Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

some heavy shhhhhiiiiiaaaaaatttttt

hooo wheee, that's somethin' alright.

....so I've been selling off some inventory, and have started a policy of '1 in / 1 out'. Something new is on the way, and I'm thinking of letting one of these 2 P-basses go and I can't decide. It's apples and oranges.

The red one is a Fender mongoloid that has a Squier Affinity Gyynna body with a MIM neck, and was dirt cheap to build. The neck is nicer, slightly slimmer, and I have no idea what pickups they stuck in these Gyynna bodies, but it sounds like a really good P-bass. Resell value = nil. I can replace it easily if I wanted another down the road. I like how it plays/feels somewhat better than the one on the right.

The natural bass is one of the really good Ibanez copies with a roasted ash body. The neck is a bit more chunky, and the frets are a lot more worn, it could benefit from a little shimming but it's ok as is. I stuck in a G&L MFD and that made the bass really come alive. Resell value = maybe better, I have the original pickups/ashtray covers and a vintage case for it. I have not seen one like mine come up for sale since I bought it, so there might be some regretful-tude if I sold it.

I've had P-basses come and go and I'll probably end up with just one at some point as an old man. They're basically all I played when I started out. This drivel sounds like a general pop TB first world problem post, but what would you do? Anyone want to trade for a pair of crocs, Hawaiian shirt and a fedora!?

In Jorin news: picked up a new power supply and my pedalboard is now in the process of being re-organised. It's turning out a lot simpler yet more potent as I'm skipping putting the Rubberneck and Superego send/returns in their own ES-8 loops. It was fun, but a bit gimmicky and not too applicable.

I also took off the MF-101 as I didn't find use for it in my sound. I think it gets harder to use with a rick-o-sound setup as you'll get one channel passing through its highs anyway, and the effect diminishes. But it's also just not my kind of sound, I want to sound absolutely massive.

The EHX Cathedral, positioned at the end, is also going away. I just couldn't get good use out of it. It might be replaced with an Ocean's 12 later on, but I feel like reverbs are best handled in post and routing gets tricky if you wanna do stereo, which is half the point. If the Ocean's 12 can take both my channels but still just stack two effects on one of them and let the other run dry, it would be a wicked addition to my setup.

Finally, I moved my phaser into the ES-8. So all in all I have two ES-8 loops left. My drive section is growing tirelessly, so I'm thinking I might actually segregate it even more, but it would also be a good spot for an Ocean's 12, even if it would have to use two channels. We'll see how the situation evolves :^)

Finally, I discovered that I was using a DC switch for an AC power connection and I really prefer not screwing around with 220VAC more than necessary, so I'm awaiting a new switch from Thomann. I took the opportunity to order Behringer's Hyperfuzz and HM-2 clones as well, seeing how I won't be getting proper versions of either for a while.

I promise I'll post pics once I have the proper switch installed and everything is up and running again! I think a lot of you will like it. I am not going to sink to the level of just posting pictures of pedals that haven't even been plugged in and I haven't heard yet, no matter how tempting it is to get that buyer validation :p

With all the hullabaloo about coronavirus does anyone else feel really (even more so than normally) inspired to listen to and write Doom Metal?

I've always had a healthy bit of environmental dread, so I can't say it's more than usual. I'm young, even if I were to get infected I'd live. I don't know if I'll live in 50 years though. Sweden is stable enough and able to handle covid-19, but my location is irrelevant to climate change and hateful ideologies are rising all throughout Europe lately and I am definitely in more than one demographic that has been targeted by such groups before.

To me, the stoner/doom I write has always been more personal like gender dysphoria, mental health, and living with substance abusers. But also a bit of fantasy for the thematic aspect and because it's hard to write instrumental pieces about... anything specific whatsoever, so I write instrumental pieces about ancient spaceships and Snorlax, the Pokemon :p

For the more striking and impersonal dread of environmental destruction and the political developments of the 2010's, I feel like more direct grindcore/death metal works better for me, though I'd be lying if I said I had experience playing it. But I have ideas for how I will do so, at least.

Well I have off paid until Monday the 23rd... Things seem nuts though.

I may have posted this before but is anyone on here (or other members of your band) using effects to make noise / tie things together between songs or during tuning? I want something to make some noise / ambient sounds to avoid the awkward silence. Any ideas?

Conan has a great solution to this -- just let the bass and guitar feedback wildly while drinking water and tuning up between songs. Hopefully you don't tune at the same time as the rest of the band, or you can get a tuner that's always on and push to mute. Or just run a separate signal into it. The former implies buffered bypass, but I'm sure you've seen the classic:
buffered pedals.png

Another option, of course, is to stack a bunch of drives that make noise even with no input signal. You could also run something with high enough resonance to start self-oscillating. A phaser, and it will go .... sweeEEEEEEEeeee .... swwwwoooooOOOOOOOooooo.....

But ya know, there are easier solutions that aren't overly expensive and impractical jokes some weirdo is trying to make on talkbass dot com. EHX Freeze/Superego and synthesisers are for sure the easiest solutions, other than massive feedback if you happen to have a massive amp.

Damn this smacks!! Too bad I can't experience the full song, my right speaker is broken :(

For real though that is some great guitar but I genuinely burst into laughter when the bagpipes came in. I was not expecting that.

