Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

You all are awesome, thanks a ton for the req's.
I'm going to try to track down a porkloin and a B3K and see how my fretless sounds through em. Both of those seem like they might fit better into what we're doing (thrashy prog stuff) and sound like they're a bit more mid-focused? at least to my ears anyways.

We only have one guitar so it feels like there is a bit more sonic space for bass in our mix.
Love my pork loin to death, but I wouldn't call it grindy. It adds a subtler overdrive and fatness to the sound.

Quick question for y'all, I'm looking for some overdrive or distortion that has more clank and growl in it vs the really aggressive fuzz I've been using. The fuzz (GGG muff and 420 fuzz) hasn't been sitting super well in our mix so I've playing clean (with a lot of compression) lately. Curious to see if anyone had other suggestions. I'm going to be wandering around testing what I can in the bay.

Currently looking at darkglass B3K and X, I've had a rec for the Swollen Pickle, and I'm going to try a SA Aftershock as well.
I don’t know the 420, but I do have a GGG Deluge/muff. The GGG is super dark as built. I’ve added a 3 way diode switch to mine; the no diodes setting is brighter. I’ve also been using a Boss LS2 as a clean blend and been digging on a DOD Boneshaker for clank.

Thats not a bad idea. I was going to pull mine apart sometime to add a tone bypass switch and a clean blend sometime... I maybe I'll do that soon and add a diode selector and some other diode options as well.

The 420 is uh, interesting to say the least. by itself its not super good on bass and really hard to tame but it has a lot of really nasty gated fuzz sounds. I added a clean blend to mine set at unity gain and a blend between that and the outputs of the fuzz. I'm very happy with how it turned out and the overall usefulness of the pedal now, but its not the right sound for what we're doing now.

I swear by this thing but have a feeling I’m the only person in the world using it so it might not be as great as think it is.

The intro to this song I used it thru an SVT

Which GGG Muff variant do you have? I looked at doing some “tone” section mods to mine and discovered the “Deluge” as designed already has the tone un-scooped. I put a dpdt on/on/on switch im place of the first set of clipping diodes with none/2N5457’s/1N4148’s options. It’s on the bench right now - I think I’ll look into adding a blend.

I built mine as the GGG-tuned version, with the tone just being a blend pot between a low pass filter and a high pass filter. Its suuuuuper dark sounding, so I might rework the board a little to either alter those filter values (or make adjustable filters!) or add a bypass or something.

Anybody jamming in a five piece? Just wondering how that’s going cuz we just added another guitarist with a gig on Friday. Def thickens up the sound but I wonder about the song writing process . Five dudes agreeing on anything is rare especially in music.

Does that make it a 5 piece with 3 guitars? If so that sounds kinda thick...

I'd echo this if you want to give it a go without lots of cash thrown down. I have one and can also attest to the insane amount of clank you can dial in. I think the Gunslinger and dod250 that @cornfarmer and @gfen said would also do it real well without breaking the bank. It's crazy how full and how much high end those dod circuits bring. Real unique sounding and honestly I think they're better for not having a blend. Love how simplistic they are.

Never seen it but looks rad. I've been meaning to try the giganteum drive, sounds great on guitar and I dig the flavor.

I looked around TB and gen pop says they sound pretty good for what they are. If that cab is in good shape and the drivers aren't shot it's probably a steal. I bet they would take $200. I would snag it but I have enough crap to make 3 stacks already :cigar:
