The guy was playing a Flying V drop D Into a 3120 valve king half stack. He likes a really thin harsh tone, and I couldn't undial the like tubby vintage tone.

Full scale does a better growl I find, but I just dig SS usually.

Assuming you did your due diligence with knob twisting on the V3, I'd say it was probably the strings as well.
Which cab were you using? Did you try different cabs?

I only have a dually, and I was doing just about everything with the EQ/channels. Generally though, maxed out everything, bass not maxed but sometimes is, as it sounds good with dirt. I have it set to active aka Hard EQ, I believe as the soft EQ is quieter and I believe from a thread a fender tone stack sort of when in that position. Dirt channel has a mid switch that I like, it marshallizes the channel and can be blended with the clean channel, but you can't mid boost the clean itself.

The previous owner thinks it has original tubes, and it's from like '83 or something so should that help too?

It's a squier Chris Aiken body. So white with a mirror guard and Seymour Duncan 1/4 pounder squier variant and volume knob straight to jack, and the bridge is "hi-mass" vs traditional bent steel bridge to whatever effect that gives.

I could wire it other ways, or new pickguard, as was the plan, but it'd be cheaper to sell the body or trade it towards a jazz bass body that's already wired. I like the neck it came with too much to part with it.

To me it just sounds like a bad combination of short scale, old strings and old tubes. I also agree with mr CL400 - back off the bass knob and push the mids.

Also try getting a little further away from your amp, it can sound very different when you're not standing right next to it.

I've had to adjust my EQ habits - I would think that there was a definite lack of low end and crank up the bass knob when really if I had been 20 feet away my eyeballs would have been vibrating.

Had this happen at a couple of shows where I thought I sounded thin and quiet then after the set people would come up to and say that they were standing in back and getting nauseous from the low end.

Been getting better at dialing in the new rig. VT-RM settings are modified suggested SVT. Turned down the Bass down to 1 oclock. Up on the mids to 10 oclock. Treble is around 11.
What also helped a great deal is setting uiity gain on the dirt pedals with clean. So to sum it up I tured down the gain on all the dirt pedals a little. It's helping alot.

I have to be carful not to go full bore as the amp will clip and I'm going to blow these speakers. I can turn the VT master up to 75% depending on the Bass used.
Seriously considering a Fender Neo 6x10 as opposed to a dually to run this rig in bridged mode.

If I engage the BDPG at high volumn I have to cut bass some more. I like that pedal alone as well I may engage it on the slow doomy parts.

The other deal is string attack. I need to have a light touch with the pick otherwise it's mush city at these levels. Better for me anyway just need to practice doing that and not hammering the strings.

Have your neighbor behind you come over and set up your bass EQ, it's his birthright and he owes you from talking him down when he was storm tripping.
