Clean it sounded great - traded it for a old peavy half stack, yes I'm a dummy

Not quite the same, but I’d challenge that Paul Barker’s bass playing meets a similar, but different, amount of sonic abuse.
Quick question for y'all, I'm looking for some overdrive or distortion that has more clank and growl in it vs the really aggressive fuzz I've been using. The fuzz (GGG muff and 420 fuzz) hasn't been sitting super well in our mix so I've playing clean (with a lot of compression) lately. Curious to see if anyone had other suggestions. I'm going to be wandering around testing what I can in the bay.
Currently looking at darkglass B3K and X, I've had a rec for the Swollen Pickle, and I'm going to try a SA Aftershock as well.

It's not cheap, but definitely try to check out the Darkglass X7 (or the X). I'm not a huge fan of the token, baked-in DG sound that seems inescapable with a lot of newer metal/prog-metal type bands. That said, the X7 is way more versatile than the other stuff I've tried from them (Alpha Omega and BK). You can dial in as much or little compression as you want on the low band, and then get anything from clean clank to mild fuzz, depending on how much gain you dial in to the top end, and how much of the upper frequencies you push through that circuit. It punches up my jazz, gives it some clank & a bit of grit, but doesn't mask the sound of my bass or make it generic sounding. I dig it a lot.
I just have such poor technique that the sound of the strings smashing against the frets is unavoidable anyways. I imagine if I played closer to the bridge I could resolve that a bit, but... it's just so convienent to my thumb so hard into the top of the middle pickup that there's no way I can move it.
Also, to be fair, I haven't played a single pickup bass in forever that I'm not sure you can get that "growl" without one.

I'm pretty interested in the X so far. I prefer to run my amp clean so I can back off on quieter parts and let the goofy muwaaaaaahhhhhhh through on breakdowns and stuff.
Low low low! I can get a lot of controllable clank depending on where and how I pluck the strings. Granted its on a fretless so its a different timbre of clank and tends to be more slap/thunk-ish. It sits in well with fuzz, kinda looking forward to seeing how it does with different flavors of OD and distortion.

I'd suggest the darkglass vintage micro tubes deluxe over the b3k or b7k.
Those seem more scooped. The vmtd has clank and articulation but you can make it growly. Get the version with the ERA knob. It gets soooooo much use on my board. Blends well in the mix but is still audible. Stacks well, and the blend feature keeps as much of your original tone as you want.

@rutrho, i'm really happy with the Darkglass Vintage Deluxe. I have not use any other Darkglass pedals, but I from the samples it seems the Vintage Deluxe has a less modern/scooped sound. Other options, the good ol'Sansamp BDDI or PDDI or MXR M80. I'm super happy with my Darkglass, but I got it on a trade. For the price, I'd be more than happy with a BDDI.
I have not tried the darkglass X yet, but ive played the vmt, vmt deluxe, b3k and b7k. I preferred the vmt deluxe out of all of them for overdriven clank. But i still preferred my volt thrower for clank over all the darkglass stuff for this. I found it responded best to my heavy handed playing. Though it could be that im just a fan of how rats break up.
The Green Rhino and Hellmouth pedals are TS clones that can add some nice articulation to your attack. The Dunwich Bass Overdriver can also add some nice articulation (if you can find one.)
There is also the Darkglass Alpha Omega. I had a B3K. It does add attack, but I didn't like the drive.
EHX makes a combo pedal called Hot Wax that might work for you.
I wanted to take a moment to veer us away from all this bass talk, and praise stoner\doom drummers a little. I've been tooling around with DYI recording, which means digging through tons of drum MIDI packs. To try to narrow down what I want, I've been paying closer attention to the drummers in some of my favorite stoner\doom bands. I never notice how complicated and musical so many of these drummers play. The little tom\crash accents and switching power hands during a measure is very impressive. None of the MIDI packs I've come across so far can even come close to what the drummers of Sleep, OM, Khemmis, Spaceslug, and Fall of an Empire are doing. It isn't Tool\Karnivool\Gojira level out there, but still very impressive.
This adventure has also led me to the conclusion that the producers and drummers making "Doom" packs have ever heard a single Doom or Stoner album.

New live album recorded just a few days ago at our show in Montreal. Captured with a Zoom Q2N. Added a bit of compression and EQ via Reaper.

I'm going to try to track down a porkloin and a B3K and see how my fretless sounds through em. Both of those seem like they might fit better into what we're doing (thrashy prog stuff) and sound like they're a bit more mid-focused? at least to my ears anyways.
We only have one guitar so it feels like there is a bit more sonic space for bass in our mix.
