The Fairfield is on the list of ones to try, same with the photon deathray. I think I'd be all for a gritty comp with little squeeze.
For right now, just trying to salvage home life. Hoping to get some time here and there to build a replacement board and a guitar rack (my daughter broke a bass yesterday knocking it off it's stand

). Oh and trying to finish building a guitar prototype among all the other things...
I got a few side jobs I could do right now. And the usual projects round the house that take priority.
The quick: Simple, yes. Easy, not really. Lots of elbow grease without tools.
Long:
Depends on whether you have a good sander and right paint stripper. Sounds like you arent trying to do translucent finishes so stripping the tough spots doesn't have to be perfect. Painting isnt hard, just takes time. Straight shades are much easier though! To make it even easier you can use wipe on poly as a clear coat which is about as easy as it gets.
