Just saw this. Something me and my bud have been talking about doing. Have to give it a shot.
Yeah Rust-Oleum and whatnot should work just fine. I would do several coats, do it light and easy, "dry" is what they call it. Keep a good 8" away, that'll help prevent sags.
Don't worry if you can kinda see through after the first coat or two. Let it dry out for the recommendation, like 20-30min I think. If you sag or "run" just let it dry up.
After a few coats you can let it cure overnight and sand down any defect (use 400-800+ grit) and take your time not to bullseye it. Coat it a few more times with the white and let it cure.
Next day you can rub on the poly in the same manner in 4-5 coats. I think you need to let each coat cure though. Then lay down more coats if you want.
The body should already be sealed so you shouldn't see soak in. The poly will be thin each coating so if you want it to last from wear, do a bunch of layers. If needed lightly sand between each but really just sand and buff till satisfied after the last coat.
Sorry to dive so deep. Oh and just so you get a feel for it and make sure the poly is compatible with the basecoat, run a test on scrap wood, etc. If you'd like I can probably go into more detail spraying and whatnot, there's a few easy tricks.

I was on it briefly but then swore it off after coming to the conclusion that it wasn't a benefit to my life.

Thanks! Glad you liked it. I've lurked in this thread for years but I don't post all that much. I'll tell you though I've noticed a lot of you guys are around my age (38) and its shaging hard as you get older to keep a band going when people start having health issues, careers, and kids. It's hard to make practice, its hard to practice on your own, its hard to even schedule shows sometimes. We wrote those songs in 2014 and 2015 and recorded them in 2017 but we didn't like the recordings and weren't able to re-record them until mid 2019 before my big surgery and then took awhile to mix/master because we did that ourselves. I will say though that we made a bunch of small tweaks over the years to the songs that I think really helped bring them to life and if we recorded them earlier they wouldn't be as good. I'm really proud that we were able to stay together through everything and finally put these out.
We do actually have a couple WIP songs that just aren't ready and I hope we can practice enough to play them out and record them in the next year or 2. Right now we aren't practicing because the other two guys have kids and everyone is worried about coronavirus. My drummer is working from home and my guitarist's work is closed until this is over but I work in healthcare so we never close. I hope everyone and there loved ones stays safe and healthy.
Wait? What is the alternative that is better than getting old? Death? I mean, to a certain point, I guess? But I suspect we'll all get to a point where we'd rather it just be over with.
