Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

HPF is not the same as rolling off the lows. most of the time with an hpf you are filtering out low frequencies that are basically inaudible but still robbing you of headroom and stressing your speakers. of course you can use it to roll off at higher frequencies to get a tighter sound. a lot of amps already have good filtering built in but you won't really know if an hpf is useful for you until you try one.

i have the fdeck and broughton. both work great, the broughton is a little more pedal board friendly.

Which Broughton? One of the things I like about my FDeck is that at its lowest frequency it was almost exactly where my cab cuts off. One of the Broughtons is labeled and the other isn’t, but they both go lower than my cab reproduces well, which seems unnecessary to me. But then again, the FDeck is slightly more expensive.

Wish I knew how to make my own pedals, since the FDeck has schematics for free. Then I could fix the niggling little issues I have with it as well.

Edit: Double-checked my info. Here are the frequencies for my pertinent gear.
Low B String - 31hz
F-Deck Cut off - 35hz
GK Neo 410 - 30hz

Ideally, I like that the FDeck cuts off just before my cab’s design limit. I know it can technically likely go lower, but not at volume. The always-on Broughton cuts off at 25hz, and I’d like that option since it’s board friendly and I don’t need a footswitch - my HPF is always on. The Broughton isn’t labeled, though. The normal Broughton one has frequencies labeled on the knob. Plus, the FDeck has a double filter at its lowest point (when the adjustable filter is set there) since it always has a -12db filter happening there. Pretty much makes sure no damage will come to my cab.

Sounds like I should just get another FDeck!

You could always find someone who can mod it for you too.

i have the hpf/lpf broughton. cab and amp specs are pretty useless indicators due to no real standardazed methodologies. 30hz but at how many db? if 30 hz is 3db lower than 1000hz you're probably not hearing much of that fundemental. i start high passing at 70hz. it allows me to get louder without the mushy distortion and retain the headroon for good punch with my SVT or GT200 and 810 .

I’m aware that the fundamental is often not the most of a note that is heard. The cab says -3 at 30hz.

Whatever floats your boats guys :cigar: I don't see a need, so I guess they're not for me.

I've played a lot, through a lot of different amps/speakers, and there's been maybe 1-2 times in my life where I noticed some concerning movement of the cones, and yet they never blew up and worked fine for as long as I owned them.

Now, if someone wants to loan me one of these HPFs, I'll try it out free of charge :eyebrow:

Thoughts on HPFs? Bought an FDeck 3 a few years ago, and have no complaints whatsoever, but I know HPFs are all the rage right now. Anything better than the FDeck these days? I want it mostly for speaker protection and headroom, and the quick look I took at Broughton’s seemed like the frequency cutoff was too low.

So, what do you guys think of HPFs? Anything else I should know/consider?

I like the Fdeck but I am going to end up swapping it ought for a Broughton for the added LPF and for the better pedalboard format as previously mentioned.

-3db is quite a bit. 30Hz is already difficult to hear even if it was at 0db, at -3db and at louder volumes you probably won't notice a difference in low end if you filter it out because you probably are not hearing or feeling it today anyway. I have a pair of planarmagnetic headphones that have a flat response down to 10hz and even then anything below 50hz was not that audible when i tested them with a sine wave tone generator.

what you may notice is your amp may sound louder or more clear in a mix. or you may not hear a difference at all meaning, your amp probably has an HPF built in anyway.

I’m unsure as to the purpose of our post, but that’s exactly why I’m using my current HPF. I don’t notice an audible difference, but I noticed a huge change in cone excursion when I used the HPF. As stated earlier, I’m not looking for a tone shaper - I want speaker protection. So 30hz sounds good (in that I WON’T hear a difference!).

Kinda in the same boat. Would be nice to have one for when you do need it (if you don't prefer it on all the time). Would be real helpful in practice and show spaces where lows get mushy quick.

All this talk about high pass and low pass filters made me decide to pull the trigger on one of the kma tylers. Not exactly the same thing you guys were talking about but im excited to try it.
I’ve seen those online. Definitely look useful as all get it but I don’t see the benefit when I have an ls-2 that splits my signal already. Definitely let us know how it does!
