my bands basically starting over and havent gotten ready to play shows.

More TB gen pop jive. This one looked like it had been serviced (newer looking JJ's) and was cheap so I rolled the dice. I've only had one loudish rehearsal with it, so far no complaints, it oozes the toobz sound and was loud enough. It stays pretty clean when pushed, but I haven't pushed it to the max yet, so not sure about the doom-worthiness of it. Could definitely get the grind going, and more so with the DOD Gunslinger I've been trying out. The stereotype of them sucking for bass is unfounded once you hear them through a decent/efficient cab.

Big news, my kid was just dancing and rocking to elder and electric wizard! I think she likes it.

Same here, though she's starting to be real supportive after my daughter started to love "playing" piano (she's 1).

I got a friend with a wall of amps, but he's single, in his 40's and has a great job.

You gotta get some clips of that amp, weren't you saying that each knob introduces dirt at different frequencies?

@br1qbat congrats dude that's great to hear! And I agree with ya. I've never played one with a bass. If they sound anything like the modern ones they gotta be great.

Oh and for excellent mind opening music experience, check out stoned meadow of doom's YouTube channel. It'll get ya hooked.

Other good starters are Truckfighters, Egypt, Red Fang, and the Sword.

Anybody using a 5 string Jazz tuned to C ?. The precision gets the tone that sets the standard for my bands sound and when I owned a 4 string Jazz I could not get enough "BOOM" from it. Now that Jazz is long gone and I miss the look and feel of it. I might consider a Jazz 5 if I could only find a sound sample of one tuned to C with some dirt. Anyone rollin' that way?.

I had a 90's one in the.....'90s :eyebrow: But at that time down-tuning was not on my radar at all. Didn't keep it for long, and eventually gave up on 5 strings years later. I love the looks and playibility of a Jazz, but the sound always leaves me wanting.

Edit: I would try and find one to try out first. But if I had one, I'd remove the bridge pickup completely and put in the hottest/hairiest pickup in the other spot. One vol, one tone or do the series/parallel thing if you want more options.

I've had a couple, and the best sounding ones were 1) a '70s Matsumoku copy that I stuck MIM pickups in, 2) one of the recent '70s Fender re-issues that I stuck Lakland Chi-Sonics in (in plain Jazz housings) with a blend knob instead of 2 separate vol knobs.

While a little more fiddly, I've preferred just staying w/ 4 strings and setting them up for low tunings, finding good strings for this was a little challenging though. YMMV. One reporter's opinion.

Still using a Jazz?, What gauge string are you using?, flatwound for thump?.

@cornfarmer thanks for the video, I really dig the sound. I love the gritty, clear but kinda lofi, raggedy almost stripped down stuff like this. Wish I had an ear to write stuff like that.

@ProgressiveDoom I just put new wiring in my jazz. I haven't had much time with it, but in series it's way beefier. Reminds me of a PJ with both on full, but a little more spank. If you like the feel of a jazz but want more beef my guess would be the original two J pup MIJ jaguar bass. Or a stacked/split inline coil...but I like the eb idea.
