Somehow missed all these drummer posts. Funny how hard it is to find a good drummer that is willing to play heavy...I found one and am doing my damnedest to keep working with him, being 90min away doesn't help.

Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Somehow missed all these drummer posts. Funny how hard it is to find a good drummer that is willing to play heavy...I found one and am doing my damnedest to keep working with him, being 90min away doesn't help.
Oooof.
On one hand I can see being a little lost when it comes to being BRAND new to playing heavy music.
An example I have is when i started playing with these dudes on their original stuff... so when I first played with em I was a little lost on a lot of the key changes/structure changes but its not hard to listen to the drummer and just hang with root notes to give that basic song structure with bass. I'd figure its somewhat similar with drums for a straightforward beat and to just.... set the rhythm and maybe watch the bass or a guitar for when changes might be coming or whatever.
On the other... Not being able to stumble along with voodoo child is kind of mind boggling. That's a fairly straight ahead song...
Hope your drummer search goes well. Finding musicians that mesh well is like dating but worse.
The struggle is real! My band-in-the-making has jammed with one and had 3-4 flake out before even getting in the room with us. And the guy that did jam wasn't great but now says he wants to play but can't afford his cut of the practice room rent.
True! Drummers are weird folks too. One of the flakes: [this drummer had played funk and gospel and replied to our ad. For doom metal.]
Guitarist: hey we down to jam today?
"Drummer": sure. I need the address of the practice space so I can take the right bus.
G: uh, how exactly are you going to bring a kit on the bus?
D: I have to bring my own kit?
G: uh, yeah.
Then he says he get a ride there with kit in tow. Ok. No prob, then:
D: so is this like a gig or an audition or what?
G: ???? An audition.
Never shows up.

What is it with drummers and buses?
I don't think different backgrounds are necessarily a bad thing for heavier music styles, but understanding common musical themes and sort of what goes into a genre is required. I mean I come from a jazz and blues with a tiny bit of stoner going into a thrash/prog project and its a BLAST! The Gospel bit sounds kind of off for a doom project tho, but I bet there is some interesting common ground between em....
I think the problem is more with musicians in general. Many of them just aren't "together" people. When I worked in Operations for GC, I can't tell you how many musician types heads exploded when I put an I9 or W4 in front of them. They would stare at me blankly when I asked for a Social Security card or Passport.
When looking for musicians, I had a guy tell me he worked most nights and some weekends. I don't know when he expected to practice or play shows.
Then just add on top of that the fact we are playing a slightly niche sub-genre of a style of music that isn't popular anymore. When everything is geared towards stoners, you are going to get some weirdos.

I mean, to this guys credit, at least he had a car, though it was offset by his dead fish handshake. Honestly, I've jammed with hundreds of people in my life and I know I've been the weakest link in some situations. I kid you not, he was on par w/ my 5 year old daughter and her toy kit. He was the most unaware, inept musician with whom I have ever played music.
He was nice enough, but I can't help but to dislike the guy for A) building up our hopes (if you can't play a basic 4/4 rock beat, don't say you love blast beats) and B) wasting our time.

Well i had figured the guy could groove quite well which would translate to doom. That bus has sailed though.What is it with drummers and buses?

The singer we auditioned was super nice dude. Couldn't sing a lick though. Didn't have any other vocal skills either (scream, grunt, whatev) and no energy no lungs at all. Which was surprising since he apparently sang in punk bands previously.
Sounds like the hunt for musicians in this genre is the same everywhere. Luckily I found out a drummer that is into the same music and styles i am. Went through many guitarists now i play guitar and we are teaching my brother to play bass. Finally a band full of musicians who actually enjoy the same style of music and none of us have kids or any major attachments here so we may be able to take off and start touring next year.

LoL, audition stories. I was this drummer once. I blowed pretty hard, because the guy's shoes I was trying to fill was drumming on another level, and I didn't prepare enough. They were nice about it, though I was pretty embarrassed. Eventually they got the guy to rejoin the band because they were going to have a hard time finding somebody as good as him. Ends up that the singer/guitarist lives down the street from me and we're pretty good buds now. His band and mine should be sharing a gig hopefully soon.
That's awesome dude! I know the feeling, and that's why I'm doing my best to keep the band together till our schedules clear up a bit. It's nice to know you have the possibility of something like this lasting a long time. I think that's one big plus for having the "hang" being fun.
My new amp came in yesterday. Sounds killer m. Clean is great for pedals and dirty channel gets really dirty. My band isn’t doing much lately so I think it may be time to start looking for a new one. Hoping to go in a more heavy riff direction instead of alt rock Radiohead stuff. Bass also sounds pretty heavy through the dirty channel.
Holy crap. Played last night with the Thunderclapper through my 2x15. I think I'm done.
Homebrew. Old shallow Peavey cab with 2 Faitals in it.
Did this guy move there from Atlanta? Your story sounds awfully similar to an experience I had last year.
Not sure if this has been covered before, but any doom/sludge/stoner/whatever bassists out there using a hollow body besides Dave Sherman?
