It's not cheap, but definitely try to check out the Darkglass X7 (or the X). I'm not a huge fan of the token, baked-in DG sound that seems inescapable with a lot of newer metal/prog-metal type bands. That said, the X7 is way more versatile than the other stuff I've tried from them (Alpha Omega and BK). You can dial in as much or little compression as you want on the low band, and then get anything from clean clank to mild fuzz, depending on how much gain you dial in to the top end, and how much of the upper frequencies you push through that circuit. It punches up my jazz, gives it some clank & a bit of grit, but doesn't mask the sound of my bass or make it generic sounding. I dig it a lot.
