Metal and LEGOs is an awesome way to spend an afternoon. I get all of that other stuff. Copy and paste tons of it for me too. Also Christian upbringing, couldn't listen to much of anything, etc., etc., etc. And as for English class, I was an English major! Maiden (and plenty of other metal) is actually pretty topical and tackles all sorts of educational topics from history, English, mathematics, biology, "theology" of sorts... you get the picture. It's a fairly educated genre compared to many others. I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here.

I was definitely stronger on verbal subjects in school so I was more into History in terms of favorite school subjects (idk why but something about dates and significant events just made it stick in my brain)…Sadly that is probably why I’m so miserable in Corporate Finance-I feel like my coworkers lack any sort of appreciation for non-math related subjects…Also no one seems to have a sense of humor (ESPECIALLY when it comes to pop culture)…
You touched on something that I wish more people were aware of-Metal is often thought provoking and tackles some pretty difficult subjects at times…
Oh sure, there’s mindless “Devil music” if you look for it, but one of the reasons Master Of Puppets is one of my favorite albums of all time-I used to listen to that in high school especially on days I had to drive to take a class at community college (I was taking 3 hrs of college level Statistics at the time bc I was trying to get some credits under my belt)…
I just remember MANY afternoons listening to that album on my car stereo (which was probably worth more than my entire car since I drove a complete piece)…
Something about listening to Disposable Hero’s really stuck with me and I feel like that song is a microcosm of that album (and how I often feel about life in general)-I feel like the general theme of the album is being influenced/controlled by outside forces or circumstances beyond your control…
Also covered-Alienation, feelings of depression, sadness, rage, skepticism, etc …I know a lot of people tend to dismiss a lot of Metal as “noise”, but lyrically there’s a lot more to it than that….Metal has pulled me out of some REALLY dark times psychologically (there was a time period after my Mom passed away where I think I listened to Fade To Black every single day just bc it was about the only thing in the whole entire world that made me feel better and less alone…
As for Maiden-I wasn’t big on them until a few years back when I found that listening to them while I work is helpful -Granted I usually hit their earlier stuff, but something about the structure and the pace helps the day go by…