Your pedalboard experience sounds as hectic and overanalyzed as mine. Maybe that's why I prefer simple pedals. I get a sound I like and then I don't over tweak it? Hmmm...

Can't wait to see the results.

I listened around a bit on YouTube. Seems to me it tends to preserve some good, ballsy low end. I like that a lot.

Edit: Seems no one here in Europe is selling it. :(

Let me know if Harman ends up being too expensive to send it your way. I have a reissue that's still sealed in the box if you're interested. Oddly enough most of the pedals I've flipped lately have gone to Europe.

That's tough, I get it though. What's the point of having so much stuff if some of it rarely, if ever, gets used.

My Jazz is in the same boat as the red P. Probably worth next to nothing on the market, but man is it a player! I will never get rid of it. Just feels and sounds too good.

My vote would probably be for that. Pop the original pups back in the Ibanez and toss her back on the market. Maybe the MFDs will kill in the red one too? If the sound is great and the neck is preferred, that's the one I'd keep. You may miss the Ibanez and it certainly looks great, but I think you wouldn't miss it when you pick up and play the red one.

If you like the natural look, strip the red one and throw some shellac on it.

Just my thoughts. I've been on the fence about getting a flea jazz, black top jazz, and a MIJ jj jaguar myself. Now even the new 32" scale Squier jaguar. But really they'll all be in the same boathouse, except maybe the blacktop, so I likely won't get any of em.

^ Ended up selling the red one and a beat-up made in Gyynna acoustic bass to a guy yesterday, made him a extra fine package deal. Now he and his kids are gonna go slappa their new basses together happily ever after.

So I'm keeping the Ibanez copy....After doing some thinking/looking around, it might be kinda rare. It might be one of the last copies before they started selling their own designs. I can only find it listed for one year in their catalogs (btw, a good resource is below). I haven't come across another since buying this one, usually the ones that come up for sale are labeled as 'Silver Series', or have slightly different, slightly weird headstock or body proportions. This one is clearly a more accurate copy than the others I've encountered. I got a screaming deal on it so I'd be dumb to let it go anyway. I shimmed the neck properly last night and that fixed having to have the bridge saddles slammed down really low. It also became more apparent that the bridge was installed slightly too forward towards the neck, as you can see here. Look at how far back the saddles are on the Ibanez after I set up the intonation, compared to the Fender on the left. Not a deal breaker but there's almost no more adjustment unless I cut the springs for the adjustment screws down, or move the whole bridge back. The only strings I had lying around were some La Bella DT54's so those will need to go so I can re-assess the sitch as I'm not really playing thick/downtune gauges right now.

After fumbling around with loose pedals for months, I gifted myself an official pedal board. Adjustable legs, heaps of velcro, the works. Now I'm a big boy.

The signal chain:
- Bass
- Tuner (Valeton Coral, from France)
- Compressor (Seymour Duncan Studio Bass)
- Octaver (Behringer UO100)
- Octaver (TC SubnUp)
- Fuzz (EHX Big Muff)
- HPF (Broughton)
- Amp

Yes, two octavers! My band has one guitarist, so I use the "Up" of the SubnUp to fill in the emptiness when he starts soloing. I don't like the SubnUp's "Sub" octave because it lags.
The Behringer, on the other hand, has a cool down octave, rather synthy in my mind. I dig it for the mysterious opening notes of "Don't stand so close to me".

Hey Doomers

Any of y'all have any experience with any of the Fuzzlord pedals? What are your thoughts on them? I know there's not many bass demos out there until pretty recently. The builder is from my town, so I thought about checking one out and supporting hometown builders.

I've been curious about them too, but a little too pricey to pull the trigger without hearing some sort of demos/feedback. Obviously, now is not the best time, but...why not hit up the builder and ask about trying one if they're local?

I had tried to get a FU-2, but they sell out super fast. [I ended up with the Blackhawk Amps octave fuzz partly due to this and partly because Blackhawk's pedal has a clean blend]

I did get a tshirt and stickers from him and he sent them out really quick. Seems very engaged on the social medias too.

Yes he is. I inquired about the latest release, the Doom Screamer, that is loosely TS based iirc. There a bass demo on instagram that sounded cool. It sold out quickly.

I like the idea of hitting him up and personally going over to demo some.

And I'm sure he wouldn't be disappointed to hear you're an active member of an online bass community where other folks have asked about his stuff. Might be encouraging and motivate him to let you try some stuff so there's so word-of-mouth exposure happening. Not that he needs it to sell pedals, but it never hurts...

Made a bunch of new cables for my pedal board and my OCD is temporarily satisfied...

also got my bands poopy PA head mixer thing torn apart and cleaning everything on it. I guess it was stored outside so, uh, it was nasty in a I hope I don't have new diseases sort of way...

upside is it sounds way better now, and its not nearly as noisy.

I picked up a used FET120 (or was it a Skymaster? I forget) a while back and wasn’t into it on bass, though I could see it being solid for guitar. I used to be more excited to check their stuff out, but the owner was a bit rude and dismissive when I pinged him on FB to ask a couple questions. Not a “F#%k that guy, boycott!” level of rude or anything extreme like that, he was just pretty clearly not very interested in my money so I decided that’s cool, I’ll be just fine not giving it to him until/unless I’m good and ready.
