Relatable... I play fretless clean most of time these days... I'm still doing thrashy and some tech death stuff, but it works somehow.
Hey, we are home to the heavy, the weird, and the not top40coverband. Though as long as you leave yer fedora at the door, them folks can drift in here if they dare. Lol
Well, I'm going to my new band's audition this evening. It's kind of like if porcupine tree had a sick child with Tool. I think the last bassist was also the vocalist, and he really had an American Football vibe, so coming in I suppose there's an opening for a vocalist, although my vocals more fit a Tom Waits vibe or idk maybe something like Matt Pike. We'll see...

Same, turned down tickets no less! I said I'd catch em next time round since they were here the year before iirc. That one will bother me for a long time, their early music was influential to me (and his singing) when I was just discovering heavier music. I never had a chance to see them either.

It is! I’ve even had arguments about commercial metal music and how much I despise their marketing tactics. I don’t give a hell who you are. I’m not paying $50 for a T-shirt! All on this wonderful thread of ole buddies talking about that low low in relation to that slow and low sludge we all love to feast upon...
Being from Tampa, I do like the fast stuff too. But, doom is tops!

I’m cool with pretty much any style of metal. Really any type of music in general, aside from black metal or music of the same ilk.
I can’t say there is anything that I honestly hate as far as music goes. Many that I like far less than others. My mainstays are doom, stoner, jam band and psychedelic stuff.
That being said I do find a lot of inspiration for music I write in really weird places. Sometimes it seems as though inspiration is never in the same vein as where you write or approach a track. I patterned a riff a few weeks ago that was a play on an 80s pop song but tempo was slowed, key changed, and the riff was put together differently.
Do you all have the same situations or do you mainly find inspiration from the same areas you listen to as what you play?

I get inspiration from all over.
And I love all sorts of metal, and have asked/mentioned plenty of it in this thread to no ill will.
I’d say this is the best thread on TB overall. Plenty of knowledge, no BS, and down-to-earth. “No judgment zone”, basically. I’ve asked for help on a range of topics, and get plenty of solid advice and info. We all pretty much get the “do your own thing” vibe and realize personal preferences and whatnot are just those - personal preferences and not “the truth”.

I think about the most dystopian hellscape imaginable, then try to write the soundtrack to it.
I find a lot of inspiration from my love of prog and psych in my doom band. I also realized our love for Iron Maiden came out in our tunes too, mostly lyrically.

I listen to a very wide variety of music. I'm currently messing around with trying to twist traditional folk style music from different cultures into something. I was inspired by Om, particularly At Giza.
I had some sort of Chinese and Indian traditional sounding riff going the other day but I was drinking at the time and forgot what I was playing when I woke up the next day.
I really should have written it down or something.I find inspiration in any kind of music I like!
I play some kind of math-rock* but I listen and enjoy many other genres from tech-death to no wave
*or shall I say, that was the intention but it took a form of its own due to the fact that our technique is pretty crappy and my drummer doesn't listen to math stuff at all and is more of a grindcore guy
