Stoner/Doom Bassists Thread, Part 90: Maxed Out

Spent a large chunk of time today brushing up on my bass and guitar chops, and comparing various dirt boxes. It's been a LOOONG road, but man - now that I have ones I like, I love fuzz. It was a good day. I'm so pumped to have time to play again! And it seems my chops aren't as in bad a shape as I had expected - I could still play some faster stuff no problem. Just gotta work up some endurance again. But that will come.

Fixed that for ya.

LMAO-That statement only applies to white vans with no windows driven by single guys with creepy mustaches who still wear Members Only Jackets…

So..Meets none of those qualifications for “Nothing to see here” (plus if you slap some Metal artwork on there it would seem less suspicious at it would draw attention to it instead of trying to blend in (just sayin’)…

Just maybe don’t help a guy who’s trying to load a couch with a fake broken arm…

Thanks! \m/

How did Thievery Corporation end up on that bill? Seems like an odd act compared to all the other bands.

They are probably trying to implement the same cash grab strategy that most festivals do now where they dump a few artists into the lineup that aren’t in the same genre to try to boost ticket sales…

Wife and I went to Rock In Rio in Las Vegas a few years back and even though Metallica was the headliner they had an EDM at the festival…I mean…Nothing “against” EDM, but it seemed very…Incongruous to the rest of the lineup (Although I suppose it’s totally possible it’s bc it’s Las Vegas and there’s always some club somewhere playing EDM/dub step music (probably even try now as I’m typing this)…

In defense of the organizers-Maybe they just had an open slot and couldn’t find another band from the same genre to fit, but my instinct says the organizers were trying to create a financial hedge of some kind…

Anyone here use the thumb/index/middle finger "banjo roll" style for plucking? I was messing around with it last night, and it had some interesting results. Oh, yeah, since I'm always late to the party, Bassboysam, I finally started to listen to "Big Sky, Black Horse" (yeah, yeah, I know, years down the road). That's some mighty fine stuff.
I use all the time sitting down at home, often w/ ring finger too. I almost never use it live. I prefer a longer strap length when I stand and play and find that it fatigues my thumb.

@lucas303, I dig the Dom DiPiazza video! That seems to be a technique of lot of fusion dudes use this- Damian Erskine, Matt Garrison, Thundercat. Bosco Mann (Dap Kings) and Even Marien do a weird thing where they play trad finger style by use their thumb to hit the low string.

Check out the technique in a non-fusion style here:

Huh. I can, well could - I’m a bit rusty, play finger style blues on guitar, but I’ve never really applied it to bass, save for a few pedal point things. I’ve also always thought Larry Graham’s thumb n pluck technique looks very similar to footage of pre-electric blues guitarists where they’re really beating up the guitar for both volume and rhythmic effect. Remco’s style is kinda in that vein, too.

Anyone in need of a new ride or band van? I figure the crowd here might be interested. Instead of playing music lately I've been fixing it up, and now it's time to sell it!

Oof. Sick with a P-H. I’ve been having impure cargo van thoughts for the last month after renting one to move some stuff that wouldn’t fit in my Sienna. I really don’t want the mpg penalty, though. I really, really don’t wanna ride my KLR to wherever that thing is, put it in the back, and head back to the north shore on an epic motorcycle/van camping trip.

Important bass item of the day: while watching an OK horror flick, I figured out the opening riff to "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida".

You my friend definitely did NOT waste today if you spent it watching a horror movie and learned the riff to that song (Hey it is Friday The 13th after all)…

Although my mind always defaults to this whenever I hear that song:
